My phone is ringing off the hook. My email box is flooded. Every few minutes or so, my Twitter notification pops up with an update from @adagencylayoffs. I am reading Facebook status update after status update about another friend losing their job. Vendors hurting for business, willing to offer any sort of deal to just get
something going. Third party partners pulling out the big guns by saying, “Did we do something to personally offend you? If so, what can we do to make it up to…

Are we doing all we can as recruiters? It seems that when things heat up in the staffing business, recruiters tend to be more on their “A” game, so to speak. Now, there just aren’t as many positions to fill as in the past. With fewer positions to fill, recruiters may become discouraged and sometimes overlook the steps vital to filling open positions.

We had a really good week. There is a ton happening and I have that good kind of stress where you're just really scrambling to get everything done. Clients have come through with some really interesting job orders. Candidates are moving along in the interview process and the pipeline of deals is looking stronger than it has in a while. These are all really good things and billings are fine for the first 3 months of the year.
I don't trust it. Most clients have no jobs and no sign of…

Winston Churchill once said, “Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have.” An organization, be it a country or a company, is only as strong as the people who drive the process and agenda for that organization. In the modern business environment, Human capital is the driving force behind success and in many cases failure.
The modern global economy has brought down barriers and opened up the market place. Under the mounting competitive pressures, many managers lose…

Based on two noteworthy items:
#1 - how frequently it is discussed here
and
#2 - how ABSOLUTELY addicting it is
I started a Twitter account. Yes, I even downloaded a Twitter app to my Blackberry.
So if you're so inclined, feel free to add me: Art_Pitcher
Or is the correct syntax: @Art_Pitcher ?
Also, if you're on there and find it valuable, let me know and I'll add you too!
I dunno 'bout all this yet. A man has to chirp…

Having spent almost a year in my current in-house role I've started to reflect back on where I came from. I took a look at my previous agency experience and compared what I did there to my current responsibilities and realized that although accidental, the format of my last job prepared me very well for what I was walking into.
The setup was such that every recruiter had one skill set within which he or she was to become an expert. The thought was for each recruiter to become fluent…

8 tools to find semantic similarity between words
Semantic net
The big news this week has been Google announcing their use of semantics to enhance the performance of the search engine. This will not come as a surprise to computer scientists working in the language field (IR, NLP etc…). There are also already quite a few semantic search engines around like cognition for example. I think we were waiting for Google to take this step for a while and now it has it’s really…

People get so stressed about the cover letter.
- Do I send?
- How long should it be?
- What should I put in it?
- Do I put salary requirements in it?
Let's start with the first question. Carol from North Carolina said to me: "When sending in my resume for a job, I don't send a cover letter. It doesn't give me any advantage in getting the…

The important aspects to look at:
1) Which aspects of the recruiting process are important to you?
2) On a scale from 1 – 5, how important are these aspects for you?
3) How would you measure that the process is performing according to your needs, and how would you know that your expectations are not…

As a recruiter, how can you command a higher fee?
Well, here’s one idea that sounds almost too good to be true—you simply ask for it. Savvy recruiters know that at any given point in time, there are companies out there with staffing needs so urgent, they'll do whatever it takes to get the position filled.
Like stranded airline passengers who are sick and tired of hanging around the terminal, they're more than willing to open their wallets, just to get…
