The Client Side - Cut our fees? NOT!

Every once in a while (in good times and bad) I have a conversation with a prospective client like the following which happened earlier this week.

"We are looking for a licensed mechanical engineer with heavy experience in HVAC. We will pay a 10% commission and expect a one year guarantee."

(response: Are you kidding?)

I didn't say that out loud but I did have to laugh to myself and those were my thoughts. The subject of reducing fees also came up this week in… Continue

"You're overqualified" is a crappy way of telling someone "You're too old"

I know of a particular IT recruiting agency where they'll tell people they're overqualified when what they really mean to say is "You're too old." Despite the legacy of Dr. King (imagine how bad it would be in recruiting had it not been for him, LBJ and the CRA and subsequent legislation) and the now President Obama, there are still far too many associated with recruiting (and this includes hiring managers) for whom to call neanderthal would mean insulting real… Continue

John Thain's Office: The Ground is Shifting Under Our Feet......

We are living in tight times. Wasteful expenses on personal pride and prestige can now come back to hurt you in a big way.

Thain's office remodel, regardless of its genesis and no matter how much or little he personally cared about it matter little now; it might have just bought him a ticket to a small room for a few years......

Conspicious consumption was already looking a little shaky, but it may become downright toxic in the next few years. I remember when I was first… Continue

War of SURVIVAL - New Erena

It seems like the recession period will stay longer than expected, and everybody is getting affected drastically. The companies are finding out all possible ways to cut down their expenses to sustain this pressure. “Recruitment advertising in a sea of change.

Job advertising has come a long way since the ‘help wanted’ sign. With globalisation, the Internet and media fragmentation exposing job seekers to more employment opportunities than ever before - but simultaneously making them harder to find - Human Resources managers are finding it increasingly difficult to get the top talent’s attention. The… Continue

Being rejected can be very liberating

Recently, a question was put to me: "How do you take criticism, without it making you upset?"

An entrepreneur had offered an invention to be reviewed by a respected catalog for inclusion. After a lengthy period of silence, followed by numerous emails seeking an answer, the entrepreneur was declined for some minor health and safety concerns of the invention.

The entrepreneur became incensed and went through the five stages of grief all at once. He said: "I take rejection… Continue

Our Customer and Partner, the Hiring Manager

The Hiring Manager is our customer. Without a Partnership with the Hiring Manager we cannot be successful. It is that simple.

The Hiring Manager needs to know that you have developed a strong working relationship with the candidate on everything the candidate needs to be closed on and the candidate… Continue

When is it OK to fire your client?

Maybe I'm just thinking out loud, but it seems that for every great customer you find, there are a handful you are indifferent to, and a couple that can make your blood boil at the drop of a hat. The list of offenses is a mile long and could be anything from never giving specific feedback on disqualifications up to refusing to pay a fee. No matter what the transgression, recruiters still need to make placements to get paid, so when do you move a company from the 'client' to the 'source'… Continue

What’s in the Wind and Air?

The Obama Biden administration has spoken a considerable amount about Green, Renewable, and Sustainable Development as a part of their economic stimulus plan. Has anyone heard of companies, or startups in the Sustainable Energy field that are looking to staff up in the near future or are currently hiring?

I'm curious to see what the buzz on the street is for the industry. I've heard lots of talk, but...

Part 1: Why Online? -Basic South African Internet Statistics

The South African online population is typically behind other first world countries such as the United States, or the United Kingdom in terms of internet usage. This is due to a number of factors including legislation, high pricing structures and education amongst others.

That said, the population of users who are online in South Africa has grown by just over 13% from 3.5 million in 2007 to 5.1 million in 2008.

With a population of just over 44,3 million, that represents a… Continue

Government & Military Jobs Thrive As Obama Takes Office

In a time when many industries are declining as a result of the poor economic conditions, it appears as though Government & Military jobs are continuing to thrive. According to the December 2008 Milgram Report, this industry experienced a 33.63% increase in the number of jobs in December 2008 when compared the number of jobs posted in November 2008.

On the flip side, the report indicated that Military & Government Resumes… Continue

Should I stay or should I go? Now that is the question!

I’m sure that The Clash didn’t have your career choices in mind when they wrote “should I stay or should I go”, but in conversation after conversation with both clients and candidates it continue to be a major theme.

Candidates continue to worry about the uncertain economy, and even if their current employment is in flux with layoffs or cost cutting happening they remain hesitant to even look at new positions much less… Continue

Claudia's Wednesday Wisdom

Opening a can of sweet condensed milk to give a troubled employee some "southern comfort" is all well and good until you realize you've opened a can of worms instead.
