The Dos and Don'ts of Interviewing

One of the advantages of working within the staffing world is that you get the ins and outs of the client side, as well as the job seeker side.  Here at Dawson, we know what a client is looking for, what the job seeker expects and we get the make the perfect match.  So, in so many words, we are “all knowing.”  Not to give ourselves a pat on the back, but we are a wealth of knowledge and I have decided we should share some of it.  The information I continuously plan on sharing could…

Candidate Control? Are You Serious?

Like many of us, I stumbled into recruiting (I was a golf professional teaching some of these “headhunters”). Two years later I was sitting at a desk, staring at a phone, terrified I had made the biggest mistake of my life. I worked for a large, successful company with a few of “those guys” in the environment. You know the ones I’m talking about – the Bobby Big Wheels and the Johnny Shooters who knew it all.

Bobby and Johnny would walk around the office doing the wink and the…

Take the Blame to Make a Name

A great business adage is “Give all the credit; take all the blame.” Very few leaders really embody this principle, because too many people hold on to the credit, and never want to be “blamed”. However, business leaders can gain a great deal of respect by stepping up and owning a problem. Most bosses really appreciate someone who thinks creatively and will volunteer to solve a…

Talent Acquisition... Seriously?

I just need to vent for a moment and tell you why I so dislike the title Talent Acquisition that many companies are slapping on their recruiting departments.

Maybe it’s just me, but ‘acquisition’ sounds a lot like a purchasing function. And perhaps this is symptomatic of the underlying challenge that these businesses have with recruitment. If you are looking to purchase some talent, you might put up some postings, clearly stating the skills and experience…

The blame game

Dear Hiring Manager

I was sorry to hear that John has left your business after only 2 months. However I am confused as to why you think this was my fault. My role was to provide you with a qualified shortlist of candidates based on the criteria you gave me. The thorough recruitment process I undertook meant that my shortlist was accurate and I was able to provide you with detailed feedback on each candidate. As well as the positives, I also advised you of any areas of concerns that I…
