Phony Social Networking IDs for Recruiters - fair play?

Obvious phony identities are encountered from time to time on linkedin, facebook, and twitter as well as several other locations where recruiters see potential to find candidates. Whether the name is John Doe, William Peters, Jane Foster, or something with some originality, recruiters set up fake identities for a number of reasons. Maybe they are running a secondary business that they do not want their employers to know about. Maybe they don't want ex-employers to know they are breaking their… Continue

What differentiates your recruiting model?

I attended an HR Conference in Fort Worth, Texas at the tail end of 2009 and had the opportunity to meet with dozens of exhibitors and attendees who work in the HR space. Par for the course; the event coordinators placed all of the staffing and recruiting exhibitors in the same row, which enabled me to listen to the presentations/elevator pitches of a…

"Why should we not hire you?"

This is a recent question I am seeing asked of my candidates. I see multiple ways of answering this and this appears to be a new twist on "What are your weaknesses?". What are your thoughts on the best response to this?

Thanks,

Inverse Recruiting for "The Greatest Employee in the World"

Hey Team,

I'll be honest here, I don't know much about recruiting. What I do know more than my fair share about is job hunting. Although, now that I think about it, I could sum up all that knowledge pretty easily with two little words...

It sucks.

In today's world of Craigslist, Monster and CareerBuilder the 21 million Americans that faced unemployment last year… Continue

Thing about Leadership… One Size does not fit all

Many people have their own opinion of Leadership and who should or should not be considered a leader. This also is true for the “who” should be developed and kept out of leadership. Of course I have my own opinions (that’s why I write). In listening to HR Happy Hour – Episode 35 “The Leadership Show”, I agreed and disagreed with many opinions. That’s the great thing about… Continue

How to follow up after the telephone interview

In today’s economy, there are a lot of people applying for the few jobs available. I know this because I’m one of the people doing the applying.

My question is: How long should I wait after a first telephone interview before concluding the employer isn’t interested in me?

Let’s assume I’ve already sent an appropriate thank you note and called a couple days after to confirm it was received (I do). What then?

On the one hand, I don’t want to be pestering the… Continue

No time for the Price is Right

I have been sick for the past several days from a cold that seems to be making it around the city. While I was at work the other day pale as a ghost I was told to go home and rest before I make others sick as well. Rest sounded great as it is exactly what I needed to help get rid of this cold however, my Blackberry that I love so much has become my greatest enemy in my quest for rest.…

"3 Reasons I'll Read Your Resume"

I heard it again today, “I’ve applied to 300 jobs in the last month.”

WHAT????

Why would anyone waste their time like that? Sounds to me like this person was simply doing the “Click and Go” dance with his computer. I certainly understand the desperation that comes with the economic climate we all live in today, but I’m concerned.

If a…
