Recruiters…Tied Up, or free the shackles…

I’m back at work this week after a refreshing 3 week break - if you can call driving 4,500km’s from one end of Australia to the other, with a 2 & 4 year old in the back seat a refreshing break…

‘Are we there yet?’

‘Can we stop at McDonalds?’

‘Are we there yet?’

‘I’ve got to go to the toilet…’

‘Are we there yet?’ I’m sure you get the general idea….

Anyway, back at work I was tucking into my chicken salad sandwich and bottle of water in the food…

Personality VS Qualified

Here is a question I am sure everyone has heard a countless number of times: Do candidates who are qualified for the position get hired, or candidates with the better personality get hired?

In my experience thus far as a recruiter, I have noticed a little bit of both. Some of our clients barely look at a…

When is a consultant not a consultant?

When is a consultant not a consultant?

So I know allot of companies have changed the title of the staffing professionals to include the term “consultant”.  However the problem is their definition of consultant is incomplete. In most cases they are having the staffing professionals (SP) live up to the advice part of being a consultant but not the service part. They want their SPs not to solve the problem but instead advise and help…

Interviews are a waste of time ?

At the end of last year I attended one of Bill Boorman's recruitment unconferences. The basic concept is an open and unstructured forum where recruiters can discuss and debate topics. The very nature of the set-up attracts some interesting characters including a gentleman called Kevin Wheeler who offered a controversial idea that…

3 Ways Recruiters Can Make More Money With Contract Staffing

Everyone wants to make more money, and recruiters are no exception. One of easiest and most reliable ways for recruiters to make more money is to add contract staffing to their business models.

Contract staffing can help recruiters generate more income by:

  1. Providing a steady stream of income - When you make a direct placement, it's a one-time fee and you're done.  With contract staffing, you continue to make money over the course of the whole contract.…

It's a Candidates' Market If You Got Skills

We’ve still got high unemployment but it sure feels like a candidates’ market out there, at least for the highly desired candidates.

We’ve seen a number of positions lately where candidates are in high demand, and they’ve got options.  The sense of urgency is there for clients to schedule interviews quickly and do everything they can to land the right candidates.

This is always the case for unique and valuable candidates, but it has become more normal lately and is…

Keeping it real. Six tactics for hard-core recruiters in 2012

No doubt you have been overwhelmed with high-level forecasts from wise recruiting soothsayers about 2012 being the year of mobile recruiting, the critical importance of building talent communities, the rise of employer branding… and many other trends that, truthfully, you hardly understand and definitely have little control over.

These people are smart, and much of what they say is spot on. But a lot is total hogwash too, no more than a distraction, and certainly most of it, you…

Swamp People & Recruiters

I came home one evening this past winter to find my husband Jon watching a show on the History Channel.  He was just laughing and saying these people were crazy and that I’ve got to see it.  I had never heard of this show, so reluctantly I agreed to watch.

As he replayed the episode, my first thoughts were “what happened to my intelligent, educated husband…

It should be clear in 2012 that even the most intricate technology cannot replace the personal nature of recruiting. The process of…

Tea Leaves and Technology

The centuries-old art of tasseography, or reading of tea leaves, is at risk of extinction. The mysteries of having someone with a psychic gift discover meaning in the remnants of a cup of tea has already been eroded by our instantly accessible media. A quick online search not only reveals the tea leaf patterns for anyone to interpret, but also gives instruction on how to prepare the cup of tea…

Hobbies and Interests Section on a Resume? Well...

This is a fun topic that I talk with candidates about.  At length, even.  As a recruiter, I need to make sure that all of my candidate's resumes are great before submitting them.  So, I go through it with them, as opposed to creating something new or editing without authorization.  Every candidate, for the most part, comes in to meet with me prior to being submitted so that I can judge their interview skills, as well as go over the resume.

Well, the funniest part of this review is the…
