It's not WHERE you work. It's HOW! How not to reward recruiters...

There was an article in Recruiter magazine on 24 November 2010. That age old debate about in-house versus agency side recruitment!

The debate appears to be positioned as the two being in different tribes.

As a well know British TV character Victor Meldrew might say, "I don't believe it."

That is rather over simplifying things in my view. A core difference… Continue

Black Friday Search Syndrome

I have a theory that the majority of Black Friday shoppers actually lose money by hitting the stores early to get the "best" deals. I'd love to see a study reviewing lists of items shoppers go out with the intent to purchase with a comparison of the total cost of only those items before Black Friday, as well as the total cost of ALL items purchased during Black Friday shopping. I know, I sound Grinchy. I think all that beautiful marketing and crowd effect makes people forget if they even really… Continue

And on the Eighth day, He said, "Invent Yourself"

Over the last number of days, I have been listening to a lot of opinions in the areas of Sales and the Marketing of oneself (aka branding). Everyone has a valid argument on how you can succeed and where you could fail…..The lists are endless. All the points could be considered relevant depending on your situtation at any given time.

This brings me to today’s rant: Who is REALLY responsible for your success or failure.

The answer is real simple: YOU…

Can You Avoid Moonlighting In Your Organization?

Nowadays, many employers are confronted with a situation where their employees have a

second job or engage in multiple job-holding, commonly known as “moonlighting”.

Employees may moonlight for several reasons, including:

  • To gain experience or “test the water” in different jobs before making a final career decision.
  • To obtain additional income.(This reason seems to be more prevalent these days as the number of moonlighters rises.)
  • To fulfill a…

Industry Hotspots - The StaffingU Market Demand Report

We’ve analyzed the top jobs in the major industries in this week’s Market Demand Report and listed them according to the volume added to the market in the past 60 days. In addition, we’ve compared this to last year at this time and reported the percentage increase. Hiring is peaking in many roles and demand is exceeding talent supply as a result. When you sell over the coming weeks, you’ll want to share this information with your customers to ensure they act with the sense of urgency required… Continue

Categorizing Social Recruiting

Originally posted on the SmashFly Intern Blog.

Last week RecruitingBlogs.com author Jeff Dickey-Chasins posted a thought provoking article called Is Social Recruiting a symptom – or a solution. In it, he defines two ways of understanding social recruiting in a broader, systemic context: as a symptom of or reaction to insufficient communication…

This is what ‘competing in recruitment’ is NOT (Part 1)

The one word that seems to be synonymous with our industry is ‘competition’. We are forever telling each other how ‘competitive’ it is and how many ‘competitors’ we have.

And it’s all true.

But the areas most recruiters compete on are rarely the ones that truly differentiate us. Going forward, the recruitment industry is going to compete in totally new ways, and that’s going to leave many ill-prepared recruiters far, far…

Placement Fee Structure on Commission Only Positions

Hi there,

I need a little help.

I have a new client that is looking to hire within their company but they're looking to pay 15-20% commission to the person they hire in this role. The person won't have a base salary.

My question is how do I determine what the placement fee should be from a commission position?

Anyone work with these types of…

Are you contemplating changing lanes? Is it time for a career change?

The last two years our economy has really given us all a good shake. It was a cold hard slap for many who believed they were secure in their careers but received the “golden boot” out the door instead. Others went to great lengths to remain under the radar for fear of being the next on the booting block, if Bob the company’s most committed employee got the pink slip everyone knows no one is safe!

One of the strangest but arguably potentially coolest side-effects of being the receiver…

Didn’t we just fill this position?

A job requisition hits your desk and something about it feels like you’ve seen this before. The core competencies and job ad messaging both seem familiar and the job title you know you’ve positively seen before. You say to yourself, “didn’t we just fill this position last week? last month? last year?” If you a large growing company, this will happen to you more often than you care to count. But the question is how have you leveraged your recruiting process to make filling these common jobs… Continue

Your Pop-Up Indicator

This week, thousands of household cooks will be watching for the red indicator to appear that indicates the turkey is ready. How’s your company’s pop-up indicator doing? What’s it telling you about how effective your efforts are to cook up deals?
