Summer is here and its arrival is signified by the first week of July being one of shortest work weeks of the year. This is the week when the recruitment industry likes to put their rumor mill in high gear and starts spreading the myth “no one hires in the summer.” This gives average performing Recruitment Professionals the opportunity to go on an extended guilt free vacation. The Recruitment Professional still working back in the office is just like the good Farmer. They understand…

I received this list over 10 years ago and just refound it. I love the fact that it says “Placement Process” and not recruiting process. We are in this business to make placements! I did not write this list but do like it.

E-Verify is an online system that checks information provided on an employee's Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) against data from the Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security.
While the system isn't mandatory for all employers, there is federal legislation pending to change that. And…

I resigned not too long ago before setting up my own agency and so its pretty fresh in my mind how difficult it can be - scary, wrenching etc. After witnessing one of my consultants get a bit "frustrated" with a candidate about this it made me think, as recruiters, we can sometimes get a bit blasé about the subject, so I recently wrote a blog post on resigning for our…

Most people at least know someone who has padded his business expenses and filed for "creative" reimbursements on their expense accounts. In some cases, employers do not have much oversight. And in cases with which I have been familiar, often the employers don't care or turn a blind eye, thinking it's a better way to offer raises without having to pay the additional taxes and benefits. In fact, if anything, it's a tax write-off.
Padding your business expenses can be regarded as a…

Every time a hire is made successfully, it’s a combination of the right opportunity at the right time for both the candidate and the organization. A candidate is at the right place to move to the next step in their career and the organization offers an opportunity that meets the thresholds that the candidate desires.
When both the candidate’s and organization’s needs match up, it’s a glorious thing. However, there are many instances in which the timing doesn’t meet up and…

This past week millions of Americans tuned in to enjoy the 83rd annual Major League Baseball All Star Game in Kansas City. This Midsummer Classic is an extraordinary event because it brings together the top talent from across the country to show off their skills and represent their team as the best of the best. The All Star game brought together the league’s heavy hitters in Prince Fielder, Jose Bautista, Carlos Beltran, and Robinson Cano. The best pitching the MLB has to offer in Felix…

A recent stir concerning the rights of American-based companies to request and receive passwords to the personal Facebook accounts of their employees or potential employees has caused waves across the online – and offline – community.
A spate of articles has examined the legal…

There is a huge demand for healthcare professionals as the American population continues to age. To achieve workforce flexibility, many healthcare providers are filling their open positions with contractors. This creates a tremendous opportunity for recruiters who can work this niche.
If you place healthcare contractors, though, you will want to take extra care to qualify healthcare contractors and take steps to protect your firm from liability. Failing to handle…

Recruitment isn’t an easy lark. As a recruitment consultant I am often on the phone to candidates of an evening, arranging interviews and hearing feedback. There is an argument to be made that some…

Below is a copy of a blog I wrote elsewhere, my blog is public and read by clients, candidates, friends and randoms from social media. It was prompted by several people essentially calling into question what I do, I thought I'd recreate the blog here (as my first post!) to see other peoples thoughts on this. Also as this blog was intended to be read by people not in the recruitment industry so I have in simplistic terms defined recruiter and headhunter within…

Healthcare recruiters perform a very important service in healthcare and actually save costs in the long run. So why the snub? Hospitals look at recruiters as a necessary evil that they’d prefer to live without if at all possible. Again, why? It all boils down to the fact that if a company needs to hire a heathcare jobs recruiter it’s because they can’t find the right candidate for their open positionjob themselves. To some, it’s a mark of failure on their part, and the recruiter is a…

Talk about a catch-22! Let’s use Sally, the average Nurse Practitioner (although there’s nothing average about NPs), as an example. She has been a nurse for many years and has been working on her MSN for quite a while. The happy day arives when she has earned her MSN. She then sits for her national certification and passes. She is so thrilled now because she is officially a certified Family Nurse Practitioner!
Sally’s job search now begins. She applies for every Family Nurse…

Throughout my recruiting career I have had the pleasure of working with some pretty incredible people, people who have coached me, mentored me, managed me, held me accountable, people who have demonstrated by example how important it is to build strong relationships and how equally important it is to make a commitment and deliver on that commitment.
In my new role as Director of Recruiting and Operations I have an…

InMails are expensive but quite useful. If you take your time to devise compelling text for your inmail, you will reap the benefits. While each person won't be a slam dunk for the position at hand, you will have impressed them with your style enough to rise above the recruiter fray.
1. The Subject:
I often spend the most time on this part. It should clearly convey the reason for the message. It should be catchy but not salesy. It should be complimentary…

Yesterday, for a presentation I was giving on HR.com on the Candidate Experience, I received a really interesting question from a attendee on Source of Influence:
How many touch-points do you need typically for a candidate to apply?
First, it’s a great question. I’ll be the first to admit, I don’t have enough data to give a definitive answer today but we are striving to understand this…
