And they still want guaranteed bonuses

I had lunch with a friend this past Monday. He's simply one of the best software developers I ever met and he credits me with saving his life - back during the summer of 2001, I recruited him to a software company I was helping to build and it was down to me and eSpeed. Being quietly persuasive must have helped because the eSpeed offer was for more money.

A few months later, many at eSpeed were murdered on 9/11 at… Continue

Corporate Recruiting VS. Agency Recruiting

Over the last 5 years, I have worked in the Agency/Executive Recruiting Space. I have several contacts who are on the corporate and Agency side. According to my sources, there is more opportunity on the Corporate side. My question to my fellow recruiters, when is it a good time to explore the corporate side?

Gatekeeper as Friend

Did you all see Greg Pankow's article yesterday (1/28) here on ERE about using VoiceMail systems to get directly to the person(s) you want to talk with without having to talk to the Gatekeeper? It's terrific and you can find the step-by-step instructions here.

But what happens when you don't mind talking to the Gatekeeper - the Gatekeeper as friend - and all you want to know is who are all the… Continue

Millions of Jobs to be "Created," Will We Get To Help?

I keep hearing that the current Obama administration is claiming they will create up to 3 million jobs within the next year or two. My question is, “how much of that pie can we expect to serve?”

If it’s mostly government jobs that are created, then we might miss out. If it’s private sector jobs that are created, then we could be in for a wild ride. I’m curious what others think? Which direction do you think this is headed and will we have the opportunity to be a part of… Continue

Claudia's Wednesday Wisdom

This week Claudia kicks off the conversation with her list of five things that "Worried but Planning" should do in the uncertain times many recruiting managers are faced with.

What would you add to the list? What's a Recruiter to Do?

Happy Wednesday, people!… Continue

Tree-hugger, bleeding heart, idealist...call me what you like, I just prefer to do the right thing.

I feel the need to start this post by stating the blatantly obvious. Times are tough. More people are unwillingly out of work than there have been in a long time. Houses aren't selling. Major corporations in numerous industries are laying off workers by the thousands. Some people find it easy to lose hope.

I would prefer not to.

I stated in an earlier post that recruiters need to think about the candidate experience, but I am driven to take that a step further today. How… Continue

Circumventing Gatekeepers Using Documented Voicemail System Features.

Voicemail Surfing: Circumventing Gatekeepers Using Documented Voicemail System Features.

Having trouble with gatekeepers? Do you need to speak to someone directly and keep getting the nth degree from the company receptionist or their administrative assistant?

I have read many articles with suggestions to resolve this problem. They usually involve rusing (aka lying), calling after hours and leaving a message for the person you need to speak to (wouldn’t you rather speak to… Continue

a helpful image ( for me at least)

what I was thinking about just now:

I remember the wonderful image in my brain of a table at my client covered with checks made out to my agency and the only thing missing was a signature on those checks and the only way to get that signature was by finding the right person who was qualified and in a position to say yes, I accept the offer with your client. It was a motivating image. I always imagined a big table.

Jerry, How would you obamicon that one.

What's a Recruiter to Do?

Dear Claudia,

Our company is downsizing like a lot of companies right now, and I’ve recently had to lay off some of my recruiters. What can I do to keep the remaining members of my team busy and motivated until things start picking up again?

Planning but Worried

Dear PBW,

I love that you’ve even asked this question, because it says that you're a good boss; don’t stop there, though. Expand your horizon to the bigger picture, because we both know… Continue

Easy come easy go

Sorry, we can't sell to you right now, we're in the middle of designing our new advertising campaign.

I telephoned to speak with a person who had attended a seminar I gave in Cairns (Great Barrier Reef - for those readers not familiar with Australia's north-eastern coast). This person worked for Quicksilver, the high speed catamaran that travels out to the islands. The individual who answered my call promptly informed me, "No, she quit two weeks ago."

"May I… Continue
