Beware of FREE

Over the past few weeks, there have been big changes from well-known technology companies including Facebook, Twitter, and Ning. At the core of many of these changes is a recognition that free only works to a certain point. With this in mind, it makes sense for those who are considering new Social Recruiting services to be cautious whenever a site lists one of its major benefits as free. If you can’t figure out how they are making money now or plan to in the future, it is very risky to base…

What is our attachment to Paper?

It is no secret that technology is moving industries to a paperless system. I still remember writing papers with a pen and paper as opposed to creating a Word Document and using spell check as my spelling guru. At this time, you couldn’t even find lined paper at my desk let alone a pen to write with. Everything is on my hard drive, or back up disk drive, USB, and shared drives.…

There's no crying in Football! or should there be?

I had a great day today. Did one of the things I love doing most of the world. I went to the MCG with my Dad and my son (and cousin and 90,000 of my best friends) to watch an AFL game. I just love it. The atmosphere, the food, the shouting, the passion, the raw combative power and nature of the game.

I get pretty fired up at these games, I'm not my normal calm self, I kind of get involved. However I have had to calm/centre myself, now I have to be an example to my son. I do need to… Continue

What Success Really Means

Success. Is it defined by actions? How you treat others? The number of fills you obtain?

A month ago we had the privilege to meet the American Idol from last year Kris Allen at an event I had won tickets to from our local radio station, among the perks were the opportunity to discuss success with Kris Allen and what it meant to him. It was a brief exchange, but he said in so many words, that hard work pays…

Real Recruiters Don't Post Jobs!

I just picked up a new recruiting project and one of the first things the client said was, "Will you post this job?" And I immediately said, "NO!". I don't think I even let him finish the sentence. I am a real recruiter! I don't post jobs, I hunt for my candidates! Posting is for inexperienced, slacker recruiters. Seriously, if my candidate comes from a posting, what value have I brought to the client?

I pride myself on…

Nothing wrong with the basics

You just need to do it. Nike has a point!

Switch off your tweetdeck, log out of facebook, put those Recruiting blinkers on and just go for it. In football parlance... get your head down, put your bum up and just do.

Read the cv's, get on the phone, organise interviews, meet people, get activity happening. Do the reference checks, get the appropriate sign off, give the offer, close the deal! Shhhhh don't tell anyone, but that's your job Mr Recruiter.

Social… Continue

IT Job Market is Growing! Is your company/client ready?

IT Job Market is Growing! Is your company ready?

Over the past few months, actually since November of 09 the IT Job Market has been changing drastically from the overall “DOWN Market” that we have seen since late 2007. Across the IT recruiting world we have seen an increase in overall Job’s posted on sites such as Monster, Dice and the like. We have also seen an increase in the number of Perm and Contract positions that are not posted, but are filled through word of mouth or through… Continue

Hiring is Back: Hot Technology Jobs

It’s on – technology hiring is in full swing. For the past 12 years we’ve proven to be a leading indicator of market conditions, especially for the technology markets: people stop hiring when things get scary (see last year), and they start hiring when things look good. We’ll be the first to tell you, things are looking very good. And, as if you needed any more proof, we’re actively hiring technology recruiters and recruiting account managers in our… Continue

Are Facebook’s Recent Changes Beneficial for Social Recruiting?

A few weeks ago during the 3rd annual developer conference, Facebook rolled out some important changes to their platform. Underlying all of these new changes is their vision for a more social web. While the social web has many potential benefits, the key consideration is, are these changes beneficial for Social Recruiting?

Opt-out vs. Opt-in

Talent management will be the key as the market recovers

For all my blog posts please see "The Savage Truth"

As the market recovers, one of the first impacts on our industry will be a revival of the temp and contract market. Temp-to-perm will be huge. Employers will see increased work volumes as the economy recovers, but will “dip their toes” into the labour market at first, hiring flexible solutions initially. But then, as momentum is gained and confidence returns, they will start to…
