This month Lance Armstrong's comeback to the Tour de France is big news in the world of sport.
For those of you unaware of Lance Armstrong, he's the only man in history to have won 7 Tour de France's, road cycling's holy grail.
Just in case this isn't impressive enough, he won them consecutively and also fought back from a life-threatening bout of testicular cancer a germ cell tumour that metastasised to his brain and lungs when he was in his mid…

News flash - these are challenging days! OK, that's sooo old news by now, but nonetheless it still garners headlines. As a profession that relies on a healthy job market, well....need I say more?
Working in a consultancy firm - our clients have always been important to us, but in times like these they are all the more so. I am reminded of that classic little ditty, "Make new friends but keep the old. One is silver and the other is gold". Not to say we think of our clients as merely…

Admittedly, I like to tell stories, and if I may say so, this is one of my strengths as a recruiter. Storytelling can be a powerful tool in the recruitment process.
If you are embarking on a search to find a new team member for your own company or on behalf of a client, one of the first things I recommend (if you haven’t yet done so) is to think about the company’s story. If the company is a startup, you won’t have a lot of history to fall back on, but you can still have a compelling…

I admit, I have a fear of commitment on so many things and an unwavering loyalty to certain things that I commit to.
Example #1 Commitment Fear – I am almost OCD when it comes to making decisions on no brainer things in my life (at work, no issues w/this – odd? yes) like flavor of ice cream (do I do vanilla, vanilla bean, french vanilla? AND YES there is a difference) where to go on vacation, etc. because I don’t want to commit to any one thing and always be questioning if the other option…

To meet today’s challenges, companies world-wide are searching for ways to do more with less. While many strategies offer streamlined processes and ways to add value, the biggest opportunities to meet this challenge lie within the talent themselves and are critical to future success:
• Finding the right talent
• Retaining your top performers
• Ensuring your best employees have the opportunity to thrive
Managing talent can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be. The…

This was a thought provoking question posted on LinkedIn. What do you think? here's my answer:
“I believe that many so called recruiters and job boards are capitalizing on the high numbers of people ACTIVELY seeking work in order to somehow make it through, themselves. For me, I'm not doing this because I think it dilutes a brand. People should never have to pay for a job. EVER. Job boards are for lazy agency recruiters who don't have time to actually research and source to find…

I had an interesting conversation today with one of my clients. Over the last seven years I have been witness to Marks setbacks and successes, his layoffs and his promotions. I've met his wife, his kids, and he has met my sons. I consider him a friend.
This past Friday he was laid off from a software firm that had difficulty securing an additional line of credit. At best, the firm has another 6-8 weeks before they close up shop. Mark called me…

Just over a year ago the buzz in the market was all about how much today is a buyer’s (candidate’s) market and how there were more jobs than there was talent to fill the openings. From about 2001 to the end of 2007 the economy was souring and the number of jobs being created was increasing at fast rates. It was a time when such statistics as "44 million Gen “X”ers in the workforce to replace 77 million retirees" and "11,000 people are reaching age 55 every day" were staggering numbers that…

There are only two ways to generate new business and I'm not talking about placing an ad on a website or doing some other kind of marketing. To drive business development and in recruiting talk that means getting new signed fee agreements or job orders, you either have to reach a hiring manager by phone or get out into the field and meet with them face to face.
The worst thing that can happen to an account manager is to not be out meeting with prospects and for a recruiter to not be…

In our business we are constantly putting together plans; sales plans, call plans, recruiting plans, marketing plans. Recently we initiated a huge marketing campaign complete with timelines, brochures and touch points. Now all we required was a list from our sales team of their top 20 prospects. Easy enough, the lists are compiled and released to marketing!
But one questions jumped out to me; “Do our top prospects know that they are our top prospect? Campaigns are great, they get the…

“You want to play house you got to have a job. You want to play nice house, very sweet house, you got to have a job you don’t like.” (John Givings – Revolutionary Road)
I agree, on the surface it is not the most likely of movies that one could relate to Recruiting but I loved the movie Revolutionary Road – I found it to be an insightful and intriguing look at the human psyche. I saw it last night for the first time and will likely watch it again tonight. If you happen to be…

After a year of non-stop bad news it is good to see little shards of light emerge from the darkness. The recent European Chamber Business Confidence Survey 2009, done in conjunction with Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, produces the
necessary illumination.
The confidence booster is to be found in the fact that 37% of the 300 European companies surveyed said that China is…

A Worthwhile Investment.
More and more HR recruiters are using video technology to solve the challenge of nurse vacancies. According to a Wharton School of Business National Research survey, there is a 51% greater understanding of any subject presented through video. The survey also states that prospects are 72% more likely to purchase a product or service when video is used. This translates directly to job candidates' positive response when introduced to the facility through a…

Anyone that has spent time researching different applicant tracking systems (ATS) has no doubt found numerous recommendations and opinions online. Many folks start their research by seeking insight from colleagues on sites such as
ERE.net or
RecruitingBlogs.com, while others turn to sites that offer an ATS directory.
When it comes to directories, I have a preference for…

In my experience in helping to set up the recruiting at local universities in my previous job and then working on doing the same for my current organization, I thought it extremely important to share some insights on this. I have been doing this for 4 years, and it is amazing how some companies do this right and some just don't get it. I was answering a question on LinkedIn that prompted this article, so as promised to those who read that response, here is a much more detailed version on…

Many people switch career paths between contract and permanent opportunities and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Everyone has different motivations for this move from opportunity to work environment to the lifestyle associated with contracting. I would like to discuss candidates who have been a long time contractor who are interested in permanent opportunities.
This is a trend I have seen more commonly as of late. Most candidates are alluding to the recent economic…

Golf scores, gas bills, Dr Evil's sidekicks...bigger isn't always better. Unless you work in recruitment, that is.
Take a closer look at any rec-to-rec's books or website, and among the straightforward consultancy and managerial roles, you will more than likely find a number of stealthily exaggerated opportunities. 'Worldwide Operations Director' may seem like a prestigious position, but why does it only require six months' branch managing experience? If you Google the employer…

I've spoken before about that success of an HR person, or a Recruitment professional in the corporate world is akin to an umpire in a sporting event. If you don't notice them, then they are doing something right.
However, as some of my English friends say.. "Bollocks to that"
In the Recruitment world, Agency or Internal, it is a challenge to get that promotion, unless of course you are the last person standing in an agency! I know many people who now run 200+ people…

Some days there is nothing like waking up, stretching out, watching your dogs cuddled nicely on the bed, your lap top open and ready to conquer the world when you stop and wonder, why on earth would anyone want to drive into the office today? One of the benefits of owning your own business is that you can define your work life and your work place. With the age of Twitter and Facebook allows you to be everywhere and anywhere and “work” can take on a whole new meaning.
With the price…

For the short term, I believe yes. It creates a forum for people to connect, and find new candidates in mass form. However, the great thing about Recruiters is that we take all the information in, whittle it down and create a nice tight package wrapped in the form of a great candidate. This is what we do.
Think about it – you post on Twitter that you’re looking for an Art Director. It gets retweeted time and time again until your inbox is overflowing and you don’t…
