EMIA Networking Sites - Short Term Gems?

Those that are avid users of networking sites liked Linked In/Viadeo/Plaxo in EMIA - good for you. How long will these great tools last? Are we going to see these tools decline due to over use and excessive contact requests making candidates shy away? This appears to happening to some extent in the US?

Wednesday Wisdom: Don't make me go there. Seriously.

Dear Claudia,

A recruiter in my office recently landed a VP search for a company I used to work for. I know a lot about this company’s dirty laundry, and the leadership is generally ruthless and unethical. I tried to warn the recruiter before he took the search, but he doesn’t seem to care about the background information. My real problem is that it’s now my job to generate candidates to fill this role. I absolutely don’t want to work on this search. Am I right to feel this way?…

The State of the Market...Why IT professionals hate recruiters

The State of the Job Market- Why IT professionals hate Recruiters?

In my career, I was a recruiter. I networked and called people from the Job boards. When I transitioned to IT recruiting, I was blown away by the open animosity toward me for merely calling them. I then felt I needed to prove my technical knowledge in order to gain respect or slip in that I went to college for IST. Only after… Continue

One quote sums up the challenges we face quite nicely…

“I really want to help my client, but I feel like I’m searching for a needle in a haystack. I don’t dare send any candidates unless I find an exact match to what they’ve given me. I don’t… Continue

Mass Career Customization - Deloitte's Cool New Retention Tool

I went to a networking event this week, sponsored by the FWA. While I’ve attended FWA events previously, this one was particularly interesting to me because one of my “best buddy-pals”, Sydney Firestone, Director in the Forensic & Dispute Services practice of Deloitte & Touche, was one of the speakers. Sydney and I met when we both went back to school “later in life” to complete the… Continue

Prize Dilemma

Wow, who would have picked it. I went to my CEO with an idea, and to my surprise he listened, thought it through and agreed to move ahead. I must have entered some parrallel universe or something. Now I have a problem.... I have to actually implement said idea, by tomorrow night and present at our company wide meeting on this.

Ok idea was (well stolen from Rob McIntosh, thanks Rob) to run a Film Festival, for people to make their own video's about our company, the winners get a prize… Continue

Size matters in China.

Well, it matters, but with the right technique you can make up for a lack of size in many cases if client is willing…

The prevailing market wisdom is that the best candidates will go to the big companies and the smaller (SMEs, start-ups, trading companies, privately held firms) companies are left with what is left. This is not always the case and it can make a huge difference in the long run for your firm to get the best people now.

We placed a candidate today in a… Continue

The DNA of engagement

At the local market this morning I rounded a corner and witnessed the most astounding sight: a young mother on the business end of a grocery trip, accompanied by three boys under the age of five.

It took a nanosecond to sum up the chaos: while mommy was speaking to a clerk a short distance away, the 4 year old was methodically loading up the basket with jars of jam. In the spirit of cooperation, his younger brother (about 2 and a half I think, seated in the basket and clearly… Continue
