Corporate recruiters and agencies are overwhelmed with job applicants in these economic times. Therefore, it is extremely important to make sure that all employment communications are planned prior to getting in the ring. However, I have witnessed a bulk of organizations, and company representatives that do not respond or follow up to jobseeker.
I'm sure this is not because they do not care, or do not have the manners to communicate. I believe most likely that it is due to poor…

So I completed some job search/resume writing/interviewing seminars last week. Things went pretty well. I had about six people out to each one, but at least they all seemed interested.
I may have some more thoughts later on, but one of the main revelations I had was that I talk too much.
Cheers.

You’ve been laid off. I’ve been laid off. Your neighbor has been laid off. The unemployment rate is astronomical and everyone you know is looking for a job. Get over it and start acting like a grown up. There I said it. Now is not the time to freak out and worry about your situation. Now is the time to man (woman) up, get out there, and take care of your responsibilities. Welcome to the tough love post.
After you’ve taken a day or two to cry and wallow in your tears, you need a plan.…

Remember back in college when you weighed all of 96 pounds and half of it was hair? You were lean and mean back then. You ate cereal for lunch and dinner, everything was paid in cash. Rent was like $75 that you were always paid late.
Yeah, those were the good days. Life was easy and the only gizmo you had was a math calculator your parents bought for your birthday freshmen year. Hey don’t laugh. I still have it and it…

I happened to take part in a discussion with others in the recruiter/HR/career services world and the topic was about video resumes becoming the standard.
There was a definite strong opinion in one direction on this. Before I offer up my opinion and the general feeling of the discussions, I would like to get some feedback from you about it from both a job seeker and a recruiter/HR perspective. I…

Tweeting Off
So, I was at this party a couple of weeks ago. All sorts of twitterati were there. There was even a small shrine for our forbears, Paul DeBettignies and Jim Durbin. The place was throbbing and crowded . If you yelled loud enough, you could hear yourself over the music. Lots of people lined up to yell at each other while pretending to listen.
You know the scene.
Anyhow, I walked over to the bar to get a drink. Along the way, I struck up a conversation with a…

One of the most professionally rewarding experiences for me is the opportunity to mentor students on career choices. I love wide-eyed, the world is an oyster, enthusiasm. I received a tweet last night from a UCBerkeley Psych and Linguistic double major student contemplating a career in HR - specifically recruiting - I decided to come here to help her with her choices by invoking the power of all of us to answer her question.
"Hi Karla, how'd you get started in HR? and most HR asst…

From time to time (weekly?) I get see to some rather incredibly funny things we humans do. The job is rife with it. For fun I thought I'd post this stupidity. Most of it has a lesson to it. About like the old Aesop's fables do. Usually in the form of life slapping you hard enough that we actually listen.
So for amusement may I present to you this weeks ignorance.
The following is an actual email I received awhile back. It is from our consultant we had recruited for a nice paying…

There's no doubt there's been plenty written on being careful when it comes to what you publish about yourself online. But when it comes to your career - you can't careful enough. Certain things that seem fun or kitchy now, might come back to bite you sooner or later. These "perma-prints" could follow you for years, maybe even the rest of your career.
Case in point, a few years ago, we had an intern working for the company from a very prestigious school's masters program. Because of…

Be really (really) careful how you name things. And, NEVER use the same word to describe two different things.
Sloppy naming can lead to minor frustrations, or it can lead to some really big problems for your users. The road to sloppy naming is paved by the careless use of synonyms or by naming two different things with the same word or phrase.
First of all, let’s look at synonyms (the more obvious of the two naming blunders). When considering a naming framework for…

In this
article from the Business Profiles section of apple.com, Twitter is touted as a progressive, conscientious company and employer. But, as you can imagine, Apple does quite a bit of tooting its own horn. It rings a little hollow to call Twitter a “triumph of humanity” when the latter half of the article is a Mac love-fest. In the entire article, the name “Twitter” is mentioned 32 times (yes, I counted). On the other hand, “Mac”…

Sponsorship used to be a pain to deal with. It's much worse now. In my opinion it is almost always not worth dealing with. I have people try to make the case all the time that with NAFTA, a TN Visa is no problem, but not clients. A great client took the time this week to lay out the sponsorship situation from a Canadian company taking someone from the US or another country and I thought this would be well worth sharing.
"There are 2 steps and the first is rather lengthy. A company…

There are two
simple steps for
great cover letters:
1.
Always include the cover letter in the
body of the email you are sending. If the recruiter has to click to open a separate document in order to read your cover letter, chances are that they won’t bother.
2.
Target each cover letter to the specific position for which you are applying. Generic cover letters that tell how great
YOU are and what
YOU want to do without…
