After two hours of singing, dancing, and acting, the cast of Newsies was still smiling, as were my wife, Holly, and I. They had just delivered, and we had just watched, one of the best shows we've seen on Broadway in the past decade.
Did one or more cast members dance out of step, flub a line, or sing slightly out of tune? Did the crew miss a cue, misplace a prop, or misdirect a…

The president of our company and I were recently invited to attend a keynote given by one the 50 most influential people in business internationally and I could go on and on with all their credits but will reframe. She was asked what bit of information she would pass on to someone just getting started. I could give you her answer but that was not the point of this post.
The more I thought about her speech the more I thought how there is really little difference in those at the top…

Is Fit a deterrent to innovation?
All you hear when you talk to companies is fit, the right fit, fits in with the team, etc. The problem is fit, can and usually does mean ensuring that the people you bring in, are of similar type, thoughts, skills, demeanor, and attitude. The problem with that is…

Is the customer always right? Nope. In fact, most of the time they are wrong. So, why do sales staff continue to believe the customer is right? This goes on at every recruiting company, and I see it most with either inexperienced sales staff (obvious) or sales staff that have come from different industries. The problem usually is the fear that telling a client "no", that terrible two letter combination, will result in a bad relationship. I have never, and will repeat the word NEVER,…

Chances are you've heard the phrase "Do what you do best and outsource the rest." That phrase rings particularly true when it comes to recruiters who make contract placements.
Contract staffing provides a great opportunity for recruiters to increase their sales and establish a steady, predictable income stream. But it also comes with a number of time-consuming and complex financial, administrative, and legal duties associated with employing the contractors, including…

I was wondering how others deal with a client who is looking to hire an independent contractor and pay them a salary of 60% of all proceeds generated by that position. Is it best to charge them a one-time service fee based on an "average" expected first year's salary or to charge them on a monthly basis for the first year?
Please advise. Love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this one. I see more and more employers going for ind. contractor positions.

Recruiters read hundreds, if not thousands, of CVs and cover letters during their days, so why not do them a favour and send them a concise, original and well-written cover letter? And the best bit is it's really not hard to do. Here's how:
Keep it short
This is key. Presuming your CV already runs to two pages (as we've mentioned before, two pages should be your maximum), then a cover letter amounting to anything more than one side of A4…

In the LinkedIn groups (TLS-TOC Lean & Six Sigma in particular) there has been an ongoing conversation about when you merge the three. In the course of the discussion we posted a comment regarding an output from a seminar we were facilitating which talked about an organization in which the job requisition was reviewed and approved three times by the same person in a hiring effort. One of participants replied that that was an indication of mismanagement not a system problem. He further…

Probation periods discourage employees from using your employee referral program, so why do companies even bother with them? Of the 1,100 employers that Careerify surveyed, the rationale for implementing and maintaining probation periods for employee referrals varied but few had merit. While corporations claim to have logic to preserving this practice, only the companies with truly “temporary” workforces (note: we classify “temporary” as those employees hired for ad-hoc work) had rhyme to…

We network with top talent on a daily basis, so we always come across top producers that are willing to throw in the towel. From our research, we know that these top producers receive calls from recruiters all the time! What caused the sudden change that makes an employee act on a recruiter's call at a particular point in time?
Though a lot of companies have their own…

From the start I should make clear this blog is about the exec search end of the market.
I've been thinking a lot lately about what I do, what value I add and how as a headhunter I make money. Of course one could argue it's a fairly simple model, sell a retained piece of work, find an employee, get paid. It's elegant and simple, if not always particularly…

There are two things (hopefully) that every person will encounter in their life (among a million other things, but we’ll focus on these two for now).
What do these two things have in common, you ask? I’m glad you asked, let me tell you why.
Imagine yourself walking into a car dealership to buy a brand new Audi A6 sedan. You’re going to encounter 1 of 2 car salesman.
