The Customer is NOT Always Right!!

Recruiting and sales; or Sales and recruiting. Which comes first and which is more important? Whether we wish to admit it, both are part of the very same industry, just at differing degrees on the scale. Just because you are a great recruiter doesn't mean you'll have a long career as a salesperson and the same can be said about Sales People potentially not doing well recruiting others. If you happen to be one of those rare few that can do both, and do them well--Congratulations!

Both…

RE: the counter offer

This is one of the ugliest issues we have to deal with in our profession. I have worked both as an executive recruiter and on the inside as a VP of Human Resources. Having been on both sides of the desk there are few things more damaging than loosing a candidate to a counter offer. Without going through all of the issues i.e. (lost time, creatability, money, etc.) I tackle this issue right up front. One of the first things I tell my candidate to do if they indicate any interest in entertaing… Continue

Conducting Legal Background Checks on Contractors

It is standard operating procedure for many, if not most, employers to check the criminal backgrounds of their new direct-hires. But as contractors increasingly are filling vital roles in organizations that require them to have access to sensitive information, it is important that their criminal backgrounds also be checked . . . and that the proper procedure is followed when those checks are conducted.

When an employer uses an outside vendor to conduct…

Hiring The Right Personality

A large part of the human capital supply chain is the acquisition and sourcing of many talents – but the process of obtaining these assets in the first place is also an important detail. Resumes are read, interviewees are spoken to, and decisions are made. Quality hiring practices are too frequently abandoned because of the inconvenience of finding the proper employee in a sufficient amount of time. There are a number of ways to ease the process and the one I’m addressing today is…

Preparing for Counter Offers before they Occur!

Slouch’s blog post on “ A Counter Offer of Biblical Proportions” enticed me to share some thoughts on why it’s important to deal with the Counter Offer issue very early on in the recruitment cycle; regardless of whether or not your candidate will get a Counter Offer.…

Is social recruiting a symptom – or a solution?

Is social recruiting a symptom of larger problems in the world of recruitment – or is it a solution to recruitment woes? Let me argue both sides of this…

What should the next generation of recruiting technology look like?

We talk a lot on this blog about the technology that exists today that can help your organization recruit more cheaply and effectively. But today I want to talk about and get your opinions on where recruiting technology is going and what pain points technology can solve for recruiters.

The big question is: where do you think innovation is needed in the recruiting space? Distribution of jobs? Social Networks? Metrics & Analytics? Identifying candidates? Something else?

The Human Touch Is What Recruiting Is All About

When I first began my recruiting career I had an old school manager that explained to me how the job is really sales and that it is best to view your commodity as being people. I took it for what it was and went

on my way to begin building my desk. Sure there were a number of sales

techniques that I learned along the way. Some that worked, and others

that I need not mention again, but I never lost sight of that people

aspect. In fact I would often tell people that my…

Internal versus agency recruitment – the value of being a candidate, not a £ sign

‘I really want to work with people’

This is one of the standard answers given when asked ‘why do you want to become a recruitment consultant?’ This was certainly my answer when I started out in the recruitment field some years ago.

Admittedly I didn’t fully understand where my career might take me but I did know that my strength was in building relationships. So I undertook my new role with gusto under the (now fake) illusion that I would be building relationships, helping…

Hiring Managers and the Matrix !!

Hiring Managers and the Matrix !!

In this, the last of the four part series on metrics' and goals, we will discuss a little know, but important metric. The metrics' by which we measure our hiring managers. That is right; your hiring manager should be goaled on staffing orientated metrics also. After all, they play a very important part in hiring and in the end, it is for them.

In one of my previous blog entries, I mentioned the team "hiring team".…

Can Leaders Learn Anything from Baseball?

The Hot Stove was fired up early this year with the new policy of Major League Baseball being anyone who was eligible automatically become a free agent upon the last pitch in the World Series. As a Cardinals Fan, this was a welcome change because it meant that I had an excuse to start paying attention again.…

The Healthcare Employment Boom - Preparing for the Future

By Karen Bucks, an iCIMS Blogger

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare industry is in for an extraordinary boom in this decade. “Wage and salary employment is expected to increase by 22 percent as compared to an expected 11 percent increase for all other industries combined.” I must say, that’s great if you are job hunting in that industry. The BLS further states,… Continue

Creating Better Beliefs

“If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” – Henry Ford

Clearly, Ford thought he could accomplish great feats in the automobile industry. And he did.

What have you been telling yourself you can’t do? Do you believe you can’t win a particular account? Are you telling yourself you can’t find a certain type of candidate? What negative messages have you been repeating about your inability to increase your margins or fees?

Radical Talent Management

There has been very little written on a topic I’d like to call Radical Talent Management. Hiring and talent management continue to evolve at a much slower pace than other technologies that are critical to business success.

The word “radical” is derived from the Latin “radicalis” which means root, basis, or source. I would bet that most of us think of the word radical not by its first or second … Continue

Timing, timing, timing!

If real estate has "location, location, location" then recruitment should certainly coin "timing, timing, timing" for our industry!

Once, I had a candidate in final stages with a client on a Friday. I was buzzing about my weekend happy as a bee. Monday morning, I learn the hiring manager went to lunch over the weekend and bumped into someone that used to work for them at a different company, but they hadn't seen each other in 10 years. They got to talking about their current companies… Continue
