Culture, Climate & Vision Statements

Culture vs. Climate

This whole vision, culture, mission statement thing has always been a little confusing to me. A statement that encapsulates the ideals of a business and motivate their employees to great heights. This work of art is then put in all the training material, posted on walls and… forgotten about.

These statements don’t change anything. All they really do is give your staff ample ammunition when you fall off the “Vision Wagon.”

There are the… Continue

Recruiters - think about your online brand!

I came across a newly launched website recently, which I had been following on Twitter. Judgethejob.com allows you to submit anonymous reviews about what it’s like to work at a particular company. Eek scary huh? Well, if you’ve got a lot of disgruntled ex-employees, yes. But let’s be honest, it’s not like they don’t have any avenues to vent their frustrations already is it?

With the rapid expansion of social media and other internet offerings, organisations now have more tools than… Continue

Are recruiting fees going down?

I found this post most hilarious as I read similar news items the year I started in the industry, 2002. The comments I read from recruiters then are identical to the comments I read in 2002.

Please allow me to elborate. Fees for recruiters who are new to the industry or who fail to differientiate themselves by carving out a niche of expertise will always be vulnerable to price. If you want to stay in this industry long term and be successful, there is only one way to do it. Become a… Continue

I am on Twitter, now what?

After debating about joining Twitter for quite some time, I finally joined Twitter in September 2009, not necessarily an early adopter but certainly not late in the game. According to a recent blog about the 25 Most Influential Recruiters on Twitter at www.thetalentbuzz.com in early 2009 there were 900 profiles with the word recruiter and now there are over 10,000. In less then a year, the number of recruiters using Twitter increased more than… Continue

Whats your digital footprint say about you?

So you have a profile on LinkedIn; pictures on FaceBook; tell the world about your day on Twitter and your job at your blog. If you are looking for a job, and I were to trace your steps and follow each of these footprints, what type of picture are your painting? Are you someone who likes to "get down" on the weekends, drinking everything in sight (proof provided by you or your friends FaceBook pics). Maybe you like to read science fiction novels (you can show the books you are reading on… Continue

A Rant about Clay Shirky

When I was in the first grade I walked right up to the drama teacher and informed her that, henceforth, I should be the lead in all student productions. She looked at me as if I were a dead gnat in her ice cream.

I learned something that day. Or so I thought. I learned that self-promotion is frowned upon.

So I stopped doing it.

Clay Shirky thinks that I should start doing it again. In a… Continue

SEO, Social Networking, and ROI...oh my

There is so much going on in the blogosphere about changes in recruiting. Search Engine Optimization for Jobs, Search Engine Marketing for Jobs, talent communities, pipeline building, ROI, and Social Media Recruiting are all the rage and this is a really exciting time to be part of recruiting, sourcing, HR leadership, and recruitment advertising. We've got new tools popping up every month or so (maybe faster) and I've had to stay silent.

Though it goes against my very being to be… Continue

Personal vs Work...you in or out?

I sit here on the plane, contemplating what is important in life and how so many things can get lost in the day-to-day. Conversely, there is so much to add to your life if you take the time to experience and

appreciate as it happens. Platitudes, I know…..Yesterday a colleague and I got to spend time with some new friends, learn a tremendous amount, share experiences and begin to build a relationship. I am at once overwhelmed and energized by the trip.… Continue

Recruitment in Asia- A Political Perspective

The fabric of Asia differs widely between each country, due to its size, range of cultures, environments, history, and government frameworks. Below is a brief snapshot of the environments in certain countries where Employment Agencies (EA’s) have operations.

Singapore

Singapore has been a strong entry point for many EA’s who operate within Asia, particularly for industries such as: Finance, Life Sciences, Medical, R&D, Gaming and Animation.

The ROI Monster Is So Because He Often Leads Us Down a Path of Futility . . .

A few days ago, I wrote a post titled, "Social Media Strategy: Let's Stop Talking ROI Already". This is a delicate subject and I may not have been as direct as I should have been. Let me cut to the chase as I'm not suggesting we come to the table with no financial justification. It's bigger than that. Let me explain:

1. ROI is a weak metric. It's the laughing stock metric of the Finance… Continue

A Tidal Wave of Change (Part II)

Even with all the recent economic disruption and financial turmoil, companies must prepare for an oncoming tsunami. Companies need to rethink their relationship with employees. They need to change internally and externally the way they engage and communicate with their employees and prospective candidates.

Management will have to change their idea of organizational structure from hierarchal or matrix to peer-to-peer structures with their group work philosophy and power cliques. A new… Continue

Painting a Rosy Picture

Do you remember when you were young and your dad promised to take you for ice cream if you behaved? You tried so hard to play nice with your younger sister and did everything in your power to listen to your babysitter in order to get that delicious chocolate dipped cone at your local Dairy Queen. If he did not follow through with his promise (and those times were few and far between), you would be disappointed and let down. How could he do this to me?

Making false promises or… Continue

Interview Strategies for Recruiting Top Performers

By David Freeman

Even though I work for an applicant tracking software provider, it’s no secret that in order to hire top performers, you need to be savvy in your interview strategy. No matter what recruiting software you use to source your candidates, your recruiting success depends on interviewing.… Continue

A Giddy Gander

Staring out across the frozen tundra that is Martelle in January, I began to apply layers of clothing to my frame, as protection against the bitterness. This, like many of my missives, is a complete exaggeration, it is actually around 25 degrees and not bitter at all. (Now, back to the story) Fearing certain death, or worse, disappointment, I took a pull of diet dew and was about to leave, when suddenly, much to my surprise, the familiar bong of an arriving email caught my… Continue

Recruit for a Purpose - Not merely a role

Originally posted here

This conversation unfolded over Twitter, where I tweeted that most commonly people got disengaged between the time of getting their offer letter and actually joining. And that is because they are most "orphaned" then. Some HR people recognise this - but the vast majority don't.

Then Kirti tweeted back, what about the people who get an offer and then "shop around"? How does one deal with… Continue

A Case of the Mondays??

I LOVE the movie “Office Space” – a lot (seriously – why are fax machines so tricky??). And let’s face it – it can be easy to slump ourselves into work letting the world around us take over. And why shouldn’t we be sad/mopey/sleepy (or any of the other 7 dwarfs) – just turn on the television. Tiger Woods – bad guy. Healthcare – not reformed. Unemployment – still pretty bad. Job hunting – pretty brutal.

Case in point: One of my dearest friends this week made a video reel to apply to a… Continue

How many job boards is too many?

It’s true: anyone and his or her dog can have their own job board. Actually, the dog could probably run the board, thanks to Job*a*matic (well, maybe not my dog – she sleeps too much).

How many job boards is too many? Peter Weddle says we have 100,000 or so – but only a small percentage of these makes money. If it seems like there’s been an sharp… Continue

TruLondon 2 kicks off in a few weeks time, and I wanted to share my thoughts on what an Unconference is all about, and the upcoming event in a few weeks time - TRUlondon 2.

So in the spirit of unconferences, I have forsaken the keyboard and recorded this short video blog instead:
