The 10 commandments of being a recruiter… all in one place…

So writing these types of top 10 things can be more challenging than I thought.   I will ease off doing another for a while – the little but often style takes a bit more planning than I would like.  What I do hope is that these bite size pieces have reminded you that I am here.  I have more to publish and will finally following up with a blogmeet – details…

Free Messages to LinkedIn Group Members No More...

(starting Jan 13, 2014)

To clarify, my source is a phone call with a LI rep yesterday (which happened for a different reason - namely - my LIR account was charging to send InMails to group members back in November (which shouldn't have happened back then) - this is a long trace following up...it almost doesn't matter anymore but I would love the support to get better.

The rep said that:

1) InMails in LIR to group members are now becoming paid - starting Jan 13. He said…

Why Your Talent Community Should Be More Than Just a List

Talent communities have reached a level of market maturity such that most companies no longer need to be sold on the idea. In fact, most of the employers I speak with believe they need (or already have) an accumulation of online social…

Dirty Old Snowmen

"I can count to ten. One, two, three, four, five, nine, six, eight... Well, I can count to five." — Frosty

Baby, it’s cold outside. No doubt, just about every part of the U.S. is feeling the bitterest of winter chills to kick off 2014. It’s been so cold, even the polar bears said, ‘…

3 Ways Wearable Devices Will Impact HR and Recruiting

Wearable devices are taking the world by storm. I caught the craze over the summer and purchased a pair of Google Glass for the team. We have probably utilized the device for no more than 40 hours total. It is not that it is not cool, its just not meaningful at the moment. And people give you that weird dumbfounded look when you have the on in public.

We…

HR and the Holidays: The “Time Off” Issue

It’s the holidays, and time off requests are rolling in like tins of unwanted baked goods. There are football games, family gatherings, it’s cold and flu season, there are a thousand extra errands to run, and oh yeah…the holidays themselves. This time of year can present a big problem in the world of…

Gratitude Gone Wrong

'Tis the season to show your team gratitude! There is a ridiculous amount of value in showing value, but we just don’t seem to do it enough. There are countless ways to let your team know that you see their hard work and appreciate it, but I bet you…

Dave Fecak, IT Recruiter

We had a good show today featuring Dave Fecak, an IT recruiter in Philadelphia who has a peppy way of speaking that is easy to listen to.

Most of the discussion was about about Dave's flat fee. Jerry didn't like that idea. We should have him back to ask him other questions.…

Recruiters: Own The Silence In Your Conversations

This morning I relished in a few moments of  that sweet silence that those of you who are parents will relate to. It’s that time before the children are awake when I can sip my coffee and consider my agenda. Sometimes I do some non-essential reading. Before I was a parent, it was the time in the morning when I arrived before the…

Postcards from the Edge: The Dark Side of Global Recruiting

Featured Guest Post by Gerry Crispin

The hiring process has no minimum acceptable (or unacceptable) standard of practice. Anything goes and many recruiters prefer it that way. Perhaps intuitively we know that people who think of themselves as recruiters (or enjoy being seen as successful recruiters by others), are highly individualistic and, if occasionally…

Don’t Tolerate Corporate Victimhood

One of my dearest friends shared a conversation she’d had with her daughter, Molly. Molly was attempting to Bellyache, Moan, and Whine about her current circumstances (I often refer to this as recklessly driving a BMW). Being the ever confident and highly competent mom, she did not allow Molly to pull her down into the clutches of a victim spiral. Instead, she…

HR and the Holidays: It’s Time to Start Thinking About Your New Year’s Resolutions

It’s that time of year, when we reflect upon the ways we want to improve ourselves. Gym memberships will soar and potato chips sales will momentarily plummet. Personal resolutions seem to be easier to define, but in order to continue to grow…

The Ticket Scalper Version of Direct Talent Sourcing

When accepting those rapidly accumulating random LinkedIn connection invitations, I generally also scroll down to peruse my timeline. In doing so, I often notice plenty of job opportunities being posted. Some of these are blasted out by automation tools and others are manually added as a person's LI status update.

Either way, I selectively…

If This Then That

As I watched the news the past couple of days, the newest hot debate is over extending unemployment benefits. The previous extension has expired, and the politicians - as always - are looking for a "winning" argument to score political points for the next election. It seems like the easiest thing to do for a politician is go around saying that the pursuit of happiness includes a free…

LinkedIn: Top 3 Trends Impacting Recruiting in 2014

If there’s one recruiting trend you can count on in 2014, its that LinkedIn will continue its dominance – and ubiquity – within the talent acquisition conversation. With over 90% of recruiters reporting to using the “professional network” for sourcing and screening candidates in 2013, LinkedIn enjoys a market penetration few competitors can match, as well as the unique…

Recruiting with Creative Content

We aren’t the first to link recruiting to marketing. There are a lot of parallels, and using creative content to attract the right audience is a big one. Content marketing has become huge in the last decade. No matter who you’re trying to reach, bite-sized, visually appealing content is…

HR and the Holidays: Showing Your Team Gratitude

We all know what Thanksgiving is about…food. Just kidding, it’s about being grateful andshowingthat gratitude. Hopefully that spirit lasts longer than the leftovers and you’re returning to the office with thanks. This time of year we are all made aware that we need to show those around us that we value them. As a family member or best friend, that is pretty easy to do. It…
