Pay For Performance is here to stay for recruiting!

Pay for Performance is something everyone always strives to achieve.  Whether it’s buying a new car, being Theo Epstein (the General Manager of the Boston Red Sox) or placing an advertisement for your company, you are always seeking ultimate value you are receiving from the resources that you dedicate to a specific commodity.  The more value for each dollar you can earn, the better.  This is especially true in this economy when you are looking to recruit top talent to your…

It’s all mobile: Results from the 2011 mobile recruiting survey

Mobile is omnipresent – at times it seems as though more people are on their mobile devices that actually talking to each other. Butwhat role is mobile playing in recruitment?

This was the question I set out to answer a few months back. (Thanks again to my co-sponsor on this endeavor, AllTheTopBananas!). The survey, which was targeted at HR and recruiting professionals in the U.S.…

When Employers Are Confronted With Workplace Violence

While in some sectors there is a call to ease up on background checks, the obvious question that comes to mind is who bears the brunt of it if an employee who snaps out and commits to violence in the workplace turns  out to have a history as a convicted felon? Why the employer, of course.  The employer will incur the damages, the litigation and liability issues the public embarrassment and the knowledge that employees were harmed in the working environment.

When violence is committed…

Will Social Recruiting Dig the Job Board Plot Next to the "Help Wanted" Grave

I find this whole recruiting train of thought amusing...

With Linked In, Facebook, Twitter, and myriad other avenues of engagement - worrying about where the best site to place a job ad...well, er - it sounds like a discussion from a 100 years ago listening to two buggy whip salesmen chatting about which blacksmith to align themselves with...while Ford, Nash, Olds and…

Is It All About the Benjamins?

Over the years I have read numerous surveys regarding the reasons that job seekers use when looking for a job, considering a career change or deciding on a job offer. When job seekers are asked why they are looking for a new job or a career change or when asked what was their reason for leaving (RFL) their last few positions, the reasons most often sited are a lack of…

Candidates! Be basic with your email address

I had to write this little blog because I just got an email from someone looking for a position with my company.

There are a lot of tips and advise that I can give to job seekers. but this is a piece of advise that seems so basic that I feel like it should be well known. Unfortunately, many people don't do it.  The advise is....be basic with your email address.   Or maybe not basic, but try not to be so off the wall.

If you are applying for a position,…

Simply Profitable (TM)

Why do some companies achieve nonstop growth and perpetual profits while many others do not? The answer is the simple focus of consistently executing the key actions and behaviors that promote a sustainable business.

One important aspect of being Simply Profitable™ is that your sales function must persist to the 80th percentile and, when it does, your closure rate of business will substantially increase. So, what is the 80th percentile? It’s the fact that 80% of all business is…

Smarter Employees or Impatient Brats?

The adoption of the new social media platforms by many employees is of great concern to IT leadership across the country.  New technologies can be easily utilized by employees most usually at the expense of the enterprise security, but that is very often not spoken about.  I read continuously about the smarter employee, the better employee, etc… yet find little information discussing the enterprise effect of such adoption.  Social media though important does not offer the large benefit or…

Interesting Tool on LinkedIn

I just found an interesting tool on LinkedIn; Company Statistics.  It is currently listed as being in Beta and provides an overview of information such as the top companies folks worked for prior to working with the company and the top organizations folks went to when they left the company, the average number of years of work experience of employees at the company vs. employees at similar companies (“similar companies are based on the same industry and similar size”), and similar statistics…

Shouldn't your corporate culture inspire your employer brand--and vice versa?

Are practitioners of employer branding in this country too enamored of the market-centered metrics of packaged goods branding to see the strategic role that human capital branding can play in the talent environment of their organization? When you build an employer brand, rather than obsessing about market factors and what competitors for talent are promising potential recruits...why not focus first on the native culture of your workforce? Shouldn’t this be your organization's most authentic…

Why It’s Time To Replace Your Recruiting “Manager” With A “Coach”

*

*

What makes a great coach? RESULTS!!!

While we could list all the attributes such as knowledge of the sport, leadership skills, and so on, the answer is actually quite simple. I can explain Recruiting in five minutes, but it will take you five years to understand.

After 15 years of experience, I have to conclude that coaching is much more art than science. While a good coach is always trying to learn more, the only real measure of a coach is…

Who is (really) the client? Caution...not for the faint of heart.

Before I launched ultimatejobboard.com I spent nearly a decade in recruiting, most of which was running my own contingency firm. In my years recruiting I've been to a number of sales and training seminars and classes. I've learned a lot but no question one concept from one trainer stood out and defined not only my recruiting philosophy, but business philosophy in general...the concept is; who is really the client?

The story goes like this...Mr. Trainer's business was expanding and he… Continue

How To Tap The Hidden Job Market

Did you know there is a hidden job vacancy market out there? These are the great jobs that hardly ever get advertised (or the advertising is a formality as there is already a front runner for the role)! Would you like to be the front runner?? It really is simple, this is known as "word of mouth" marketing, where other people submit your application for you. These are the jobs where a current employee or confidant of the boss hiring says "Hey - I think I know…

Make the one you love say "I do"

Since next week is Valentine’s Day, we thought it only fitting to write about the relationship between two parties – and how to move it to the next level. Most of us have been there before – we’re ready to commit but the one we’re courting just isn’t quite so sure. It can be heartbreaking. You, the hiring manager, have finally found the ideal candidate – a match made in… Continue
