Engaging Today's Entry-Level Talent

Now that the economy is beginning its slow uphill climb, boomers are beginning to think about retirement and the cycle of hiring entry-level talent is beginning again. Yet, a lot has changed in these past months and as any hiring manager can attest to, the Millennial Generation is like no other.

Three key factors make for major differences between the Millennial Generation and their predecessors when it comes to engagement and retention.

• Technology
- the Millennial… Continue

Are these the two dumbest recruitment executives in history?

Sometimes you just have to wonder at how dumb some people can be.

I know, not a nice way to start a blog post, but wait till you hear this.

Last week I was coming back to Sydney from a week in the Aquent London office. I stopped over in Bangkok, and had two hours in the Qantas lounge there, doing what all the other business dudes were doing. Blackberry, laptop, maybe the newspaper.

Now the seats in the Qantas lounge are fairly close together, and it is… Continue

Trust is the New Green

I wonder if this phrase will grow in popularity. It was respectfully plagiarised by Thomas Brown at a CIM seminar I attended last week and appears to originate from Graham Sadd. It resonates in the current climate where trust in various institutions has, rightly or wrongly, been eroded. In this post credit crunch age the successful new entrants to various market places will be… Continue

Site ranking tools: sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down

Sometimes it really is all about the numbers. For instance, you know that your customers (and competitors) will probably use Alexa, Compete, or QuantCast to evaluate your site’s traffic.

Never mind that any of these can be grossly inaccurate – you have to live with their numbers (unless, of course, you’re willing to open up your Google Analytics account to pretty much everyone).…

Killer Networking Will Help You To Get What You Want

It doesn't matter if you are trying to recruit a top candidate, find a job, get a signed fee agreement back from a new client or just gathering info about a fun hobby, the truth is that networking can be key component in your ability to get what you desire.

The world is filled with deal-makers and deal-breakers, the first thing you have to figure out is which you want to be. In business we all try so hard to develop new relationships by going to events, asking for business cards,… Continue

Ode to Recruitfest: "You have to be here or there"

Sung to the tune of "My Papa Was A Rolling Stone"

It was the 23rd day of September.

A day you will always remember, yes you will.

'Cause that was the day of Recruitfest 09.

You will get a chance to see them

Always heard nothing but great things about them.

RBlogs, we are depending on you to help us through.

And JD just smiles and says,

"Hey, You have to be here or there.

Everything is happening around you.

BRIDGE OUT AHEAD! Applicants Burning bridges before they’ve been crossed?

One of the most interesting aspects of recruiting is the human interaction and the incredibly wide variety of personalities that we encounter. We all have our lists of applicant horror tales and candidate side-splitters when we gather around the Recruiters’ Happy Hour story swap. Eclectic and unique don’t even come close to describing it (I see your nodding smile). But this week I had a somewhat unfamiliar and unexpected interaction with a candidate, and after picking myself up off the floor, I… Continue

How can third party recruiters and corporate HR partner effectively?

Jenifer Lambert - a Pinnacle Society recognized, top rated executive recruiter - recently interviewed me for her Recruiter Earth radio show. It was unscripted and live, and she asked some tough, frank questions about the keys to partnering with corporate HR.

I joked that I know that, for many third party recruiters, HR stands for "human roadblock". But I also shared some insights into what the best, most effective third party recruiter partners… Continue

A 'Talented' City

While providing consulting services to the governments of the Middle East on how to build cities that are powerhouses of talent we at HireLabs realized the true meaning of the saying ‘birds of a feather flock together’. The same logic holds true for talent. True talent usually has a hunger to learn and innovate, and when you create an environment where talent lives and works in close proximity to each other, you are on your way to building a knowledge economy.

Before we started our… Continue

AT&T Jobs iPhone Application

AT&T Jobs iPhone App It's no secret that I love my iPhone. It's certainly no secret that I'm an avid believer in mobile marketing for recruitment. So I'm sure it was no surprise when early this year I came to the leadership at AT&T and explained to them how strongly I felt that we should create the first employment driven application on an iPhone. And while I was probably guilty of using phrases like, "it's our responsibility" or "it… Continue

It's all about the numbers

Have you ever been to a job site where you looked at the hit counter and just scratched your head?

All websites want to publically say how good they are "we have X number of users on our database", "today we had X number of applications" "X number of candidate searches on our database" etc.

That's great! But who cares?

While statistics play an important part of "selling" your website. It is important to step back and think what kind of statistics are necessary… Continue

Actual Leadership or "Leaders gotta lead"

I recently got the chance to present this at a small gathering of business leaders in Santa Cruz, California. The crux of the gathering was to have these business leaders listen to real people. I consider myself quite fortunate to be considered a "real person" I think that's one big piece of being successful in this industry we all love so much and I believe this to be very relevant to the work we do. I do want you to bear in mind however that I am not speaking from a position of expertise on… Continue
