Are you recruiting with Passion or Pizzaz? Why the Mission Matters...

If the team with the best talent wins the technology race, who are you betting on? With a view from the front row, my money is on the company that can spark passion in its people. This is not the cult-like workplace with people dancing in the aisles, but the one that hires and inspires based on the difference the team’s efforts will make in the world.  This company will successfully build a team that rallies behind their mission, with each individual bringing their best game every day…

Candidate Experience - What is it, What is it REALLY, and What should it be?

The candidate experience is getting more attention.  It can be, yet always is a differentiator in the candidate's mind.  A recent quote from a candidate highlights this.  "You should talk to COMPETITOR, their process is terrible, this is cool."  The nature of the candidate experience left a differentaited and brand positive impression.

How are you thinking about your candidate experience?  More importantly, what are you doing to use it to your advantage.  Effort to improve…

What a waste... think Karma !

My pet hates include: waste!

Give what you don’t want to someone who does – why not. Think Karma. Cooperate.

The supply of candidates to Employers by Agencies is rigidly controlled by preferred supplier agreements. So if you have say 100 Employers hiring within the Tech sector, you’ll have 100 PSLs. Now some of the bigger Recruitment firms may be on all the PSLs but it is likely that the 100 PSLs will each have a different line up of suppliers and that line up will be a… Continue

Recruitment Agency PSLs and the local deli

We all know that Employers that use Agencies adopt preferred supplier lists to manage the Agency situation. Idea being that you find some good agencies that you’re prepared to work closely with and you exclude the rest.

We also know that whilst this might work well some of the time, there are diametrically opposing forces at work that cause it to fail from time to time. These being: the need to keep the PSL to a manageable number, otherwise you’d be dealing with agencies all day long… Continue

Is Temporary Staffing Permanent Now?

An article in the New York Times suggests that employers and employees alike might be moving toward a temporary-centric staffing model.

In November 2010, 80% of the 50,000 jobs created in the private sector were temporary positions. For all of 2010, a bit more than 26% of 1.17 million jobs were temporary positions. That’s a lot.

What are we to make of such high numbers of temporary…

Recruit Better-Not Faster

I recently read Maureen Scharib’s blog post and it really got me thinking.  Maybe it was the timing; because prior to reading it, I was looking at my own call-sheet (calls made/calls returned/people reached) wondering what to do to improve the results.   So, I was thinking a lot, about the telephone!

So here we…

Value Versus Price

Selling value over price is so powerful that even procurement and HR may choose to buy in. If you have any doubts, listen to what Jen, one of my clients, had to say just a few days ago:

“You had suggested we go back to procurement and share the value we added and not drop our price as they wanted to see. They said our competitor, who was bidding for the business as well, was lower across the board. We did that and we just got word on Friday afternoon that we won the account This is… Continue

Direct-hire Job Orders Taking Longer to Fill

You would think with all the workers still out on the unemployment line, it would take companies less time to fill a position.  But recruiters recently told The Wall Street Journal that it is taking hiring managers up to four times longer to fill positions now than it does when there are fewer…

Is a Talent Pipeline Important for Successful Hiring?

The talent pipeline, an overused phrase developed by larger professional staffing firms that produces the idea that you need a strong set of professional people waiting at a moment's notice for the new position, the right job, the next career step.  It has become so engrained in our minds that this "best practice" is a must have.  But does it really work?  Think about it, are the best people simply waiting for the next role or the next step up the ladder.  I challenge you to re-think your…

D.C. Mayor Wisely Expands Background Checks on Political Hires.

In an economic downturn, there are some employers and many state and local governmental concerns that look to cut costs by avoiding background checks on public officials and political candidates.  Invariably, it seems, such avoidance of background checks comes back to haunt them.   Ugly stuff about an employee's political history is later discovered and this proves embarrassing and in certain cases costly.   There are often civil litigation and liability issues to be considered.

All…

Recruiting Candidates With Polygraphs Is Like Executive Headhunting

Recruiting Candidates With Polygraphs Is Like Executive Headhunting

Sourcing and hiring C-level Executives is a storied art, replete with stories of overcoming adversaries (gate-keeping assistants), clandestine meetings, goodie bags proffered (stock options, signing bonuses), and cutthroat dealings with competitors. Skilled practitioners of the art are held in justly high esteem for their ability to produce these rare and valuable…

Bounty Jobs -- Wrong For Recruiters? HR! -- Nope because you’re not a car guy!

Ok. I'll admit it. I too got pulled into believing that as a newly independent IT Recruiter I could jump-start my desk with Bounty Jobs by getting right into the recruiting as the job orders are already there, (due to non-compete agreements, I had no JO's initially.) Also there are big companies involved and the playing field is somewhat leveled with big firms. Their model clearly has potential.

Minimum Wage – The Good, Bad and Ugly

As of January 1, the minimum wage went up in these states: Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.

We’re not talking about a large amount, either for the wage or the increase. In Ohio, for example, the minimum wage went up from $7.30/hour to $7.40, and in Arizona it went from $7.25/hour to $7.35/hour. The federal minimum wage is $7.25/hour, and states are free to have a higher minimum wage. …
