How about some “optimistic” news for a Friday? I think things are starting to turn around?
How do I know you might be asking? Here are some things I have noticed in the past week or two alone.
My phone is ringing – a lot more than it has been!
I just read an article that said hotel occupancies are up in Q4 to 07/08 levels. They say that ADR is way down, but occupancy is up. Still pretty good news.
There are more mergers and acquisitions in the Oil & Gas…

My last blog post received a lot of great feedback, especially my theory on F.R.E.E. and how it applies to using Twitter. I felt that it would be appropriate if I elaborated.
F. – F is for follow. I often think how Twitter is comparable to an ant farm. Without the ants there are not going to be any tunnels built to connect with other parts of the farm, but once you introduce ants into the ant farm they begin building connection tunnels almost immediately. In order for you to move on…

Animal: JD, where's my money
JD: It's close
Animal: HOW CLOSE
JD: you don't have to scream, we're at StarBucks.
Animal: (looks around)
JD: like I said, it's close
Animal: JD, I want my money. I've kept you in business long enough and now it's my…

Social networking sites, such as
Twitter and facebook in particular, are featuring significantly in online debates at the moment, principally for two reasons it seems:
* Employers are using social networking sites to 'check out' candidates before extending job offers
* Employers are complaining about the time 'wasted' by employees who use these sites regularly at work
If you are currently in HR, and find…

Social Media at Work-Linkedin Training-Final-rev.pdf
Well, I just got back from a great event, where some new friends helped put on a great social media and networking opportunity for our professional associations, jointly sponsored by the BYU Management Society-Silicon Valley Chapter (of which I am a Board Member), and the (SJSU Alumni…

Tonight, on #hrhappyhour @SteveBose and @HR_Minion hosted, and Grant McCracken appeared. This post is not about him, nor is it about his book Chief Culture Officer. He was an intelligent, and engaging guest, and after perusing his book on Amazon.com I’m convinced he has his thumb on the pulse of how to shape, mold, and transform the internal and external organization culture. Cold cultures, and toxic cultures will kill the life blood of the company, its employees, and bury its bodies in the…

Popularized by "mad men" marketing wonks in days gone by, "must be present to win" is the tag line you've heard a thousand times in contest rules. Face it, no one is going to hand you the keys to the pretty sports car in the window based on you scribbling your name on the equivalent of a cocktail napkin - you have to be there when the drawing is conducted with legitimate identification at the ready. With the evolution of online media, being "present" has taken on new meaning. With the a few…

We have just completed some research to find out what candidates find most frustrating in the current jobs market.
300 candidates gave their views on a number of scenarios in the current job market, and indicated whether they were satisfied or frustrated. We also asked them to grade their frustration…
The headline results are that the following had the highest percentages of ‘very frustrated’ or ‘quite frustrated’…
The overall lack of relevant job… Continue

She who texts the fastest WINS!! OK, not really, but to be on the forefront of recruiting, mobile is where it's at. Think about this... In the month of January alone, I have sent 6,272 SMS messages. These messages served a variety of purposes. They were to friends, family, charities for donations, etc. I accomplish my main personal communications all through text. I am not saying that everyone is using text as much or even half as much, but you cannot deny it continues to grow. My son…

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has recently released some exciting compiled data that was created via the International Network of Graduate Recruitment and Development Associations (INGRADA).
As I was reading and reflecting on the information, it occurred to me how important it is - particularly in our current global marketplace/recruiting space - that we are aware of how the US is comparing to other…

In a few of my blogs I have spoken about things my Dad has told me. How I try to follow them. It may come out like I always do. Unfortunately I don't always, and yes, I pay for it. (He'll love this)
This saying has been topical for me for a couple of reasons of late.
Measure twice, cut once!
Over the…

Upon awakening I check my twitter feed for interesting blogposts. This is how I love to start my day.
Punk Rock HR, also known as Laurie Ruettimann wrote a compelling post. Social Recruiting Metrics & Measurements
http://goo.gl/fb/032B.
I have a love-hate relationship with this topic and here’s why. There are many consulting firms that do an excellent job providing back end analysis. There are metrics tools that include impressive…

This blog will be short, since this is a topic most already know much about. However, might I'm simply adding my side of it, in saying that I'm not the most technically savvy individual, as ironic as it seems. You see, my major was concentrated on broadcast communications, production to be exact, therefore I was required to keep up with the latest gadgets and graphic-design knowledge.
Then I left that industry back in 2001, and concentrated on recruiting and HR ever since and thus…

Today I was dismayed reading a twitter feed from a recruiter boasting that she had managed to talk her way out of meeting with a client who wanted a face-to-face with her. When I queried her she went on to boast that with technology she no longer had to even visit clients.
I have been in sales for most of my career. I first learned to sell with Pitney Bowes PLC in the UK, a truly excellent and professional sales environment that gave me a grounding and a sales ability that has…

There are many things about recruitment that I am passionate about, not least having the opportunity to work with some excellent clients and candidates that are both a joy to work with as well as setting me challenges in my everyday workload.
But if there is one thing that REALLY gets me going it's this.
It's the subject of FEEDBACK in the recruitment process and the need for educating some of our clients that I want to focus…

Great recruiting goes far beyond referral programs. The most effective recruiters build on their personal connections and create a talent network. A talent network or “connectors” are a web of motivated people who know potential candidates and can bring those candidates to you. Below are a few ways develop your network:
- Focus on developing a talent network rather than a talent pool.
- Use your…

Could it be? Some good news on hiring statistics for a change?
The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) released their latest NACE Index report this month - and it shows some signs of improvement in the college hiring market. Or at least an "improvement in the level of decrease." Hey - we have to take the good news from where we can!
Each month, NACE polls its employer members and reports the results as an…

There are more hospitality employees in Canada than in any other industry (and most industries combined), they number in the millions. When you look at restaurants more than half of all restaurants fall into the Quick Service or the QSR category and more that $.60 of every dollar spent dining out is spent in a QSR.
So if the largest number of employees in the hospitality field work in QSR, most of the restaurants in the country are QSR’s and more than 60% of all money spent in…

I've been meaning to touch on this topic for a few months now - and I was just never able to find a gentle way to kick it off. I haven't been able to find a funny analogy or humorous quip to kick off an article that hits on such an important topic. And the more I thought about how I should start a talk about ethics in the workplace or within our industry the more I just kept coming…
