Hiring Managers Say The Craziest Things – Work Week!!

Since 1981, I have worked with over 3000 hiring managers across the United States.  Most of whom have never been trained how to effectively interview.  If they haven’t been taught how to interview, they certainly have not been taught how to select the best fit.  Therefore, they bring their own unique interview techniques and questions to the interview party.  Of course, the candidates bring their own special treats to the interviewing party; and I will share some of those also.  Doesn’t it…

Retirees Can Get Benefits Through Contract Staffing

As if the stock market crash a few years ago wasn't enough to ruin many older workers' retirement, USA Today is now reporting that many have not saved enough to cover the massive cost of healthcare they will have in their retirement years.

According to the USA Todayarticle,…

Want to Increase Your Business? Create More Value.

By Jennifer Brownell, Managing Director, Q4B

“Value is not what you and your business says it is. Value is what your customers say it is.” – John Jantsch

Companies exist to make a profit. If costs increase companies will look to raising their prices or generating more sales or both. In the short run, raising prices on your products or services would increase your profits. But very few if any businesses are in it for the short run. Generating more sales, landing more…

A Test Question for the People Sourcing Certification Program

Participants of the People Sourcing Certification Program go through 60 questions for the Level 1 and 80 questions for the Level 2 at the end of the Program. We use the tests as an additional opportunity to practice and apply the sourcing skills.

As several participants have pointed out, and as one of them wrote, the Program actually makes you “think” instead of just plugging in some answers and…

5 Ways Recruiters Sabotage Their Own Careers

As the Recruiter’s Career Coach, I sometimes think that I have seen it all.  Then I get that next phone call from a Recruiter scrambling to find a new position.  As Recruitment Professionals we are the experts on everyone else’s career, but what happens to our own?

Here are just a few…

Eliminating the Buts

The only thing more important than the language you use are the actions you take with both contributing to the perceptions that others have of you. Recently, I watched a CEO speaking with a large group of employees talking as though he were a champion of his people, yet, his language betrayed him as he created an image that his words were merely false praise. A few examples of his comments included:

“We had a great first quarter, the best ever, but I know we can do even better than…

Massage your client's ‘social ego’ for a happy ending

Some things in life are so obvious, we just can’t see them. And it shocks me how few people understand what the important part of ‘social media’ or ‘social networking’ actually is.

The exciting aspect of the boom in social technologies is not the technology at all, (Sorry geeks). It’s the ‘social’ part.

And the core rules of socialising online are the same as socialising face-to-face.

Pandering flattery offline can be easily detected, and only…

Every Company Has A Recruiting Strategy (some just don’t know it!)

“Plan your work.  Work your plan.”  I’ve seen those words attributed to the great Green Bay Packer Football (not futbol) Coach, Vince Lombardi.  Trainers have applied those words to all sorts of training exercises, generally in business.  Why are they universally understood?  The quote applies to all areas of our lives.  It especially applies to successful recruitment programs.

What is the basic premise of Behavioral Interviewing?  Once we find a way to be successful…

It's The Difficulty, Not The Level

Yesterday I had to be towed because my Suburban broke down about an hour from home. Because I drive a Suburban, we had to have a pretty big truck for the tow. Our driver was great. He typically does the big tractor trailers after wrecks, which is pretty specialized work.

On the ride home he was telling me how they have difficulty finding qualified drivers / recovery specialists. There are a lot drivers out there with a nick on their driving record, or without the problem solving… Continue

Clarify Your Purpose

"Our firm's growth was twenty percent last year, and I'm still frustrated," he said. He was a new client, running a $30 Million a year fee-based professional services firm in San Francisco. His frustration wasn't based on a monetary or a revenue issue. It was a performance issue. To his competitors, at least those who were still in business at the end of 2003, his growth was enviable. But he knew his staff wasn't performing at their peak levels. In fact, they were underperforming. "How can I…

Hire a Hero

This is a re-post of an article I published in October 2011 "Hiring Former Military is a Smart Move." It seems fitting on a day designated as Memorial Day that we not only remember those who have served but also the special needs of returning heroes and their families in a challenging employment environment.

Every civilized country has given deference to…

When interviewers don't shut up

Have you experienced a situation like this at an early-stage interview--you're excited to be there, a bit nervous expecting the difficult questions to be fired at you, but the interviewer is doing 100% the talking?

Then toward the end of the interview, you ask if he wants to ask you any questions, to which he replies, "No, I read your résumé. We're good to go." You're…

Know Potential Employees before You Sign the Paperwork

We all know that employers and those that recruit for them when outside services are involved make mistakes from time to time.

Despite one or more interviews, despite thorough questioning and background checks, some soon-to-be bad employees slip through the cracks, leading both the employer and those that recommended the employee with egg on their face.

Given…

I could/should/would take today off - but I cant....

Only a handful of my friends work for themselves.  The rest are employed.

Some of the employed folks are taking today off - getting a jump on the weekend.  At times I envy that.  Being able to remove yourself from the job for the day or week.  It sure would be nice I guess.

I could take today off though....if I wanted to....if only to prove "I can do whatever I want cuz I'm my own boss!"

But I can't.  Thank the good Lord…

Not really a dilemma more of a CHALLENGE......

Hopefully everyone is having a good week so far and are looking forward to the 3 day weekend.  Now on to the meat of my blog..I have a challenge for all of you corporate or business recruiters.  My field is legal and I was referred to an Attorney with an IP background.  After listening to and reviewing the resume I realized that this Attorney is actually much more than “just” an Attorney.  His business skills are exemplary and are where his strength really lies. …

Navigation is key to a successful Career Site

When building out your Career Site, it’s important to think about how candidates will navigate all the great content that you’ve created.  The strategy of “publish and pray” will do little to inspire candidates to apply to your organization and make the decision that they want to work for your company.

Just like any website, the Career Site can often become an albatross that can become unwieldy and unmanageable.  With much of the thought into information flow and site design…
