What E'er Thou Art Act Well Thy Part - A Key Component of Staffing Success.

In 1898 - a young man on a service orientated commitment for his faith took a journey with a friend to Stirling Castle in Scotland.  Upon coming to the castle the young man - David O. McKay found an inscription set firmly in stone above one of the entry ways to the castle.  The inscription read: "What E'er Thou Art Act Well Thy Part" - this quote attributed later to…

In this special episode of The Jim Stroud Show, Jim interviews Jeremy Langhans to discuss innovation in recruiting. Specifically, Jeremy details how he leveraged Instagram to recruit passive candidates during his tenure at Starbucks. Furthermore, he discusses the choices one makes when managing a career site. The difference between Talent Networks and Talent Communities

If you have been around the HR & Recruiting blogosphere long enough (or been to enough conference booths) you’ve probably heard about Talent Networks or Talent Communities.  Both were born out of the concept that every recruitment or sourcing campaign you run should not only be about finding applicants for a specific job but also be about building a collection of talent that you can engage with and leverage when recruiting for future positions.  And while both aim to achieve this same…

Why Can’t Some People Feel Comfortable Asking For Referrals?

What is the true value of a referral?  It is hard to define and quantify because the referral is more than a transaction, it is an act of faith and an act of loyalty.  People refer others because they have knowledge (or at least a hope) that the referred will not be disappointed.  No one wants to make a personal recommendation and have it backfire because it reflects badly on them (unless they are filled with alternate and sinister motives).  Referrals are the strongest form of…

A gradual shift toward more "Applicant Targeted" content here?

For the past few months I've noticed more and more self-promo stuff geared toward candidate enlightenment, job hunting tips, etc.

Do the posters have any idea what so ever this is a place for recruiters?  Or do they come here, think "Hey - this is a great place to spam with my candidate BS" and post away?

Yes - I'm an old dog.  Perhaps one of the new tricks I should learn is "How to get business by joining the job hunting and resume writing tips club and…

The App That Tells You Which iPhone Carrier Is Best For You

You choose your mobile carrier for a variety of reasons. Maybe the choice was based on the latest phone, the discount you received, or a friend’s referral. Regardless of the reason, when it comes to…

Ever wondered what the clever phrases in those job ads actually mean?

Conduct an online job search these days and you’re soon confronted with lots of ads, many suggesting, without actually saying it of course, that each day spent working with them will be just like dying and going to heaven, only better. But should they be taken at face value?  Is your workplace heaven? Or is it more like hell, despite what that ever so enticing advertisement that lured you there in the first place suggested? Here I take a lighthearted look at what job ads say and what they…

Little words that can change the way we communicate!!!

Little words that can change the way we communicate!!!

There have been numerous books written on the subject of communication. One of the best is "Conscious Business" by Fred Kofman. I am reading this book now, but have read numerous others on the subject. The one thing that sticks in my mind…

Do You Know the Signs of Age Discrimination at Work?

While there are laws in place to protect individuals’ 40-and-over in the workplace, it doesn’t always mean they are upheld.

According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), there was a steep increase just as recently as 2009 in the number of age-related discrimination claims. In that year, the EEOC noted 22,778 age discrimination claims, close to a 38 percent uptick from only 16,548 three years earlier.

For those that do not know, the Age Discrimination in…

Benefits of Using a Recruiter - The Sequel

The author of this blog has chosen to delete comments.

I doubt there is a better way of illustrating that the argument presented in your blog post has absolutely no intellectual rigour, than deleting comments.

And for the record, the two comments that were deleted (so far) were:

1) Suggesting that it…

Formatting Resumes

Formatting resumes. We all have our own ways to send resumes to clients. Some Recruiters just slap a logo and their own contact information on it, while others take the time to make sure the spelling and grammar are correct before sending the resume to the client with logo and their personal contact information. I see resumes from Recruiters that have different fonts, colors and misspelled words throughout the resume. To get attention from your clients with a candidate’s resume, you should…

Recruit Virtually. Save the Earth.

Go Green!

Did you know that virtual MBA recruitment technology can help save the planet?

In 2008, MBA Focus and its partner schools decided to no longer offer printed resume books to recruiters in an effort to conserve paper and save trees. Based on the number of resume books ordered each year, we estimated that we would save at least 75 trees per year.

Today, in partnership with InterviewStream, we aim to reduce carbon emissions one virtual interview at a time! And…

Are the unemployed getting a fair shake?

I read a few interesting articles recently and I thought it would be a great blog topic because of how mixed my feelings were toward the subject.  The topic, discrimination against the unemployed, seems to be getting more airtime and more heated in recent months and it’s worth discussing.

Here’s the first article link:  (…

Setting the Record Straight.

June 30th 2006 was the date.  The place was the New York Stock Exchange.  History was made when the first organization that represented the families and allies of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people (LGBT) was invited to ring the Closing Bell (SM) at the NYSE. PFLAG's trip to wall street was to "ring the closing bell on homophobia".  It was also an opportunity for the organization to openly discuss the exponentially growing…

Where have all the jobs gone..?

Open a newspaper or switch on the television and it seems that swingeing jobs cuts are still being announced on a regular basis. While we all acknowledge that the days of the ‘job for life’ are gone, traditionally there have always been sectors perceived as ‘safer’ career choices.

This is no longer necessarily the case. The reputation of the once lucrative financial sector has been decimated with the banking crisis and a swathe of cuts is still pending across the once safe public…

Sometimes the truth hurts

People who proclaim that most interview advice is simplistic irritate me. These are people who view advice on eye contact, handshakes, how to answer difficult questions, and avoiding smoking before an interview, as obvious and unworthy of  mention. Their "expert" advice is often sarcastic, blunt, and insulting.

But the fact remains that occasionally some of these…

1 in 3 Companies Reject Candidates Due to Social Media

There has been a lot of talk and debate recently about just how much weight companies put on social media when considering candidates for their open positions—specifically, how much companies are using social media to SCREEN potential hires.

Well, thanks to a…

Although I respect the many bloggers who have taught me, I've never taken on the challenger. "What better opportunity?", I'm thinking.…
