I met Johnny Campbell at the Radical Planet UnConference in Sept 2011 in Toronto. He wasn't scheduled to be a track leader but he was definitely one of the stars of the show.

Johnny used to be a…

When did getting a lot of applicants become a problem?

“We are getting too many applicants as it is”.  This is a phrase I’m hearing more and more from recruitment marketing organizations. Organizations feel this way for a few reasons:

1. They feel their recruiters are swamped as it is and additional screening would just add to the work pile.

2. They are currently hiring candidates that are good or acceptable for…

Candidate skill-set? Better yet, ask about their pet.

We can see what the resume says. But who is this person really? Is he or she a dog or cat person? Are they more like their German Shephard or their Tabby?

Don’t scoff. For all you extremely talented recruiters out their schooled in the latest behavioral role playing or SWOT-style interviewing techniques, are you really delving into this candidate’s hidden psyche from a fresh angle?

According to…

Another year is drawing to a close, the Coca-Cola adverts are back on TV and our thoughts turn to the excitement of the Christmas Party. Whether you are a 600 strong army hiring out a huge venue or a small gathering in a restaurant, there is a shared objective. How To Make Video Job Descriptions (and why you should be producing your own)

How to make video job descriptions (and why you should be producing your own) is the topic when Jim Stroud interviews Will Staney of VMware and investigates how they are successfully using video job descriptions to recruit active and passive candidates online. If you are not using video job descriptions in your recruitment strategy, no doubt you will consider it after this episode of The Jim Stroud Show. Why You Must Start Using Google-Plus for Sourcing and Recruiting

If you are waiting to start using Google-Plus for sourcing and recruiting, you will soon find yourself falling behind your  competition. Google-plus is still smaller than major social networks but its size doesn’t matter that much. It is also a moving target in terms of its functionality, but that makes it even more interesting!

Here are just a few tips.

Identifying/Cross-Referencing Prospects. If you know someone’s…

How to See a Shining Candidate Through a Lousy Resume

I’m not prone to feel sorry for people who don’t put together a good resume and complain about not finding a job, just like I don’t feel sorry for recruiters who complain about bad applicant tracking software but who never took the time research such a crucial purchase.

But then again, I can’t tell you the…

Not that I'm suprised or anything...you're not alone.

A week or two ago I wrote two similar blog posts about analytics. BY FAR, these are the most important tools for measuring your business; thus determining strong/weak points and building from there.  Not surprisingly, and not that I'm offended, two commented on one and said they do them but didn't offer any details when asked and the other had no comments at all, even though it was featured.

Perhaps because no one really does them, understands them or perhaps are afraid of the…

Tech Tuesdays: News you may have missed.

The coolest thing I saw this week

There is more in you than you think

Two weeks ago I took my eldest son to the 2012 Year 7 Orientation Day at his new secondary school. All the kids and parents were milling around before the event started. There was an excited buzz in the air as students from many different primary schools checked out their future school-mates.

As I was waiting for the formalities to start, I was looking around the hall and noticed the school motto plastered across the wall: There is more in…

When Unemployment Hits Too Close To Home

My mother is on Facebook. I’ve been mildly amused by this until last week when that’s how I found out my mom lost her job. That’s right, my mom - who lives a mile away, who I see twice a week and talk to on the phone almost every day, told Facebook she got laid off before her recruiter daughter. My jaw dropped. My eyes watered. I immediately grabbed my phone and ran down the hall to call her. After two tries she finally picked up, in tears. My brother, 12 years younger…

SF Bay, NYC, and Boston: Top 25 locations for MBA jobs

MBA hiring is up across the board over the past year. We saw a 103% increase in MBA-required and MBA-preferred jobs in the U.S. alone. But it's not necessarily where you'd think.

There are still plenty of MBA jobs in and around the San Francisco Bay, New York City, Boston, Seattle, and Chicago. But MBA hiring in the Washington D.C. metro area, Virginia, Ohio, and Dallas metro area are all up over 100% compared to last…

To all Recruiters!

Being a recruiter is not easy. It can be frustrating but also really rewarding all at the same time. We are human beings and can make mistakes but please DO NOT tell a candidate to **** off. If you need to vent or need a break from work then take a vacation but you should never blow up on a candidate and then accidentally email 4,000 people.

Some recruiter just suck and you can read more about…

All plugs are not the same, are they?

I've been a member of RBC for years now, entered as a recruiter (and still do some for select clients) and am now an executive director for a job board.  I've found this community to be one of the best on the net for straightforward, no holds barred commentary with the belief that all is designed to assist each other and help grow our businesses.

So I have a question; if you have a business that can help someone who posted a blog about a problem, situation or concern…
