What is Perception?

'There is little conjunction of truth and social reality.  Around us are pseudo-events, to which we adjust with a false consciousness to see these events as true and real.'  What does this mean to you?  Put simply to me it means that just because I am told the sky is green, do I have to…

Employers Best Not Use Criminal Records Background Checks as a One Size Fits All

Criminal records background checks are not a one size fits all.   While most employers do conduct criminal background checks as part of their employment screening program, the idea is to use them wisely.  Wisely, in this case, means don't be indiscriminate to where you can get yourself in trouble with the  Equal  Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).   Pepsi Beverages just found its blanket policy, regarding criminal records background checks, cost them a hefty $3.1 Million in settlement…

The SOPA-Like Mentality

(reposted from Make HR Happen 1/18/2012)

I feel like I am crossing some sort of cyber picket line by even thinking about posting something about the SOPA protest happening with major players in the online community today. It is uncommon for me to directly comment on political matters because I am basically an advocate…

3 ways to super-charge your ATS with technology

For many organizations, the ATS represents the central technology that they use to recruit top talent.  It provides a great way for them to capture applicants and manage the hiring process from apply to hire.  Through these functions, the ATS is an integral technology for your recruiting process.

However, when you think about the recruiting process, the ATS by itself leaves a little bit to be desired.  While it does a great job with managing the hiring process, it often lacks…

Charles A Krugel - Employment Lawyer - Recording - Recruiting Animal Show

My guest today was Charles A Krugel of CharlesAKrugel.com - an Employment Lawyer in Chicago. He calls himself Chuck.

I had Chuck scheduled for a series shows. He was going to do a 10 minute spot at the opening. But today we kept him on for almost an hour and a half. I presented a lot of possible problem scenarios but the answer to "What's going to happen here?" is often "It depends."…

Recruiters…Tied Up, or free the shackles…

I’m back at work this week after a refreshing 3 week break - if you can call driving 4,500km’s from one end of Australia to the other, with a 2 & 4 year old in the back seat a refreshing break…

‘Are we there yet?’

‘Can we stop at McDonalds?’

‘Are we there yet?’

‘I’ve got to go to the toilet…’

‘Are we there yet?’ I’m sure you get the general idea….

Anyway, back at work I was tucking into my chicken salad sandwich and bottle of water in the food…

Personality VS Qualified

Here is a question I am sure everyone has heard a countless number of times: Do candidates who are qualified for the position get hired, or candidates with the better personality get hired?

In my experience thus far as a recruiter, I have noticed a little bit of both. Some of our clients barely look at a…

When is a consultant not a consultant?

When is a consultant not a consultant?

So I know allot of companies have changed the title of the staffing professionals to include the term “consultant”.  However the problem is their definition of consultant is incomplete. In most cases they are having the staffing professionals (SP) live up to the advice part of being a consultant but not the service part. They want their SPs not to solve the problem but instead advise and help…

Interviews are a waste of time ?

At the end of last year I attended one of Bill Boorman's recruitment unconferences. The basic concept is an open and unstructured forum where recruiters can discuss and debate topics. The very nature of the set-up attracts some interesting characters including a gentleman called Kevin Wheeler who offered a controversial idea that…

3 Ways Recruiters Can Make More Money With Contract Staffing

Everyone wants to make more money, and recruiters are no exception. One of easiest and most reliable ways for recruiters to make more money is to add contract staffing to their business models.

Contract staffing can help recruiters generate more income by:

  1. Providing a steady stream of income - When you make a direct placement, it's a one-time fee and you're done.  With contract staffing, you continue to make money over the course of the whole contract.…

It's a Candidates' Market If You Got Skills

We’ve still got high unemployment but it sure feels like a candidates’ market out there, at least for the highly desired candidates.

We’ve seen a number of positions lately where candidates are in high demand, and they’ve got options.  The sense of urgency is there for clients to schedule interviews quickly and do everything they can to land the right candidates.

This is always the case for unique and valuable candidates, but it has become more normal lately and is…

These people are smart, and much of what they say is spot on. But a lot is total hogwash too, no more than a distraction, and certainly most of it, you…

Swamp People & Recruiters

I came home one evening this past winter to find my husband Jon watching a show on the History Channel.  He was just laughing and saying these people were crazy and that I’ve got to see it.  I had never heard of this show, so reluctantly I agreed to watch.

As he replayed the episode, my first thoughts were “what happened to my intelligent, educated husband…
