Social is more than status updates

I've been using social media to recruit for a long time but only recently came to the realization that it’s not just about updating my status with the hottest open positions. And I wondered why I wasn't getting any response!

If you are using sites like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook to get the word out about your open positions, there is so much more to it than posting jobs. To build an active following, you have to add other content to your posts. This could be highlighting…

The Secret of Selling (To Me)

Do you have a product you think I’d enjoy? Are you looking to make your next cold call to Martyn Basset Associates a little easier? Are you simply curious about how the mind of a prospect works? Well, this is your lucky day.

A few weeks ago I was on a demo call with a sales rep who’s only question seemed to be “...and how will this feature benefit you?” It’s a good question but I take enough sales calls and watch enough…

What roles and campaigns do video interviews work best for?

I’m regularly asked by recruiters and HR directors what type of roles video interviewing works best for. It’s a very pertinent question, for which there is no simple, right or wrong answer. It depends on a number of factors such as the seniority of role you’re recruiting for, or the size of your organisation.

The first thing to say is, you shouldn’t be thinking of video interviewing replacing face-to-face interviews. Instead, video interviews provide a great way to filter large…

Boost Your Employer Brand with Your Referral Program

Providing your employees with social tools to make job referrals can give your company’s employer brand an incredible boost. Title Search can be a waste!!

Title Search can be a waste!!

So a lot of sourcers still like to search by title. I mean the full title as listed on their job descriptions (JD). The only problem with this is there are a lot of different titles that can be used for the same job. For example you need a developer. You JD say Sr. Developer. That’s great but I have…

Evidentiary Interviews vs. Behavioral Interviews

While behavioral interviewing has some benefits, it falls short as it does not completely assess all of the behaviors necessary for success, only those you have time to review in an interview. Scott shares his latest invention in interviewing, the evidentiary interview, a more thorough way to assess talent.…

New State E-Verify Laws Recruiters Should Watch for in 2013

If you have never had to E-Verify a contractor before, you may have to start in the New Year.

E-Verify is an online federal system that checks information from Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) against records from the Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security to verify that they are eligible to work in the United States. The federal government only requires employers under federal contracts to use E-Verify, but many employers are…

Turds on my freshly washed windshield and similar annoyances

One of my contacts shared this vent with me. Thought it pretty much sums up some of the lazy, sloppy, clueless types that somehow found their way into the recruiting realm.

I honestly have a ton of recruiters that contact me, the majority are very bad at their job and I would never work with them but this specific recruiter keeps sending me positions where I do not fulfill what is identified in the job description and/or requirements, so after being nice on about…

The other side of the desk...

I've been a Corporate Recruiter for many years, I know how to recruit and source. I'm seeking a new assignment right now and no this is not a plea for an interview.

Where are the REAL recruiters??? I receive at least 3-4 calls/emails from "recruiters", don't get me wrong I more than understand that they need to fill a job but LOOK at my resume. I am not an IT Director, Taleo IT Analyst or an Accountant!

I had one person call me and I had to explain to him , that I wasn't a…

What it Takes to be a Waiter or Waitress in 2012

Becoming a waiter or waitress is 2012 is not exactly what it was 50, or even 20, years ago. Restaurants today have more demanding customers, making waiting tables a more demanding job as well. As the economic downturn forces many people to find alternative forms of employment, restaurants can also be more selective with their applicants.

Waiters and waitress sometimes…

How Do You Know If SEO Is The Right Field for You?

As a recent graduate myself, I know that it can be difficult to know what you want to do while you’re still in school. I graduated with a degree in English education, and so I prepared myself to teach high school kids about Shakespeare and wear heels everyday so that everyone knew I wasn’t a student. I just stumbled upon SEO and realized how much I loved it, but this wasn’t…

Sorry, need to vent.

Let me preface this with I have written a few blogs on here about why I both love and hate recruiting, as well as some good advice that has been on LinkedIn before. However, I had a bad couple of orders recently, more than likely due to the time of year, and just need to vent. I literally look like the guy pictured above right now.

Wow, I get frustrated sometimes. It isn't with my candidates as much, my office, or my…

Is ‘ROI of employee costs’ a new theory of measuring right investment vs returns?

Success or failure of a business directly correlates to its employees' performance. Employees often are termed as the biggest asset of any company. So the highly engaged teams have proven to deliver the best results as per company's desire. This calls for an inevitable spotlight for Employers to make the right investment in talent acquisition and retention. But for many companies, employees end up being the largest expense or if we can say investment.

Calculating ROI of employee costs…

RECOVERING OUR BETTER SELVES

The recent devastation from Sandy has brought a range of emotions from heartbreak and rage to deeds of heroism and extraordinary acts of kindness. As one of the most fortunate on the East Coast, my life went on relatively untouched by the storm; however I gained a great deal from observation.

What I saw amid the ruins were communities of people stripped of all non-essentials (and in many cases - essentials).  In these darkened days what has came to light is that we have…
