How Strong and Resilient are You?

Allow me to share with you a story about an email I received out of the blue from someone I have never met or done business with...but would one day certainly be open to meeting. We all receive copious amounts of email a day, alas much of it is spam or material that in our personal opinions may as well be spam. So, at the end of my days I tend to go through a major delete and purge mode of my inbox and…

Leveling the Field: Remaining Competitive in an Evolving Web Marketplace

Version changes. Upgrades. Migrations. The world of web is constantly evolving. Almost as quickly as my wardrobe in fall!

Case in point, some topics of interest:

• To HTML5 or not to HTML5?

• Is the web dead? Are applications taking over?

• Cross browser compatibility?

• Flash and iPhone? GASP

• The future of Flash?

One topic that is always mutually agreeable is the concept of keeping up with emerging trends and adding to your repertoire. You have… Continue

Phone Screening Tips to Expedite the Interviewing Process

Question by Recruiter:

I’ve narrowed down my list of job applicants, but am still feeling overwhelmed…What phone screening tips can you recommend to help me reduce the amount of face-to-face interviews for only the most qualified candidates?

Answer by Bayt.com’s Senior HR Consultant, Suha Mardelli Haroun

Arrange a time.

Arrange a set time for you and the candidate to talk, then keep it short, 15-30… Continue

Putting On Your Game Face

It's funny how many of us spend more time learning how to play a video game or to hit a 7-iron than we do on taking our job search or productivity to the next level.

When we play games we compete and often play with a passion and intensity that drive us to get better and better. When we play with our buddies we can stay up all night but when we have nothing to do we can fall asleep by…

Google’s messing with me!

I am normally used to reading about the fabulous new updates on Google’s Blog and how they added this or made better that for searching. But lately I am so fed up with Google making my search life miserable. Actually, sad, hurt and frustrated. I mean its one thing to deal with my 6 year old twins saying no to everything (6.5 to be precise, lest they spot mommy saying this on the big WWW) but now even Google? What’s up? I am in no mood to be sorry or…

I Did it! I really did it!

I really enjoyed the diversity of RecruitFest this year. It was different than years past, but good in its own right. One of the light bulb moments for me was the discussion around auto-notification of candidates directly from the ATS. Well, I am terrified of it. Afraid to even check the little box that kindly offers to send an email rejecting the candidate for me. Why? I should love that this system is offering to do my dirty work, but I don't. So I tell myself I will get in touch with each… Continue

Candidate Engagement: Small changes can go a long way!

Last week, I was able to attend RecruitFest. It was a great event with a lot of interesting topics and conversations but one that stood out was the session “The Candidate Bill of Rights” (video should be up soon at www.recruitfest.com) This session included the some great panelists from Gerry Crispin (…

Can you relate to the Class of 2014?

Warning: This content may spin you into a mid-life crisis...

As a person who still likes to think of herself as "young" in many senses - I am being forced to rethink my position. I came across this list of the "Mindset of the Class of 2014" (shared below)...

I feel a bit like I'm forced to move myself out of the "young" category - since I remember rotary phones and crank car windows!

How do you match up with the latest batch of college students you…

Closing the Interview Door – In Your Own Face

In a recent HR magazine called “Network” that is distributed through Alberta there was a story posted about an interview appointment gone wrong. I had to read the story about three times over before I could believe what I read. My question is, have candidates really degraded to this level of foolishness?

Story…

Get Involved, Get Experience

With today’s generation of new graduates and the emerging workforce there is one theme that is becoming more common: the idea of corporate social responsibility, or CSR. Without diving deep into the very concept of CSR, I’d like… Continue

Recruitfest 2010 'un'Summary

RecruiterGuy at Recruitfest 2010

Last week there was a resounding "boom!" in the space that is the overlap between social media, conferences and the recruiting industry. It came to us on the 8th and it called itself, "Recruitfest." And while it was billed to be the next in a series of 'unconferences,' I believe this wasn't the case. In fact, I believe that if this had been another event where everyone sat under a tree… Continue

7 tips for interviewing success

7 tips to interviewing success

So a friend of mine asked a question on face book regarding a job interview that she is about to have. So as many job seekers she has some anxiety about the process, even though she has gone on many before there is still anxiety there. So I researched the topic a bit to makes sure that I would give her the best answers possible, and this is what I came up with to help her out:

1.…

Imagine all the People Living Life in Peace – Happy Birthday John Lennon

“What is the use of a house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?” – Henry David Thoreau

Saturday marked what would have been the 70th birthday celebration for one of the most inspirational poets of the 20th Century, John Lennon. A man who led a revolt, a revolt for peace around the world. Tolerance

and acceptance are sometimes the most simple yet most difficult things

to achieve. John believed in both. He united…

Interview Like Ya Been Somewhere

One of my best friends in High School was King Davis and his mom Shirley used to always tell us to “Act like ya been somewhere”. We never really understood what the she meant and it wouldn’t have made a difference, I mean, after all we were teenagers and we knew “EVERYTHING”. Well with age comes wisdom and, now that I’m old and busted, Shirley’s words…
