The Fractured Sisterhood @Work

But while women have come a long way in removing workplace barriers, one of the last remaining obstacles is how they treat one another. Instead of helping to build one another’s careers, they sometimes derail them...

Jobster calling on desperate measures?

So the economy isn't doing very well, that's putting it lightly, and the 55 million Jobster had in funding is fading fast? What do you do now? Apparently you turn to interstitial ads and anything that will bring in cash.

Where do you draw the line? At this point… Continue

What makes me a smart recruiter?

Alot of it sounds familiar. For me, I'd have to say:

1. I make sure I learn from mistakes so I don't repeat them.
2. I try to make sure they understand my role.
3. I do my best to establish trust and set expectations.
4. I know when to shut up and how to ask the right questions.
5. I know when to walk away.

These can be said for candidates and hiring managers.

Work travel and work life balance

Now there's a conundrum. How does one make the two work together. I am writing this from a hotel room, after a day of interviewing and attending one of the most inspiring meetings I have been to in years. I thought I must have been out of words... obviously not.

How does one travel for work and still maintain the family life? Is it really possible to juggle? I tried.. but not sure if I succeeded.. I stepped out of that awesome meeting as it was time at home to sing bedtime songs, a… Continue

What Makes Me A Smart Recruiter

Ok, so I'm a little late to the 'Smart Recruiter' party, but I'll take a shot at this (at the risk of sounding pompous, of course). Here are the top 5 reasons I'm a 'Smart Recruiter':

1. Because I help Internal Recruiting Leaders with 'financial speak' when it comes to increasing their budgets and justifying an investment philosophy toward their critical/pivotal talent pools. This sounds cliche, but it isn't - I know of no other Executive Recruiter that helps their Clients get a… Continue

What Makes ME a SmartRecruiter?

This is part of what makes ME a SmartRecruiter:

1) I believe that what we are doing is very important work. People identify themselves by what they do for a living and what I do is help them along in their career. A smart recruiter helps the candidate find a good job AND the employers find a good employee. Never put a round peg in a square hole.

2) I believe that Networking is very important. It helps all of us to have resources, people we can turn to for advice or guidance or… Continue

Campus Recruiting is a Good Idea in Any Economy

There are some recruiters who think campus visits are a luxury rather than a necessity. John Flato would disagree. In his article for ERE, 5 Reasons to Maintain a Strong Campus Recruiting Program During This Economic Downturn, he explains why maintaining a campus presence is important, regardless of the economy.

Flato's list points out why smart… Continue

Recruiting and Hiring Practices of the Future

With the new year comes a new way of looking at how we manage our lives and our careers. In his article for ERE, What's Going to Be Different in 2009, Kevin Wheeler speculates on the kind of changes that will appear beginning this year.

What makes me a Smart Recruiter?

There are many things that contribute to me being a smart recruiter, but the top 5 have to be:

1) I do my homework - on both the candidate and the client side - do the references, read the blogs, myspaces, websites anything I can google : )

2) I ask questions and don't assume anyting - you don't know how many times people put things on their resumes but really have no idea what they are talking about!! Same goes for a client, sometimes they put down a qualification but… Continue

Facebooking- Personal VS. Professional information

Where do you draw the line? how do you decide which photo, information, etc is appropriate to be there for some of your contacts (specifically professional contacts) to see??

No- I am not talking about super inappropriate pictures or anything like that...It's just that when I started facebooking- it was more of a personal page just like myspace or friendster wherein most of the people you will have there are your friends and that is one great way to update everyone of what is going… Continue

What makes me a smart recruiter?

1. I'm tenacious... I don't let "no" get me down

2. I do what I say and set expectations appropriately on both ends

3. I network, network, network... and not just online. I keep up with old colleagues, other recruiters, business leaders in the local area. I do a lot of face to face meetings. People remember you more! The more people know ME, the less I have to find THEM. And then.. I use that network. I also help a lot of people that may not yield me anything in the short term. I have… Continue

I love my job, but...

As a Corporate Recruiter my job is to make sure that I assist in finding the best candidate for our open positions, simple right? It really, truly is – simple that is. But that doesn’t mean that little ol’ me isn’t going to do my absolute best to make it complicated. No doubt I pride myself on understanding my hiring manager’s needs, asking tough questions and pushing them just a bit harder than they would probably like, but the… Continue

I've joined the ranks of unemployed recruiters!

Laid off, RIFd, downsized, rightsized, made redundant, position eliminated. Those are all I can think of, but I am open to any other terms someone would like to suggest ;-)

I would be interested in discussing any opportunities for full cycle recruitment in the northern Chicago suburbs as well as virtual recruiting or sourcing opportunities, particulary in the technical arena. At this time I'm open to full time, part time (at least 25 hours/week) or contract.

Feel free to… Continue

What Makes Me A Smart Recruiter...

1. Keep in real: With my potential candidates, clients, leaders and peers. I don’t misrepresent my efforts, job descriptions, candidate qualifications or anything that will lead to a disappointment if not wholesomely true. When you keep everything real- everyone on the deal stays educated on the facts and can make decisions without distress.

2. Natural Curiosity: I try to explore one new tool or website a day. I usually exceed this attempt, but there are certainly days where… Continue

Innovation through Inclusion

If you need innovation (and I think you probably do), you need diversity.

For more and more organizations in more and more industries, creativity and innovation are rapidly becoming the best new opportunity for establishing competitive advantage. This is no big secret as there is a great deal of writing, talking, buzz-wording, best-practicing and shouting about innovation today. Innovation is also coming to be viewed as increasingly important to education, non-profit and… Continue
