This isn't the first time that the subject of closure has come up on this blog. In a previous post entitled
Handling Non-acceptance, we told candidates not to focus on the things that they cannot change. Sometimes you will not know why you were not chosen for a…

Recruiters know how to use the phone since they spend so much time calling clients and candidates yet many are ineffective in their ability to set appointments or present candidates. I still hear recruiters telling me all the time about how they submitted a candidate via email vs doing a call-and-present. Technology is a great asset to us but we need to get off email and do more F2F, especially in this market, and the best way to get there is to improve your phone skills.
Here are…

I'm not exactly a newbie to RecruitingBlogs, rather I've been a passive “lurker” for some time. Thanks to some of the more regular contributors on the site and their almost startling openness, something has awoken in me that wants to get more involved, to let my voice be heard. I don't imagine I'm the only one who has wondered just how to go about "putting themselves out there" and what it truly means to do so. I’m very glad to have a forum such as this to learn so much from.
So in…

Recruiting is a highly competitive sport. All external recruiters reach for the top, hoping to become finally recognized as a Gold Recruiter.
Recruiting is probably not much of a team sport, based on my observations from a corporate HR desk. Perhaps it is a function of the general reward system, with commissions linked to placement. Perform well and you get paid well.
The competition suggests there are a lot of recruiters. Entry levels are relatively low. This is evident…

This is interesting. Bill Vick interviewed a guy named Jordan Rayboy. He is a top biller accoprding to Bill and what I found most interesting is that 7 years ago when Jordan got into the business, he did great his first year and used no scripts. Seven years later, he is still doing great and he uses scripts for everything. I am a huge beleiver in scripts. Use them, they work, you are not above them.

Recruiting strategies may flex and change with economic conditions and in reaction to competitors in the market. But there are certain best practices that are a constant benefit to every organization that adheres to them, whether the economy is up or down. Recruiting excellence has a direct, and positive, impact on the bottom line. Increasing revenue per employee and saving turnover costs are two important benefits. Here are six recruiting best practices that will make a measureable difference…

If you are a recruiter, and even if you are a star recruiter, make sure that you dont do the below mentioned mistakes as part of your recruitment process. They are criminal and not excusable. Just because your time to fill and cost to fill metrics are good does not mean that you can get away messing up with the process and system.
1. Not entering the data into the Applicant Tracking System.
Lot of so called star recruiters hide behind the excuse that data entry is too tedious…

I write a lot from the Recruiter point of view, but I had one of those weeks, which changed my mindset for a while.
I've had to make a number of calls to unsuccessful candidates. As a job to do... that sucks.. but you know what?.. I'm sure it doesn't suck as much as taking the call.
Going for a job is a brave thing to do. You're putting yourself out there to be judged by others. Baring your soul, putting your future in someone else's hands to decide on. Like those people…

When I was a little kid, I dreamed of climbing the corporate ladder in my pinstripe suit and stiletto heels. I wanted nothing more than to be toughest, no nonsense attorney in a top law firm and live in a high rise apartment in Manhattan with my CEO husband and our glamorous life of jet setting weekends to Europe and dinner parties with the other fabulous people.
Well, at least that is who I wanted to play on TV. You see,…

Is common courtesy essential in the interview process? Do manners matter? The obvious answer is yes. Yet recently, I have witnessed a number of candidates that seem to think otherwise. Despite the economic climate candidates are still no-showing interviews, blowing off client requested tests and not returning calls. I am left wondering….do candidates really think this is acceptable?
People don’t blow off doctor, hair, or even car maintenance appointments for fear that they will be…

If you’ve been reading much on this site or reading virtually any other job search advice, you know that networking is critical to landing a new job. However, most people only begin building a network once they are unemployed. Better late than never. Networking can be far more effective, though, if you have an extensive address book of professional contacts that you’ve been building over time.
Begin building your network as soon as you realize it’s value, but don’t stop once you get…

"We were not able to identify your contact e-mail address. Your login e-mail address will be used as your contact e-mail address instead. Please be aware that this contact e-mail address will be used to contact you."
The message above was sent to a prospective candidate from an applicant tracking system -not ours. This system is managing a fortune 500 company’s careers site. Yikes! It can hardly be debated that…

September 30th I attended MoMo Boston held at the Boston Harbor Hotel where there was the usual meet and greet of some of the finest minds in America but also a great panel discussion regarding mobile advertising, mobile platforms, the best types of phones, etc. Needless to say, out of a room of 200, there were probably 11 women. Oh well – it meant more white wine for me. And NO! I do not JUST go for the open bar – Jeez.
My reason for attending was compounded by the fact that one of…

He completely lost me at “sir”.
It was his first chance to make a lasting impression and he totally blew it.
Clearly stated in the job description was “accurate, detail oriented, excellent communicator…” and “please contact Heather Gardner direct for immediate consideration."
Had he taken the time to look me up, he would have known…. Oh "Bing" or "Google" me please!
It’s so easy to lose out on an…

I had an interesting conversation today with one of my clients. Over the last seven years I have been witness to Marks' setbacks and successes, his layoffs and his promotions. I've met his wife, his kids, and he has met my sons. Our relationship is truly of "trusted advisor" nature.
This past Friday he was laid off from a software firm that had difficulty securing an additional line of credit. At best, the firm has another 6-8 weeks before they…

Here’s what I told the guy in the interview, “Over a 4 and a half year period I reported to no less than 36 different managers. Most often my obligations were split between 4 managers at a time and each of them had completely different objectives for me to meet at regular intervals. At any given time they’d have me working on either support documentation or reviewing past work product while assimilating new information that would be relevant to my performance reviews about every 6 weeks or so.…
