Reviewing the Basics

Whether someone is just beginning a new job or they have been in the same job for an extended period of time, the person's work drive is usually the same (or at least should be): to excel in that position in order to gain positive experience for a future job or promotion. While I do not pretend to be an expert on the subject by any means, I do think that succeeding in a position can boil down to a couple different variables that an employee can…

Job boards must evolve or die

Over a year ago, I wrote about the changes in the job board world. I also promised myself I wouldn’t write about job boards ‘dying’ for at least a year. Well, time’s up!

Are some job boards dying? Well, of course they are. All industries have some companies that are dying – and some that are growing. So,…

Career Advice from the Circus

"Palpitating pageant of pachyderms, pulchritude and pantomime! Desperately dangerous displays of unrivaled aerialism! Colossally comic comedians! Dainty and dexterous displays of principal bareback equitation!"

Do those phrases bring back childhood memories of the circus?… Continue

How to find and extract qualified resumes from the Internet search ?

Do you think you can find the right candidate for the right job when your resume database has resumes that were updated a year or years ago? Certainly not. There is every possibility that candidates might have updated their resumes – may be added a few certifications, acquired skill sets, domain experience or even changed their contact details, etc. So it is very vital for recruiters and hiring managers to find and extract the updated and qualified… Continue

What the Future May Hold

According to a piece in the current issue of Bloomberg Businessweek, in order to get a global read on HR Management practices a survey was recently conducted by Boston Consulting Group and the World Federation of People Management Associations. A total of 5,561 HR professionals in 109 countries were consulted on topics such as skills gaps in 10 – 20 years; measures taken during the recent recession and whether they would continue; and a… Continue

Change is Inevitable

The past decade was an incredible time of change, not all of it positive. I’m confident most of us would have chosen different changes or circumstances instead of two recessions, two wars, multiple natural disasters, and terrorist attacks across the globe.

None of us has the ultimate power to change global events. We can, however, make changes in our businesses to make these our best years ever.…

What I Know About 'Social' Recruiting

Here's what I know about 'Social' Recruiting:

  1. It isn't social until myself or my staff has seen our candidates face-to-face. A candidate can be an absolute rock-star on paper (or LinkedIn or Facebook or Twitter), but if I haven't seen whether the candidate is fully capable of engaging me, making eye contact, firmly shaking my hand or composing their body language... they aren't going to my clients. On the rare occassion I can't meet a candidate, I have taken to Skype; at…

Finding Your Exit Buddy - Movie Quote Monday

In our next installment of Movie Quote Monday - we go under the sea for inspiration!

Anyone who is in the midst of a job search knows that it can be a lonely and frustrating venture. The one thing that I am surprised at is that I don’t see more pairing up of job seekers to support, coach and keep each other motivated ( and honest) during a job search.…

Closing the Interview...at all costs!

Ok, I came across this video during my weekly research binge on recruitment. I seriously had to watch it 5 times, one right after the other as I was busting my gut with tears running down my face thinking “Nice Job Kid – double fist pump in the air”. So it is a must watch – check it out because the rest of this blog is based on this…

Good copy, bad copy (or, how the same job can be written in two totally different ways. One alluring, the other bland)

Today I am going to demonstrate two different ways of posting the same job on the web. The first way is the all too common lazy one where a recruiter simply cuts and pastes the job description and top and tails it with a bit about the client and a response mechanism. The other way is the right way, and that is, instead of cut and pasting it, to take the information from the job description and craft it into a bit of copy that not only flows, but reaches out…

More than half of UAE’s employers are planning to recruit in next quarter

New research by Bayt.com and YouGov Siraj

Overwhelming 67% of organisations in the MENA region likely to hire in a year’s time.

More than half of the region’s employers, 54%, plan to recruit over the next few months, according to the new Bayt.com Jobs Index study conducted by the region’s number one job site Bayt.com, in conjunction with research specialists YouGov Siraj. In the UAE, just over a quarter of the respondents… Continue

Linked In Invite Research And Some Other Findings

I first published this post earlier today on my new blog: "Social Job Search."

The blog is primarily aimed at Jobseekers, so whilst I don't usually duplicate posts, I wanted to share my research and get some reactions from recruiters. The results surprised me.

I’ve been reading some well intended posts recently from Linked In experts Neil Schaeffer and Tim…

I Have a Confession, I was an Accountant - Digging Into the Unemployment Numbers

I have a confession. I was an accountant a long time ago in an economy far, far away. I’m a bit of a numbers junkie because of my background. So, I always peak at the U.S. Department of Labor unemployment claim numbers. Like many of you, I read them, understand them at the highest level, and consider them as an indicator of the economy. Fewer claims are good and more claims are bad, right?

Recently, I subscribed to several very good newsletters published by the U.S. Department of… Continue

What language do you speak? Talk like a Pirate Day September 19th

I am very tickled with the idea of “Talk like a Pirate Day” as it gives us all another opportunity to give rise to a variety of our voices.

Many may think that talk like a pirate day is a folly, however, did you ever look at how you talk normally? No matter the industry you are in – government, recruiting, non-profit, mommy, daddy- we all have specific ways that we talk a majority of the time. There are key phrases we…

Is My Recruiter Meeting with Me or Meeting a Quota?

Some recruiting firms have quotas. Their recruiters must meet with the required number of candidates, even if the candidates are outside of their field. I’m not sure why a recruiter would want to spend time with someone they know they can’t help, but I’m certain that it’s not a good use of a candidate’s time. How do you make sure that a recruiter can help you find a job that matches your specific set of skills and preferences?

Use these two questions to make sure that your… Continue
