PROBLEM:
Most major recruiting conventions aren't for regular, workaday recruiters like US.
I've been to a few major recruiting conventions (and was even a panelist at one), but not many. Most of the people there seemed to be mainly senior corporate, staffing and recruiting professionals, aka, THE PEOPLE WHO CREATE AND OVERSEE THE PROBLEMS THAT WE IN RECRUITING AND HAVE TO SOLVE. Their companies paid thousands of dollars (if you include travel and accommodations) to be…

This is the hardest blog post I’ve ever written. Some will say it’s too personal, and they’re probably right. My regular readers know this blog is a diary of sorts, I generally write about whatever is top of mind and damn the consequences. Others may feel sorry for me. A few might even understand, having gone…

There were two candidates remaining. One of them was represented by A Sales Guy Recruiting. We felt good about our chances; our guy was strong and articulate. He understood the space, he faired well in the phone interviews and he was confident. He was a good fit on paper AND in person – or so we thought.
The two candidates were flown in on the same day. They were to…

Next time someone asks you to repeat a question, count the number of words. Chances are it was more than ten. I’ve often noticed this happening with salespeople talking with prospects and clients and executives speaking with members of their team. What’s the issue? Our brains process questions of less than ten words much more effectively than those that exceed ten.
Each time we pose a question of more than ten words, the listener spends more time focusing on the question and less on…

Let’s talk for a for a few minutes about educating our children. I published the meat of this article on Facebook, but it got very little traction. No funny or pretty pictures. No mortar board wearing cats. Actually, the picture I’m painting here is a rather bleak and troubling one. I hope to engage the Recruiting Blogs community and stir up a conversation.…

Getting the right job with the right company is difficult no matter one's field – but for some reason, that seems to go double for anyone who’s looking to make a career in the field of law. Perhaps it has something to do with how competitive the industry has become, or how highly specialized many of the positions in this industry can be. But is there any way that a professional looking for…

According to Business Insider, e-commerce is capturing a larger share of retail sales than ever before. Media, sporting, and hobby goods and electronics and appliances account for the largest percentage of online retail sales. BI expects these categories to experience steep increases in sales between 2014 and 2020. Is this…

While bigots are a thorn in the side of society, they can teach us valuable lessons.
Take Donald Sterling, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team in the United States, as an example. After his racist comments were revealed on tape he thought it prudent to be interviewed by CNN’s Anderson Cooper to try and clean up his own mess. Rather than rehabilitate…

As Barry Flack opens with in his excellent blog The slow death of employee engagement, there are few people who think that having an engaged and motivated workforce isn’t a good thing.
The problem is, as Barry points out, the concept is very new and with the exception of a few…

You may have all the right degrees that can get you through a job interview, if the interviewer decides to stay to the questions that relate job and how well you think you can perform it. But it has been noticed that employers like Apple, Yahoo! and more try to judge a person through some weird and tricky questions. Here are some examples of top 10 weird interview questions…

Take No Prisoners is a free weekly memo from Scott Wintrip that explores how Radical Accountability prospers companies and changes lives. Instead of taking people hostage with outdated, heavy-handed, and ineffective methods of management, measurement, and motivation, Radical Accountability focuses on creating an unwavering responsibility for getting what matters most done.
Paul is a classic example of being a salesman of the flavor of the…

I am constantly amazed at how little money most professionals are willing to spend to promote and market themselves. Like this kind of investment — investing in yourself — is crass, egotistical, and over-indulgent. Our actions and accomplishments speak for themselves, right? We’re sick of hearing about this “personal branding” thing. After all, we’re not cars or…
