"Vegetable Gardening and the Job Search"

Once again, I am awakened by a dream and inspired, and at 3:15 am I sit here writing this article to you. What woke me was a dream related to my vegetable garden…I know…weird huh? Well, once I woke, I started to think of the relationship between job seeking and gardening. Now, you may ask, how are the two related?

If you are keeping track of what’s happening in the garden, and you stay on top of the issues of soil preparation, seed or…

Looking For Honesty and Integrity in Dallas IT Consulting Companies

I was in IT for several years before being laid off a few years ago. I was laid off right before September 11, 2001 and was working on my MBA in eCommerce at the time. I found myself in a very difficult situation as many other people did during that time. Because I was working on my MBA and was almost finished, companies I interviewed with considered me 'over-qualified' for most positions I applied and interviewed for.

I stumbled into IT…

Pipelining for Great Candidates - How it May Affect Recruiter Jobs

When we speak with people who don’t work in the staffing industry regarding the number of candidates on the job market and the availability of candidates to place, they typically assume that since there are so many people unemployed, that we in the staffing industry should have plenty of candidates to represent to our clients.

Not exactly…they haven’t seen what recruiters and staffing professionals have seen - that there are lots of candidates on the market, but clients are being…

How to Conduct a Passive Search

It’s true; most employers prefer passive candidates. A passive candidate is a gainfully employed professional who is open to hearing about career opportunities and would actually accept a new job if it made sense to them and their family.

Employers believe that a person is employed because they are the top of crop. When I say employers I refer to specific managers who maintain this mindset. I don’t personally know of any managers who think this way, but I have come across…

5 P's of Blogging

Last week I presented to a group of Restaurant Human Resources Professionals as part of the People Report Summer Camp Symposium in Dallas, Texas. The event was hands down the best conference I have ever presented at or attended. I led a session titled, "Blogging for Dummies."

From Where I Sit...There Are a Lot of Empty Seats

I flew United for the first time in a decade last week. It was a lesson in customer as well as candidate experience I won't forget anytime soon.

The customer service people were very nice. When I stepped up before boarding and told them I normally fly Continental- had in fact booked my ticket through Continental but my mileage (50-100k per year for the last decade) and status weren't highlighted on the ticket as they should be and then asked whether 1st class had all…

Changing the way you interview!

Finding your next employee takes time and effort from you and your management team. You sort resumes, speak with unqualified candidates, coordinate schedules, organize in-person interviews, make travel arrangements, and the list goes on and on. All this adds time to the hiring process which negatively impacts productivity, consumes resources, and opens the door to potentially missing out on an exceptional hire.

In light…

Stand By Me

The last time I checked there were only 21,185,836 views of this video which should give you some idea of how "tuned in" I am!

The video is part of a series put together by Playing for Change and if you are one of the 21 million plus mentioned above, of course, you already know that.

But for those, like…

Barbeques, Sun Tans, and Career Networking?

In the last three months, more people have quit their jobs than been laid off, according to a recent AP article. Is this a sign of better economic times or an exhausted workforce that in light of recent layoffs have endured more stressful environments? Could it be that…

The Impact of the Social Graph on Recruiting

For far too long, marketers, advertisers, and recruiters have undervalued the way actual decisions are made. Witness the interrupt driven nature of product advertising and job postings. The assumption is that by placing information in front of customers or prospective candidates, we will automatically convince them to buy our products or apply for work at our organization.

Real World Decisions

In the real world, this is not how things works at all. Most…

Digital Technology and Recruitment Agencies – RIP or Rejuvenation?

Even before “To google” became a verb, digital technology formed the pervasive backdrop for economic activity. Nowadays, even the most savvy recruiters are challenged to keep pace with the new functionality and devices that are constantly appearing in the marketplace. However, many recruitment consultancies appear to be adopting a “business as normal” approach without recognition of the tide change that digital technology brings. Companies who continue on, without addressing or integrating new… Continue

How to Track Your Job Search Progress - Nayeem Chowdhury

I remember when I used to apply for jobs, I would think I was applying to company websites that were like black holes. When recruiters used to call me back, maybe after a month or two after an application, I would have no idea who it was and what it was for. Here is a job search tracking spreadsheet I created to allow me to track my progress and the same time follow up with the recruiters I worked with to increase my network, display my persistence, and can refer back and prepare for an…
