Hiring is, ironically, harder during a recession

Even though companies are laying off employees left and right, it’s still difficult for HR managers and recruiters to fill the few empty positions they do have. Why is that? As Rapleaf CEO Auren Hoffman explains in his blog Summation, it’s all about quantity versus quality. The top performers (what Hoffman calls A-Players) in a department are rarely fired; that misfortune usually falls on the… Continue

Build Your Own Applicant Tracking System

There are lots of folks out there that simply like to build things themselves. This can easily be seen with home improvement and is backed up with the success of “How to” books and the DIY network. The same is true for software.

A few weeks ago, I was browsing around the internet for some applicant tracking system (ATS) information and came across a video entitled “Build Your Own n-Tier Applicant Tracking System (ATS) in 10… Continue

Because I know everyone is incredibly interested in what I think.

I'm duplicating some of my posts at jonathanmcleodrecruiting.blogspot.com. There will probably be some unique content to each blog.

I don't pretend that any of it will be interesting.

Thanks for reading.

The Bear's view of the economy

With all the current economic woes, I am constantly asked by.....well everyone, "when will it get better". Lots of predictions are being made, but the bottom line is, we don't know. So let me share a story about tough times getting better;

3 years ago I was laid off (terminated, downsized, pick the term) from a large corporate entity. I could see it coming, so months prior I had incorporated myself, just in case termination was in the cards. I set up shop in my home and within 2… Continue

Recruiting Change...

Recruiting Change Last week I was working at my desk when my oldest daughter came up behind me and asked if I had time to review some homework she'd been working on for her history class. She said she'd already typed it up on her computer and just needed me to take a quick look.

"Sure sweetie," I said. "Just email it to me and we'll take a look together."

She responded with, "No need, Daddy. I already shared it to you." What she meant was that because it was a collaborative… Continue

"I Can Still Do That"

Changing Points

I was all set to write about people seeking new career direction. “I Want Out” will certainly be a blog in the days to come, a rant about how job seekers are clamoring to leave their selected fields of endeavor and searching for a “safe haven” in which to land their professional behinds.

The aforementioned piece would’ve been ready for posting had I not received a call from an elementary school buddy of mine, Danny Schneider. He’s an enormously modest,… Continue

Applicant Tracking System Guides

There are a number of different applicant tracking system (ATS) guides available to help both HR professionals and recruiters narrow down on the vast amount of solutions. These guides typically come from separate angles ranging from ATS vendors steering clients towards their solutions to 3rd party sources with a large amount of ATS experience.

While I have created, reviewed, and purchased many of these guides, I haven’t found one all-inclusive guide that covers all of the features,… Continue

A Must Read for Businesses Extending Credit In Today's Economy

As a credit grantor, you should be aware of some basic principals when extending credit to clients:

• Extending credit carries an unavoidable element of risk. You will experience cash flow loss through debt regardless how carefully you screen and babysit your potential and current client base. Unfortunately is a "Fact Of Life" for Financial Executives.

• There are fundamental policies that you MUST create, implement and consistently enforce to achieve your most successful… Continue

Stop Falling Down in 3 Easy Steps: Turn Job Loss into Opportunity!

Are you playing it safe, but feeling trapped in the life you have created for yourself? How do you know when it's time to move on from a job, a relationship, or even the town you live in? Susan Hand's Tips "responding to job applicants" Make it a Process

Corporate recruiters and agencies are overwhelmed with job applicants in these economic times. Therefore, it is extremely important to make sure that all employment communications are planned prior to getting in the ring. However, I have witnessed a bulk of organizations, and company representatives that do not respond or follow up to jobseeker.

I'm sure this is not because they do not care, or do not have the manners to communicate. I believe most likely that it is due to poor… Continue

Seminar thoughts

So I completed some job search/resume writing/interviewing seminars last week. Things went pretty well. I had about six people out to each one, but at least they all seemed interested.

I may have some more thoughts later on, but one of the main revelations I had was that I talk too much.

Cheers.
