Why a company chooses CONTRACT resource vs. PERMANENT employee?

I guess this is more of a question that I hope to get responses to...rather than a blog post.
I'm looking to compile various reasons a hiring manager or company would prefer to hire a contractor vs. a permanent employee.

Reasons OTHER than budgets and money. I understand the financial benefits...but lets talk about the OTHER reasons out there that managers hire contract resources for long-term positions.

Compassion for Your Unemployed Candidates

You're a decent person, and you care about others. So how do you deal with the growing number of job-seekers who show up at your door?

With kindness and grace, I hope. You may not be able to find everyone a position—which is true even in the best of times—but at the very least, you can show them respect and offer some professional guidance.

I remember my first recession as a recruiter, and the impression it made. The same candidates who wouldn't take my calls a year… Continue

In Defense of Teasing

Today teasing has been all but banished from the lives of many children. In recent years, high-profile school shootings and teenage suicides have inspired a wave of “zero tolerance” movements in our schools. Accused teasers are now made to utter their teases in front of the class, under the stern eye of teachers. Children are given detention for sarcastic comments on the… Continue

Are you an expert or a beginner?

From Our Time To Act:

I may be a bit odd. It is actually quite likely. But one thing that has always seemed strange to me is our level of deference to “experts.” I understand that experts become known as such for a reason and I appreciate the value of advanced educations, years of experience and unique insight. While certainly valuable, I believe that the significance of expertise is greatly over-rated. Experts still make… Continue

for the recruiter---Are skills truly transferable?

In this economy. Does it make sense for a recruiter to consider --Transferable skills????

It is part of my role to influence hiring managers to think out of the box. Many times, that means educating those hiring managers how to read a resume, what questions help uncover hidden talents, and Identifying potential vs. experience in an applicant. This prompted me to inquire to all of you----Are hard skills really transferable? I know that we all need leaders, and that is a skill that is… Continue

I'm just a girl who can't say no

Dear Claudia,

I work for a company that is obsessed with customer satisfaction, which is a good thing – right? I’m not so sure. The way it works in Recruiting is that the Hiring Manager is always right, which means that I can’t ever say no. Want a purple squirrel? Sure, no problem. Want to see 10 more resumes when you already have 5 great candidates ? Absolutely, I’ll get right on that. Want to do things your way, even if it’s backwards and stupid? Ok, great! The tail is wagging…

Was Your Candidate Truly Laid-Off, or Just Plain FIRED?

As a recruiter I do have a great deal of sympathy for the droves of professionals being caught up in the current nationwide trend of mass layoffs. As someone who has been laid off from a job once before, I also have empathy for anyone who finds themselves caught up in a layoff situation.

However, no matter how much downsizing is happening in the market, I still proceed cautiously with a candidate who states that he or she has been laid off. . . . I can't help it, but the little "red… Continue

Why aren’t there female medical sales managers?

This question was posted on my LinkedIn page, along with these comments:

Person with question says:

My company is a perfect example of a large scale device organization with few women. Only 1 woman in an executive position and none in upper management. I have spoken with some women who say they were discouraged from pursuing management positions and have been passed over, for less qualified men.

My conclusion/response:

1. Fewer women in the sciences (narrows the… Continue

Ever been to West Virginia?

If you are reading this, the answer to my question in most likely "no". And for this fact, I am writing this blog. West by God Virginia is known for its "small town" appeal. Down home ethics and friendly neighbors make up the majority of our state. But where does this leave us in today's ever growing technology? And where does this leave me with my profession? I could easily move away as the thousands of others have, but then who would iniciate the CHANGE? Not to change the image of our state,… Continue

Thanks for everything, we're laying you off

So here's the deal: There are a lot of people facing lay offs these days, and as of last Wednesday, I am in the same unfortunate boat, which for a lot of us has a hole in it and is already filled with a lot of water, especially during the holidays. I thought, well if this is going to happen, I may as well share the experience on my blog since there are a lot of emotions involved, and it may be helpful for some of you out there.

So I will be posting daily logs on the following things,… Continue
