ADA Retasked - Finally

I'm biased - with family members offering recruiters a range of disabilities, I used to cringe when I was asked to help them find new jobs. Recently the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 addressed many of the original law's shortcomings as well as Supreme Court rulings that whittled away the intent of the law.

The law will make it easier for workers to prove discrimination; it explicitly relaxes several stringent… Continue

Lehman Loses...We Lose

Lehman is already battling to avoid “job abandonment,” in which workers simply stop showing up even though they have not been formally laid off.

Some of that was clearly happening on Monday as some of Lehman’s trading floors were only about two-thirds full. A rush of résumé-writing signaled the melancholy of an institution in its final days.

Many employees toyed with their résumés in full view of colleagues. Others perused job-listing Web sites — Wharton’s…

Law 3 - Conceal your Intentions (the Zen of Recruiting)

"Keep people off-balance and in the dark by never revealing the purpose behind your actions. If they have no clue what you are up to, they cannot prepare a defense. Guide them far enough down the wrong path, envelope them in enough smoke, and by the time they realize your intentions, it will be too late."

Ah, the Zen of Recruiting or better known as recruiting without recruiting. Or if you prefer, conceal your intentions...

Which is "worse" - concealing your… Continue

Writing an Effective/Compelling Online Help Wanted Ad

The most common mistake that Employers make when posting a job ad online is forgetting the medium. A big advantage of online job boards is that they allow unlimited ad text in most cases. In other words, you'll pay the same $475 on Monster.com for a 200 word ad as you would for a 2000 word ad. That is not to say that you need to go hog wild on content because it's free (after all you want the job seeker to actually read what you have posted). It is to say, however, that there are some key… Continue

The Big, Bad and ugly: Who stole my candidate, and Hey I had her first...How to avoid candidate competition and Share like the big kids

Few people talk about it out loud, but it happens, we know it, Agencies know it, and here is a tip on how to avoid it.

Seems simple enough. You spend hours trying to get people interested, they apply and then 4 other corporate recruiters tag them. By the Way these recruiters are all working on your team.

How about this one. You speak with a candidate, get her jazzed about a leader position in a niche area of development, and bam....They have an interview tomorrow with… Continue

Save Recruitment Dollars with increasing your Candidate's Experiences

I have to make a confession. I often get so busy with my reqs, my candidates, and my interviews, that things I learned early on in recruitment and HR have slipped. Last week I took a breath and tried to put a framework together so that I could mentor others around my success in candidate experience and relationship building. I knew I was strong in a couple of areas, but I had never connected my enjoyment of building relationships and creating an experience for all my stakeholder, with the Cost… Continue

Layoffs at Siemens and Abbott Labs (again) ...

News from the Wall Street Journal Health Blog: Abbott Laboratories recently announced plans to close a manufacturing plant in California and cut 1000 jobs. Many major companies (Merck, Wyeth, Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Johnson & Johnson, and Amgen) have also announced job cuts in recent months. Siemens, in fact, announced in June plans to lay off 17,000 workers worldwide, which could be a sign of the times, according to Cliff Mintz at BioJob Blog.… Continue

Your Resume Should Read as a Perfect Match for Your Next Job

So, you are trying to write your own resume, and you are focusing on trying to highlight all of the things that you've done in the past? STOP!

Your resume isn't ABOUT your past - it's about your future! Of course, you need to rely on what you have done to convince your next employer of what you can do for him or her, but remember: Your resume needs to read as the perfect match for your next job. Quick Tip on Self-image

In your own mind, how do you see yourself and what it is you are doing? Do you view yourself as a true professional with an important message (offer, idea, etc.) that your prospective audience will want to know about?

It is highly likely that how you see yourself in your own mind, your self-image, will be communicated in one form or another to those you encounter.
