The best recruiters take a drill to client meetings (or how cultural 'fit' is important too)

Some recruiters remind me of my house hunting days. I’d go to great effort to describe what I was looking for - the area, the price range, what I definitely wasn’t interested in etc. and lo and behold I would be bombarded for weeks afterwards with details of properties that were too big or too small, in a different location or not in my price range. I often think it must feel a bit like that for…

Social Media and Background Checks - Yes or No?

There have been some feisty twitter debates raging today around the ethics, legality and morality of the use of social media to conduct background checks on candidates. The debate is quite polarised.

The “anti camp” is claiming that using social media in this way is an invasion of privacy. They claim that recruitment selection decisions should only be based on professional criteria and to exclude someone from a position because of something they said on twitter or the football club… Continue

4 Reasons Satan might be your Online friend!

About a month ago I joined FourSquare.com. Seeing so many updates on Twitter from people I'm connected to telling where they are, great places to eat, etc etc. At first, like anything else it was kind of creepy. Allowing people to not only see what you are doing but also show the exact location to which they were doing… Continue

HireRight launched its benchmarking survey today at http://bit.ly/HireRight

Each year, HireRight surveys recruiters and other professionals involved in workforce screening to understand the policy and practices of organizations worldwide. The responses are combined and reported anonymously to ensure individual responses remain confidential. Final results are published several weeks later as the HireRight Benchmarking Report.

I'm inviting everyone that's interested in learning how others screen candidates to…

Is a Company Culture Important in the Hiring and Selection Process?

Recently, a former co-worker sent me an article ( click here to read the article ) on how advertising agencies must change their approach to hiring. The article, written by Meredith Vaughan, President of Vladimir Jones, describes the bold approach this company took in changing their process in hiring individuals. I applaud the steps Meredith has taken in incorporating the company brand into every aspect of their business.… Continue

GenY Free Agency & The Dangers of Social Media

Generation Y has had many descriptors placed upon them: digital natives, entitled, world-changers, ambitious, lazy, and impatient. These descriptors, the changing nature of the employment contract, and the lack of quality information about an organization prior to hire suggests that many companies may be in for trouble with the group that naturally shares online with breathtaking speed.

We’ve already seen examples of the damage that employees can do to a company brand using the Social… Continue

Staff morale and motivation

I have been speaking to leaders of creative businesses about what it

will take to strengthen the morale and motivation of their creative

staff.

I have seen some businesses that quantitatively poll their people,

asking them to rank such things as their work-life balance on a scale,

and also to rank their satisfaction with their salaries. Hmm. I

wonder what sort of answers they are getting. Actually the answers they

get are not that helpful and it is… Continue

Sourcing – Recession or not!

How can you stop sourcing in the HR world? Or researching? Or name generating? Or pipeline building? How can you say you never need to look for people or that you have enough? OK, I’m done let’s close shop? Not happening in my world!

I love the JIT Sourcing concept from Glen Cathey (you’re my latest hot thing BTW Glen <smiles> ) and am all over the lean concepts which help you maintain that fine balance between efficiency and…

How To Manage Achievement

A few years ago a frustrated owner called me to tell me about some frustrations he was having with his top two producers. They are like poison in the office,” he told me. “The only reason I let them stay here is because they pay the overhead. But over the last eighteen months their sloppiness, arrogance, and condescending attitude has caused seven recruiters to either quit because they couldn’t stand being around them, didn’t want to end up like them, or because they duplicated their sloppy…

3 Birthdays this year; 1, 10 and 45 - Hurray!

Imagine the scene, a crisp chilly spring morning on 17th March 2009. The

banks have recently disclosed their nasty secrets and the country is

bleeding jobs like back in the 70’s. There is a feeling of doom, gloom

and total hesitation. A business limbo as I seem to remember.

I’d recently invested in new premises but I had to half my workforce,

which left my very faithful part-time administrator and me. Luckily, I

had treated my clients well over the last 10… Continue

40 % of Blackberry uses could trade in for an iphone ?

Can you blame ‘em? If you bought into a two-year contract a little more

than two years ago, possibly because of shortcomings in the first iPhone

(a perfectly reasonable decision), you would have been watching with

jealous eye the introduction of the 3G, the 3GS, and the launch and

growth of the App Store.

I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to change. BlackBerry makes some excellent handsets and has a unique value proposition, but if I’m honest, I think they’ve… Continue

Tax increase on the freelance consultant sector , can you make it

work to your advantage ?

As part of Government’s strategy to reduce the national debt, a number of new taxes have been introduced,

two of which directly affect the higher end freelance consultant sector.

The first will affect those consultants who bill between £400 and £500 per

day; and the second will affect all consultants billing in excess of

£600 per day.
