March 2012 Blog Posts (219)

I get so frustrated with "your reply must be approved" on blogs....

Nothing bugs me more than entering a comment only to find the blog is moderated and my comment must be approved.

Do you want conversation?  If so - conversation is the free flow of dialogue.  That means - you say something, I say something, you reply, I reply and so on.

If you moderate your blog here - it more or less says "I am here to tell you what I think" which is not the way a thriving community continues to grow.

Thank you.

Funny thing that Road Rage taught me.........

A few days ago there was an article posted on this blog about whether or not it's OK to burn bridges. I guess that's a matter of opinion and circumstance but if my severe Road Rage (Washington DC area traffic) has taught me anything of value, it would be "WHY BOTHER."

So that manager never called you back after the interview and your previous boss was a horror show. Do you think that by airing your experience publicly that no one else is going to show up for an interview with that…

What will LinkedIn become?

LinkedIn is a dream tool (for now).  Having the ability to view up to date resumes (or profiles), being automatically notified of job changes, being connected through contacts/groups, etc. is a recruiters Nirvana.  But like anything that works, you have to work it.  However, being a public company can often times cloud decisions making them based on quarterly numbers rather then core.  Where are they going and what will they look like in 12 months?

The Added Expense of Workplace Bullying

Bullying seems to be the new buzzword.  Be it in the schoolyard or on the job, there are increased outcries about one person trying to dominate another through intimidation.  Most of the time the intimidation employed is psychological.  But often enough it is physical as well.    It is nothing to minimize, but then by the reaction of some, it would appear bullying only recently appeared on the scene.   With the plethora of articles, seminars, workshops,  and panel discussions, bullying or…

How Media Draws You In.

Working in the media industry, it is important that I remain aware of it's ever evolving landscape and the thing that stands out the most is the speed with which social media can make an impact. Whether it's something with a '#' before it or a much 'liked' Facebook status, we're all switched on, all plugged in, all paying attention.

A recent example of this is the latest iPhone app doing the rounds. My Facebook home page became littered with people referring to their new…

Why Professional Job Recruiters Are So Effective

Any candidate in transition or working professional has most likely bumped into a recruiter at some point. Many executive recruiters often actively headhunt passive job candidates whom are currently employed. And if you are in the process of conducting an active job search, you have probably responded to an advertisement for a job opening placed on a jobs board by a recruiting firm. However, a well-thought-out, effective job search that covers all of the bases intentionally includes…

Special Delivery: Who Ordered the Spam?

I was silently hoping that someone had finally sprayed enough insecticide on the pests that continue to propagate terrible job search advice. Alas, plenty of evidence of their insidious and obnoxious existence still emerges regularly.

There are a number of sources in my local area that sponsor workshops, seminars and other events directed at job seekers. From what I can tell, the vast majority of the sponsors and presenters have literally zero relevant background to justify providing…

Tech Tuesday: Staying Connected

This post originally appeared on the SkillStorm blog:

Tele-Tattoo. The New Wave In Staying Connected?

How far would you go to never miss another call…far enough to get a tattoo? The mobile phone manufacturer Nokia thinks you might at least consider it. Recently the company filed a patent for a solution that would allow magnetic ink tattooed in your skin to interact with a specific electromagnetic field given off by their mobile phone. The result: you…

It’s hard enough for job seekers to find a job. And struggling with a poor candidate experience will just result in mounting frustration.  Some of these complaints from job seekers will likely sound all too familiar.

In response to a good friend having a difficult time with a job search......

As a Principal Recruiter with more than 17 years of experience in the industry, it never ceases to amaze me how many recruiters treat applicants poorly. Most amazing to me is how recruiters behave towards one another. I have always prided myself in open, honest and timely communication with applicants, whether or not they are chosen for a role within my organization. If we as a company are undecided and dragging our feet, I tell the applicants such and keep them updated on our progress. If…

What the Hunger Games taught me about the job search

The other night I saw The Hunger Games with my daughter and one of her friends. When we got into a discussion about the various scenes in the movie, we all agreed that Rue’s death was the saddest…oh, I hope I’m not giving away too much of the movie.

There’s another scene I would classify as more bloody and kick-you-in-the-gut than sad. It’s when the tributes…

Big news this week on how employers are using Facebook.  It is like your prospective employer wants to see your underwear. Most people keep their Facebook profiles private, available only to true friends, but employers want to peek before they hire.  In the past week, there have been several articles written about how employers are being intrusive into the Facebook…
