Did Rube Goldberg Invent Our Modern Day Hiring Process?

For those of you who may never have heard of Rube Goldberg, here is a brief bio,

Rube Goldberg (1883-1970) was a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, sculptor and author with a degree in engineering from the University of California Berkeley. He was a founding member of the National Cartoonist Society.

Best known for his “inventions”, Rube’s early years as an engineer informed his most acclaimed work. A Rube Goldberg contraption – an elaborate set of arms, wheels, gears, handles,…

When In Doubt...Just be Yourself!!!

In this day and age where every little look means something, and every little phrase or #tweet means something else, where do we draw the line? At work, we are expected to achieve certain goals and carry a certain aura around us, In our personal life we spend an equal amount of time (or more) trying to distance ourselves from our work persona to lead a relatively happy home life. My question is this….What would happen if we just chose to put forth one (1) image and let the chips fall where…

3 great ideas to steal for your job board or career site

I’m a great believer in stealing ideas. Think about it: are most successful businesses truly original? Not often – instead, they take an idea and perfect it, then execute skillfully. (This applies to art, music, and literature, too – if you listen carefully, you’ll hear Matthew Sweet stealing from The Beatles, who stole from Buddy Holly, who stole from Hank Williams, who stole from….).

Are there ideas out there that are worth stealing for your job board? You bet! And…

Kids these days.....

I am fascinated by some of the discussions I see taking place either on Facebook or Twitter.  Something caught my eye last night during a job hunting chat that made me wonder just where in the world this is all going.

The "what do employers look for on your Facebook page?" topic came up.  Many participants jumped right in with what they suspect companies might be finding - and how they react to those findings.

Being someone who sees many of these issues in…

Life Lessons from Airline Delays

These days, if you travel frequently by plane, you know that delays happen.  They happen to just about everyone.  For me, the airline delays are just a way of life at this point.  There’s no avoiding it.  Whether you’re going through Dallas-Ft. Worth, Atlanta, or Chicago’s O’Hare, you’re going to end up waiting at some juncture.  Expect the unexpected.  While I was on… Continue

Minimum and Maximum Wages For All

Users of recruiting software know that salary details are the stickiest part of any hiring process. But it’s important to consider salaries with some perspective.

A few months ago, I wrote a blog post on the minimum wage, reminding readers that a minimum wage employee that works full time will only earn around $17,300 per year. Not…

Dear John...

NB - This blog was originally posted on Posterous on April 18th 2011.  At the last count it's had over 11,000 hits.  Someone suggested I post it here...

Grandma's Chicken Soup : Why Facebook Recruiting and other Items

I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend and was able to spend quality time with family and friends because it is time to get back to work.

We are in the midst of a transition period in recruiting and recruitment advertising. Newspaper advertising once dominated how people searched for a job. Then the big job boards supplanted newspapers as the destination of choice for job-seekers looking for new…

Five Common Resume Lies

I love staffing software, but I also know its limits. It can’t help much with a common problem faced by all recruiters and staffing professionals: resume padding.

In 2006, ResumeDoctor.com, a resume writing service, did an internal study and found that 42 percent of …

The Afterlife in Social Networking

Every month I have the honor of presenting, How to Use the Internet and Social Media in Your Job Search, to a group of very dedicated government professionals who are transitioning. While we present this class to many groups each month, this group is the most challenging due to their resistance to being on the internet, let alone using social media. And they have good reason to…

How to prepare for an interview

It's the part of the recruitment process that all candidates dread: the interview. Yet being invited to an interview is something that we should celebrate; you've been shortlisted, you have something that has grabbed a potential new employer's attention and they want to meet with you. Why are we always so nervous? How can you ensure a great interview?

Being totally brutal, you cannot ever guarantee a great interview, purely… Continue

“God, I hate recruiters!”

This little incident happened just the other day.

It was Sunday, so I was not in work mode at all. In fact I was watching my son trial for a Sydney Representative cricket team, and my mind was on him bowling fast and batting straight.

On the side of the field, the mums and dads congregated, and the usual banter was flying fast and furious, when one of the guys turned to me and said,

“I thought of you this week.”

The dad in question is well known to me. We have sat…

IF ADDICTION TO RECRUITING HAD AN IMAGE IT WOULD LOOK SOMETHING LIKE THIS...

Symptoms of an addiction to recruitment, otherwise called a "staffing infection" are:
  • a burning need for job descriptions...
  • leash marks from attempts to restrain you from going before "Ready, Set,... GO!"
  • a swelling of the right eyeball when five resumes match  your latest job description
