Google to Apple: You're a Big Fat Meanie!

Today in Atlanta It’s over 90 degrees and hotter than three hells.

But today in the Silicon Valley, it’s ice cold between Google and Apple.

“OMG! Google and Apple are fighting!” the nerd nation cried out collectively in ASSIC (text messages).

Eric Schmidt (CEO of Google) “resignation” from Apple Apple’s Board of Directors today was not a surprise to most of the technology world. Especially after the Google Voice app being pulled from… Continue

Handling the Panel/Group Interview

When thinking about an interview we most often envision a one-on-one scenario, however, group or panel interviews are becoming more popular. A panel interview is when one person is interviewed by several people all at the same time. This is often done for the following reasons: 1) Getting everyone together at once saves time, 2) It can show how the interviewee handles the stress of rapid questions and, 3) It can show how the potential employee… Continue

The Client Side - Cash For Clunkers? Seriously? How About Cash For Candidates?

Does anyone really think that Cash for Clunkers is going to help the economy? What a laugh. I happened to be out last week trying to help my mom trade in two cars and buy a better car for her, so I got to see the Cash for Clunkers program first hand and in full swing at as many dealerships as we could handle going to in order to shop her potential trade ins and get a good deal on a new vehicle. No doubt about it, the salespeople at all the dealers we visited were busy because of the program. We… Continue

Don't commit these work place fouls!

Work is a not exactly a sport. Some people seem to think it is a game. Quite often, I write about places to identify career opportunities or assist with a job search. Let's take a different look today.

Let's look at some strategies regarding work that you might not want to copy.

Not to oversimplify a highly valuable skill, but one of the basic keys to hiring someone is knowing the skills and personality traits you are looking for in a candidate.

Some people are born… Continue

National Identification Cards. What's the Purpose?

Small and large countries are weighing the pros and cons of national identification cards. Immigration, border control and economic reasons are just some of the items being debated. It is fairly simple to understand the perceived need to clearly identify an individual’s nationality for reasons such as employment and citizenship benefits. When reviewing things as important as who should receive medical services offered by the government versus who not to provide these services, the need for… Continue

"HEADHUNTER: Bounty Hunters for Talent" Episode 1 - Causality

Most normal people don't know what recruiters do. Sadly, I have also encountered a disturbing number of recruiters that don't know what they themselves are doing, which is not helpful. However, it does provide grist for the storytelling mill.

Most hiring managers seem to think that we have lists of people with a variety of characteristics at our fingertips, ready to be packaged and shipped at a moments notice. Some candidates have a tendency to ring us up after an extended absence… Continue

Don’t let your job search keep you down!

If you are looking for a job, now is not the time to let the pressures of your job search keep you down. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve had conversations with many, many people that have spent the last 6 months+ on the job hunt. In their minds they have tried every tip or tool known to man:

- Rewrote resumes

- Posted and searched on every job board

- Attended every network meeting (including virtual) in a 60 mile radius

- Sent resumes to countless warm leads and… Continue

Using a Recruiter to Find a Job!

It’s a tough job market out there! You’re struggling finding your next job and it dawns on you… “I should use a recruiter!” “They can be my agent, and they’ll find a job for me!” Wrong!

There’s no question, a recruiter can be a wonderful resource. I am one… have been for over 20 years and love the fact that I often get to help people find their dream job. I feel like it’s been a good day when I’ve been of value to someone. However, although I want everyone I have conversations with… Continue

RecruitFest! 09 reflections of the past

How exciting is that? But technically you don't actually "speak"speak at RF. It is a dialog, a conversation, the "UN-conference". I went to it last year, not really knowing another person who was attending, at least nobody I had met in person. Jason Davis went out of his way to make me feel comfortable (thanks, Jason). I have to say that it exceeded all of my expectations by far.

Want some advice?

1. Be prepared to discuss… Continue

Intuition in Recruitment - A £Multi-million gamble!

How often do we do things that just feel right? We don’t know why we do them, we probably can’t explain why but we just know it’s right. It’s been the same in recruitment for years. Recruitment consultants will tell you they get a gut feel when meeting a candidate; that they somehow know when they find someone who is right for their client, but how reliable is ‘gut feel’?

I must admit, I definitely do experience gut feel. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a woman – after all aren’t we… Continue

LinkedIn Help for the Clueless Job Search

A friend of mine recently moved to the Houston area and is trying to find a job as a Revenue Accountant in the Oil and Gas industry. Easy, right? Not necessarily. There are quite a few job seekers with the same skills applying to any openings that come available in that area right now. My friend needs an edge but has never done any real social networking. So I advised him to start with LinkedIn.

He had created a profile once upon a time there but never did anything with it (as…
