Back to basics. Tools like employment agency software and mobile devices are great, but top-notch staffing still relies on word-of-mouth more than anything else. And great word-of-mouth only happens when there are a lot of mouths willing to pass on…
As I pondered the death of a 19 year-old former classmate of my daughter this past weekend, I was reminded of just how fleeting time and life can be. While goals and aspirations are worthy endeavors, the most meaningful aspect of life is each and every present moment.
This week, your being fully present with every customer, colleague, and individual in your life is the highest level of service you can provide. As you give the present of presence, you’ll be rewarded as well as you hear…

Daniel J Smith recently posted "The cost of (Personal) social media accounts", here on RBC. In particular he reported on the tribunal currently being heard in Reading, UK, between John Flexman and his previous employers B.G. Group, a company he was employed by for 8 years.
With respect to Daniel, who I have a lotof time for, I think this post is a little…

Whether you’re a first time job seeker or deep into your career, it helps to “refresh” our brains of the basics when it comes to interviewing for a job. Some tips?
Arrival: Show up to your interview 5-10 minutes early. Anything more or less than this is running the risk of looking too eager or unorganized.
Cell Phone/Pager/Laptop: Doesn’t matter if you’re in your interview or sitting in the lobby, you are not to pay…

More good news today for recruiters. The jobs report is good. I know we can spin it into being not so good and nobody should throw a party for 8.5% unemployment, but the numbers are still helpful to those of us in recruiting.
The level of unemployment is not necessarily a big factor for the recruiting industry, but the direction it is moving is. So when unemployment was getting worse, things were tough. They weren’t tough because of unemployment, but the direction unemployment was…

Jesus Christ, I’m on the clock here again. It’s a good thing my wife made me quit smoking. I’d need a carton to keep these nerves at bay. Now, instead I compulsively refresh my stock portfolio. It’s down 40%. In four seconds it’ll be back up.
Just checked. It’s down 45%. Shit, that doesn’t help.
Well, at least I’ve still got Bourbon. As long as I’m in this business I’ll never give that up. It’s noon somewhere for chrissake.
It’s D-day on a…

Here is our weekly feature in which we share the top articles we enjoyed from the past week about recruitment marketing, social recruiting and anything else in the recruiting space. In the first week of 2012 we’ll be talking about true SaaS, HR technology commandments, an innovative recruitment campaign, social media saturation and stagnant recruitment.
Here are the articles our that interested us this week (in no…

I am new to blogging on RBC....so be nice :)
Some recent encounters have prompted me to write about this recent revelation… In Staffing, going through hundreds of resumes per week, if not more, and submitting qualified candidates to open requisitions, I often find that we look for reasons to turn down or discount a candidate. I am not the only guilty party here…I find that I run into this with Clients, Managers, Vendor Management companies and sometimes even…

I just love a happy ending. One of the great emotional payoffs of this business is how darn happy people are when you help them land their “dream job”. It’s even sweeter when someone overcomes the odds.
I sent an offer letter last week to a young lady who first applied to a position back in June. Six months ago. She got the standard rejection letter, someone else was hired for the job, and that’s the end. Or was it…? For Ann, it wasn’t. She knew she wanted to…

New year, New articles to curate, New stories which just cause me to shake my head. One such story which has been making the rounds starts in (not-so) Merry England where “A human resources executive was forced from his job because his employer found his resume online and that he would consider career opportunities”. The site (Linked In)…

I would wager that it wasn’t a recruiter. This was a question I used to jokingly ask my potential candidates to break the ice, get them relaxed and open up. Usually they would say something like “I’ll let you know when I decide to grow up” or “retired” or simply “employed”. Funny, they all seem to hold true, even today. I don’t ask that question anymore but the “retired” answer seems to be more and more attractive to me now. If not retired, then maybe ready for my next stage of life…

Staffing and the Jerry Maguire syndrome!!
“Help me to help you!” We have all heard it, that very very famous and perhaps even over used quote from the movie Jerry Maguire. But when it comes to the staffing world it should be one of the most important quotes we ever hear.
Too many times there is a less than great relationship between staffing and the hiring manager (HM). Too many times, there is not enough…

I have been making job sites for 10 years now. Job sites and all related web site types. Job aggregators / scrapers, multiple job posting systems, recruitment agency web sites, …. I did it all.
Today I have been looking at my new one. Called simply www.JobsBoard.ie. And something was different with this one. And I do not mean the technology - that is always different. What I realised is different is that this is actually the first…

Personal Income up 4%. This is a totally baseless claim. I read it in a blog and the blog did not site any source at all so I have no idea if this is even close to true.
However, it might be true. In our totally unscientific survey, we have seen higher salaries. Who believes the actual reported numbers anyway? Our unscientific results are probably more on target. But we have seen higher salaries over the last few months and maybe even over the last six months to a…

One of the biggest highlights at Sendouts for 2011 was the release of the revamped Sendouts mobile. The mobile recruiting landscape had changed quite a bit from the initial launch of Sendouts mobile in 2004. Advances in technology, not to mention the proliferation of touch-screen devices meant that it was definitely time to reinvent our mobile app. Mobile will…

Social Recruiting finally went mainstream in 2011 with corporate and agency recruiters embracing LinkedIn and internet sourcing as a required skill for the modern recruiter, shifting away from job-board advertising to digital headhunting. It was also a year of continued economic uncertainty ending with fear of a double dip recession in Europe and beyond. Despite this we will remember 2011 as the year that the recruitment industry took its head out of the arse of the global recession and…
