Job Search Tip: Too Much Information on your Social Networks

I get a lot of great comments from my readers, which I love. One of these was a response to MySpace Killed the Candidate…critical job interview tip, in which I told the cautionary tale of one of my candidates leaving too much information on her MySpace page and losing a job opportunity: avoid such issues by ”setting your social networks to private.” I agree that it is best to set your social network sites to private, and be careful who you accept as a friend.

Still, there are things… Continue

Transitions... or How to Avoid the Medusa Complex

Our climate is pretty moderate here in the Pacific Northwest. We have a gorgeous fall season with chilly temps, morning frost, and rain. We occasionally get snow in the winter – along with more rain and chilly temps. Then spring comes along and we have more temperate days with lots of rain, occasional thunderstorms, and beautiful spring flowers. The one constant throughout the year is rain… or as we call it – liquid sunshine. It’s good for the complexion.

The best part about our… Continue

You Don't Recruit Chuck Norris, Chuck Norris Recruits You

Candidate Control is about as basic as you get with recruiting; right behind picking up the phone and dialing. But time and time again I see it as a best practice that is totally ignored. If you are going to recruit the top talent, you better be respected by that group and LISTEN to them.

Getting Roundkicked into Yesterday

This includes knowing what your candidate knows. I work on the corporate side, so if I tell you as an agency recruiter that I want to speak with a… Continue

What's The Best Sourcing Application/Platform In The Industry?

Can anyone help me here? I am aware of Sourcepoint, but don't know the rest - any thoughts? Is there functionality in today's Sourcing apps that you'd like to see? Are there methods that would make your life easier, meaning ranging from search string generation to campaign management? I know Salesforce.com can be configured . . . but unless you're purchasing a comprehensive solution (add-on), customizing SF can be rough.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Dos Candidates, Por Favor

One time, my husband and I went to Puerto Rico and, since my foreign language classes consisted of Latin and French (read: useless), I was a bit worried about the prospect of Spanish. He assured me that he was On. It. His extensive training in high school and college Spanish would fare us well.Flash forward to our vacation…going through the drive through line at Burger King (again).

The Marriage is Over. He dumped me on Twitter.

When you stop to think about it, perception is an extremely powerful branding tool. It can make or break you. It never ceases to amaze me how well social media enables us to brand ourselves, our company and/or our service.

But there are some downsides to branding and perception via social media.

Here’s my story:

A few weeks ago, I received a note from Twitter that @Tweet05 (not his real name to protect his identify) was following me.

I always check… Continue

Overcoming My Fears Of Change And Uncertainty

There I was 40 feet in the air, having just climbed the pirates net to the top of the high ropes course. Sitting on the perch looking at where to go next, it occurred to me that I was scared x&*%less.

I called to “Big Dog,” the group leader, and asked what I do next. His response was to “follow your instinct”. For 23 years in recruiting I followed my instinct and for the most part it led me the right way. Other times that old instinct got me in trouble. “What if my instinct is… Continue

Giddying on up....

Well, it wasn't too long ago I wrote a post here about how potentially my company was changing the perception it has of its Recruitment Division.... Maybe I was a little early in my prediction.

I have been a little disappointed in recent reactions I'm afraid, and for those who may read this with the hope of getting some pearls of wisdom, you too could be disappointed, it has the potential to become just a me venting session... (my apologies in advance)

Happy 4th of July

It's Independance day and I can think of no better way to spend it than with family and friends. My daughter Claire chose to ride her razor in the West Lake Pond Parade, while my son Jackson rode in a two seater wagon with his buddy Shea. As usual, it was a fun family adventure mixed with friends we hadn't seen in a while and some professional networking -… Continue

Cut it short

It's 4th of July, a national holiday in the US, NOT in Argentina. As I am sitting in our office, I take my own 4th of July break to think about a LinkedIn post that was brought to my attention by Maureen Sharib - to whom I am very thankful for so openly sharing her ideas and insights about sourcing/recruiting.

The LinkedIn question was "Which of these 10 hiring/interviewing mistakes is the most important one to your eyes?" Click… Continue

Reflections on "Fit" Via New FC Article, "The Texas Rangers' Young GM"

Happy 4th of July, RBC - remember, as Robert Kiyosaki puts best, "It's un-American to pay taxes." Hey, we weren't after independence just for independence's sake!

So I came across an interesting article this morning on FastCompany.com (color me surprised!) titled, "The Texas Rangers' Young GM".

I'll admit - as a baseball fan going back to the Mets title in '86, I never thought I'd see a 30-yr old… Continue
