Are recruiters barking mad or just plain stupid when it comes to LinkedIn?

Barking mad

Over the last week, I have had cause to ask myself what planet many recruitment consultants are on! And I have levied this point right at a good few of them - "Are you barking mad or just plain stupid? Why are you not using a primary tool that was 'created' for YOU as a recruiter!"

Now for the uninitiated of you,…

Serve or Receive, But be aggressive.

I had a chance during the weekend to squeeze out some time to watch tennis. Apart from the obvious thrill of watching the sport, I did have an ulterior motive. Who has an ulterior motive for watching tennis, you ask? And what could that motive possibly be? Maybe it was the concoction of a few sleepless nights with this new brand of coffee I’ve been having; but to me, the match seemed like a competitive arena of recruitment. Now before you start… Continue

Happy Holidays, and 2009-What about the Economy? Social Networking? Recruiting to a new level? 'Tis the Season to Be Grateful

I will remember 2009. I will remember how Twitter made a new platform Recruiters now use as a means to find talent, I will remember how Linkedin Revitalized and changed and transformed itself. I will remember this as the year that saw my career go in a new direction, I will remember it as a time where I found and retransformed myself yet again, and yet, to think of how much has occurred in such a short space and time, our careers are but… Continue

The Charles De Mar Corollary

I like to reminisce. I find it therapeutic to reflect on the defining moments of my career every now and again. These reflections are also good for a laugh, which is equally as important.

One of my favorite things to reflect on is the learning curve that accompanied the early stages of my career in Talent Management.

What follows is a simple to apply, yet foolproof training program. The execution of this program hinges solely on one’s ability to acknowledge the cause and… Continue

Being Creative Vs. Being Artistic

Over Thanksgiving I had a chance to catch up with some old friends from college and reminisce about some of the great times we had. That was several years ago now, and quite a few things have changed, but nothing has changed more than the definition of spending the evening "chasing girls". Just take a look at the difference in the meaning of the phrase in 1999 and present day:

* 1999 - Going to college parties and staying out until 3 am trying to give any attractive single ladies… Continue

Deloitte NZ Facebook profile - Live and Interactive with Graduates

Over the past few months, I have been watching Deloitte New Zealand build a structured (and very strategic) presence on Facebook. Today, they have released the next piece of the puzzle. Deloitte NZ will be hosting a live-streaming video/Facebook chat session for potential Graduates.

It's something different and certinally an idea that will be picked up by other graduate… Continue

Ethics and Morals...Does it matter when starting an Agency?

After working years for an employment agency I realized that there is no personal connections between the client and agency. It just seemed to me that many times a client will give the agency a list of the qualities they need in a new worker and an agency just sorts through their file and pretty much "picks a name out of the hat" sort of say. Seeing many failures and no communication and personal connections I was not satisfied and decided to start an Agency of my own.

I have this… Continue

Recruitment after the Social Media Apocalypse: What happens when everyone can find anyone

There is talk lately about social media revolutionizing how companies recruit, with some concluding that we’re witnessing the end of the recruiting profession as we know it.

The arguments go like this:

Social media tools (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, blogs etc.) will change the way companies find prospective employees. Search will be faster and more targeted.

Companies will use these tools to build relationships with pools of highly qualified individuals (who… Continue

Project HIRE - OHIO

I just returned from a meeting concerning a state initiative called Project HIRE (Hometown Investment in Regional Economies), to hire and train displaced workers. Obviously this is for the State of Ohio, but I imagine there are similar programs in other states as well.

There is funding available for displaced (layed off) workers to receive additional training up to $6,000 per person. Also for employers there are tax credits, training funds and OTJ Training funds. For Ohio you need to… Continue

How job seeker behavior affects job boards

As anyone who has tried to lose weight or exercise regularly will attest, changing your behavior is hard. You’re fighting years of mental and physical conditioning – and (unfortunately) many times the old habits win out.

That was the challenge that job boards faced in the mid-90s – how to change the ingrained behaviors of job seekers, to move them from searching want ads in the newspapers…to searching want ads online. It took many years, but eventually job seekers did change their… Continue

Integrating the LinkedIn API with your Job Board/Recruitment database

Last week, I wrote a blog post about how LinkedIn has released a public API for developers to build 3rd party applications using the database. Today, I thought I would show you how easy it was to create a application utilising the LinkedIn API. I want you to forget that LinkedIn is a social networking site, and think about it as a massive information database. A database you can now… Continue

Those days that are sent to try us... Suck it UP!

You ever had one of THOSE days? I know you have.

One of those days where nothing worked, where everything you tried failed, your ideas were crap (or so it was explained to you), your star candidate declined or worse, disappeared, and because of a decision you made an urgent meeting has been planned tomorrow which includes every C level executive in your… Continue

Holographic recruitment

I look forward to attending the holographic recruiting summit in 2012.

Check out this video:

It's like Second Life, but not. Now apply this to a recruitment context. Candidate beams in to meet with recruiter, candidate beams in to meet with hiring manager. And…

Talent Management Merits Your Board's Full Attention

Most boards focus on annual budgets and financial outcomes, often limiting their involvement in talent management to recruiting and hiring a CEO and managing his or her performance. Successful organizations know that's not enough. Talent is typically the largest single line item in an annual financial plan and the chief factor in achieving strategic objectives. Managing your talent is another critical aspect of asset management and merits the full attention of your board.

Eight… Continue

I Added Over $600,000 In New Business To KeenHire In 2009 - Wanna Know How?

About the Program

With a rocky economy, emerging industries on the rise, three generations in the workforce, Sr. level leaders on the verge of retirement/re alignment and a sea of recruiting alternatives knocking at our clients’ doors, it is time to start thinking about how we as an industry are going to align ourselves as strategic business partners rather than as transactional service providers. As the economy begins to recover it is imperative that you brand your firm as the human… Continue

Don't Get Scrooged This Season

I wrote this poem last night for my blog and wanted to share with all my friends on RecruitingBlogs, I hope you enjoy!

T’was the month of Christmas and all across the land,

clients and competitors were seeking the upper hand.

When all of the sudden to ACME Inc’s delight,

their big push for 2009 came into the light.

Recession, layoffs and hiring freezes they faced;

all were behind them, they picked up the pace.

But 18 days in December,… Continue

Joy

There is a slight breeze today and a sky full of blue and sunshine. The temperature is somewhere between long sleeve shirt and hooded jacket. I choose the hooded sweatshirt that I had conveniently ‘hung up’ on the floor in the back bedroom. It was lying there in a little box of sunshine. When I put it on I reveled in the warm toasty feeling. I decided to make a turkey bacon, egg and cheese sandwich.…
