5 Things I have learned Coaching Recruiters

I spend my all day, every day coaching Recruitment Professionals who exist at all levels of this crazy game.  I am often surprised at how much we all have in common.  Here are just a few of those silly things:

1.  Someone once told us that Recruiting is EASY.

Every time I meet a Recruiter the first thing they say to me is, “I don’t know how I became a Recruiter.”

They of course remember the person who got them into…

How do you handle a candidate with a large ego?

I had a highly qualified candidate interview with my client about 2 1/2 weeks ago. My client wanted to hire my candidate on the spot (don't you love when that happens?). My candidate let myself and my client know that he has 2 pending offers on the table and would like to wait to see the outcome and should know within 3 weeks. My client still really wants to hire my candidate and is growing impatient. The problem is my candidate has a very large ego and is trying to "run the show". I really…

The 'Lucky Seven' Business Development Strategies for Recruiters

Nothing interests a CEO more than the topic of increasing revenue. Nothing.  If anyone tries to tell you different, they may be fooling themselves.  Sure, leading a company to greatness takes specific skills that are both innate and learned but the most important aspect of being a CEO is creating the pathways that will drive the company to dominate and/or thrive from a…

Wally’s Rules of Staffing

In spite 2 successful Navy recruiting assignments, I knew nothing about the staffing industry. Nonetheless, after retirement I was hired by a small executive search firm.

Seven of us were hired at about the same time and trained together once a week under the tutelage of the firm’s patriarchal president.…

When Must a Contractor Be Paid Overtime?

The Sacramento Business Journal recently reported that lawsuits under the Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA) have risen 33% over the past three years. With that in mind, it seems like a good time to discuss when contractors must be paid overtime.

First, let's…

Where do jobs fit in your Social Recruiting feeds?

Yesterday, I posed the question on Twitter “What would some social media best practices that recruiting organizations should live by?” and I got a few responses.  The one I liked the best and will be the subject of this post is from Chris Cruz (@Chris_SDD):

Are You Using a Gold-Medal ATS?

Read the latest post from Elise Jennings!

The Olympic Games are underway! Just six days ago we watched 10,000+ athletes walk out during the opening ceremony waving and smiling at over 4 million international spectators. One can only imagine what a population increase of 4 million people would be like. The UK went through a great deal of preparation in London to not only accommodate the visitors, but also when it came to the organization and readiness of the workforce at…

14 Leadership Traits

Everything I know about leadership I learned in the Marines.

I enlisted in the Marine Corps on my 19th birthday after a half-hearted attempt at college. I spent the next twelve years  learning to lead using the 14 Leadership Traits and 11 Leadership Principles. Nearing the end of my third enlistment my wife and I discovered that she was pregnant with our first child. So, I decided to hang up my guns.

Since then, four children have come and a dozen years have passed. I've read…

Secrets to Hiring Great People

According to Lou Adler, author of Hire with Your Head, “There is nothing more important—to your personal and company success—than hiring great people. Nothing.”  So, how do you do it? The answer isn’t always as easy as 1-2-3, but here are a few tips for heading in the…

If recruitment was invented today this is how it would work.

We’ve been doing some recruiting recently and let’s not mince words: it’s a gigantic pain in the backside. My company is now entering a real growth situation and we’re starting to staff up and when starting the hiring process the other day it occurred to me just how backward and upside down the whole hiring malarkey is. So it got me thinking……’we’re hiring a web developer, in a perfect world, how would I like it to happen’ and this is what I came up…

Is resume optimizing cheating?

Is resume optimizing cheating?

So recently I reposted a few posts to help people looking for work. One of the posts was about optimizing a resume for ATS and resume databases. I posted or reposted it, and got some interesting feedback form a few recruiters. One said I was telling their secrets, that by telling candidates how to optimize their resumes it will mean they will have more junk resumes to read.  Another said it was…

Considering the Times Editorial on Background Checks

Last week,  the New York Times ran an editorial regarding employment screening and how employment background checks are often inaccurate and cause otherwise innocent people their chances for employment.   The editorial requested that the supervising agencies get a tighter control around the CRA's or Consumer Reporting Agencies.    Upon reading the editorial, more than a few recruiters and employers, to say nothing of Consumer Reporting Agencies,  had their proverbial bowels in a…

Do You Speak My Language? Or Further Reflections of a Rookie Recruiter

By Jennifer Copley, Rookie Recruiter, Q4B

“To have another language is to possess a second soul.”  - Charlemagne

I am not sure when I first fully appreciated the importance of having learned a second language. I took French in high school and college and most of my friends and peers took some language as part of their course requirements. For many of us it was just another subject, sometimes required, that we needed to pass in order to graduate.

In college I took…

Candidates (and recruiters) do Stupid Things

The first staffing lesson I learned was, “Candidates do stupid things”. My boss at the time was a tough and cynical agency recruiter (headhunter) with 10 years experience. Wally had been rode hard with had plenty of stories to prove his point. That lesson was driven home yesterday in a most painful…

3 Recruiting Lessons that we can learn from the MLB Trade Deadline

If you haven’t learned by now, I’m kind of a sports geek.  Not only do I geek out for the NBA Draft but I also find the Major League Baseball trade deadline to be incredibly interesting.

It’s at this point in the MLB season that can make or break a team’s playoff chances.  General Managers are currently deciding where their team stands in the playoff race and if they…
