Because the market is loaded with high unemployment, hiring managers are approaching candidates directly to circumvent paying fees to recruiters. Corporate recruiters are therefore competing with the very professionals they’re assigned to support. Agencies, sensing a schism and a possible opportunity to snap up a quick albeit reduced fee, are vying to squeeze a toe in the door with the hiring manager and pitching the line, “I can do it better for less and without politics.”

Recruiters know how to use the phone since they spend so much time calling clients and candidates yet many are ineffective in their ability to set appointments or present candidates. I still hear recruiters telling me all the time about how they submitted a candidate via email vs doing a call-and-present. Technology is a great asset to us but we need to get off email and do more F2F, especially in this market, and the best way to get there is to improve your phone skills.

Recruiting is a highly competitive sport. All external recruiters reach for the top, hoping to become finally recognized as a Gold Recruiter.

This is interesting. Bill Vick interviewed a guy named Jordan Rayboy. He is a top biller accoprding to Bill and what I found most interesting is that 7 years ago when Jordan got into the business, he did great his first year and used no scripts. Seven years later, he is still doing great and he uses scripts for everything. I am a huge beleiver in scripts. Use them, they work, you are not above them.

If you are a recruiter, and even if you are a star recruiter, make sure that you dont do the below mentioned mistakes as part of your recruitment process. They are criminal and not excusable. I write a lot from the Recruiter point of view, but I had one of those weeks, which changed my mindset for a while.
I've had to make a number of calls to unsuccessful candidates. As a job to do... that sucks.. but you know what?.. I'm sure it doesn't suck as much as taking the call.

Is common courtesy essential in the interview process? Do manners matter? The obvious answer is yes. Yet recently, I have witnessed a number of candidates that seem to think otherwise. Despite the economic climate candidates are still no-showing interviews, blowing off client requested tests and not returning calls. September 30th I attended MoMo Boston held at the Boston Harbor Hotel where there was the usual meet and greet of some of the finest minds in America but also a great panel discussion regarding mobile advertising, mobile platforms, the best types of phones, etc. Needless to say, out of a room of 200, there were probably 11 women.
