How I Won SourceCon Challenge #2

So I was excited about SourceCon challenge #2, as it appears I was a close runner-up to Mike Notaro who won Challenge #1 and I was determined to find the answer to the second challenge.

9 AM PST Monday, July 16th, I was awaiting an e-mail with instructions, and nada, so at 9:05 AM I went to the website and lo and behold I was looking at a real…

Recruitment Techniques!!!!!!!!!!!

There are so many problems that takes to convince a candidate for a contract position. Does anybody has some specific ideas to how to converse in these cases?

Seriously?

I have been up to my neck in employee performance reviews for the past two weeks, so needless to say, I am a little behind on all the gossip. But, I just came across the hullaballoo regarding Karen M and the ERE. All I can say is: "Seriously?" I mean, how does something get to that point? Aren't we all professionals? And adults? I am just sitting here with a blank stare on my face right now. Seriously?

To read more of the bizzaro world…

On HR and Staffing MIA or AWOL...

Quote for the Day: Tuesday, July 24, 2007

"If talent acquisition is to be the linchpin for how HR finds, develops and retains employees that drive their firm’s performance, then Staffing is truly the lead element in the war for talent and, for most, it is unequipped to do its job, poorly trained to operate as a team and poorly organized for the mission at hand."

Putting it all in perspective

Monday, July 9, 2007

Blogging in my field (recruiting and technology) is no easy task. I have found it is difficult to give an original though to a subject that has been so over talked by everyone from CEOs to HR professionals and beyond. Frightening terms like "the War…

In The Heat of the Day

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Sitting here in DC looking out the window at the hottest day of the year so far (suppose to hit 100 with about 50% humidity) I was thinking about the heat warnings they issue. You know on the news and the radio: "drink plenty of water, don't lock your dogs in the car, don't run or…

Recruiting Roadshow

Well, I finally have a minute between calls and emails and lions and tigers and bears! Oh my! Now, I can sit down and write a little review of the Recruiting Roadshow Unconference. Overall, let’s just say that

it was not a waste of time (scared you, didn’t I, Paul?). In fact, I gathered so much good information, I think my little newbie head might just burst.

The morning started with donuts. Lots and lot of donuts. Pink donuts.…

Hiring Lull in China

As of writing, the hiring process in China is slowing a little as expatriate managers from multinational companies begin to take their summer holidays. With many decision makers out of town the slowdown will continue until September, when school starts.

Many of the positions that arose after the Chinese New Year bonuses were…

The Economics of Sex and Staffing

The Economics of Sex and Staffing

Why is it that people who hold to being liberal, open-minded and educated can so quickly throw all that away when the subject of sex and babies comes up? How is it that they so quickly confuse correlation with causality?

I'll offer two examples and ask readers to enlighten me. The first involves a chapter from a recent book by economist Steven Landsburg. The second originates from a lecture I heard this…

Regarding Outsourcing job functions...

"The empire of Rome collapsed when the Romans relied on paying outsiders to do their fighting for them. I wonder what will happen if today’s major corporations go on relying on superficiality, while paying consultants (who aren’t much better) to do their thinking for them?"

On the truth and shades of grey...

Quote for the Day: Monday, July 23rd, 2007

"Offering people an A/not-A choice is often useful as a way to find out what they're really thinking. The world is rarely pure black or pure

white but it's also rarely a perfect 18% grey. People often use

shades-of-grey arguments as a way to deflect facts which might refute

their thesis. The humorist Steven Potter wrote that if you were ever

pressed to offer an opinion on events in a foreign country,…

Search engine wish list

Assuming NO limitations on the technology what would recruiters vote for as their top features to add to search engines?

Some of mine:

1. Access to all results. When I do a search and see 3500 results, and can only get to a maximum of 1000...ahhhhh

2. Some control over the business logic in the ranking algorythm. - to much popularity means too much mob mentality.

3. The ability to perform 2 searches and create a concordance of results in a 3rd search - Example get…
