When does the recruiting process end?

I recently had a candidate accept an offer to join my company in our Mississippi location. He has already signed the letter, put a down payment on a new residence, and has returned his direct deposit form. However, I still get calls nearly every day asking for one last bit of assistance, advice, or direction. This got me to thinking - when will my commitment to this soon-to-be employee end?

First, we need to recognize that there are varying degrees of responsibility in the recruiting… Continue

Recruitment, still a desirable career?

Imagine if Tarantino had never left that video shop - if Elvis’s parents had bought him a bike instead of a guitar - if Johnny Depp had stayed in school…Careers can define people; all they need is someone to point them in the right direction.

One of the major rewards of working in recruitment is getting the chance to be that someone; making a difference to your candidates - whether by increasing their salary, moving them closer to home, or cutting down their hours so they can spend… Continue

Searching for an entry-level Finance position where I can gain experience and utilize my education.

I am seeking an entry-level Finance position with a Corporate or Financial institution. I am a recent MBA graduate. I will accept full-time, part-time, contract, or internship work. My current objective is to gain experience in the Finance industry. My longer term goal would be to advance to a position involving my financial analysis training.

I prefer a work environment where I have frequent interaction with associates and or customers. I work well with people and I am anxious to… Continue

Self-Talk, Skills That Can Get Us Through Tough Times

I recently had a bit of a health emergency that had me experiencing severe abdominal pain. I’m fine now, but the pain was severe enough and lasted long enough that I ended up in an emergency room in southern California along with gun shot and stabbing victims, hit-upside-the-head-with-a-bat victims, and drunk/belligerent passed-out-on-the-street-and-hit-my-head victims. Then there was me. And the poor man next to me who'd had a heart attack. Oh and the girl who severely sprained her ankle on… Continue

There's something real scary at Monster

The New York-based company said Thursday net income dropped 37% in the fourth quarter, to $28.6 million, or 24 cents per share, missing Wall Street's target of a 27-cent per share profit, according to Thomson Reuters. It cited the impact of the weakening economy on online recruitment services.

I really enjoyed reading the last sentence ;) because it took a high-paying PR person to come up with the phraseology...…

We Can Pay Relocation.....Never Meant So Little

I know it’s not my imagination, because I’ve seen it with my own eyes…companies are filling positions with less than ideal candidates (not all of the skills, not the depth and breadth of experience, etc) to avoid paying for relocation.

It’s amazing; companies are still insisting that they are committed to getting the best possible person and are willing to pay relocation expenses to get them. However, as we continue to put candidates in process that would require relocation they… Continue

Handing Out Pink Slips Hurts

NYTimes article - very human:

I spoke and told everyone that our biggest expense was headcount and that we had to lay a few people off. I said that the executives were going to leave the room, call people out one by one, and help those whose jobs were being eliminated to pack. We hoped to save them from embarrassment. ~ Matt Cooper, vice president of Accolo, a recruitment outsourcing company

Facebook, LinkedIn, XING and Whatever Happened to Myspace?

Today on the MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Classroom Chat we're going to be talking about the social networks we're using and what we like/don't like about each. I saw an interesting remark from Harold Meller over on Facebook today to John Sumser about the evolution of a couple of the social networks - it asked: Is Facebook Taking Out Linkedin? My usage over the last…

Why Recruiters Fail: Self Sabotage

I wrote a blog post about why recruiters fail. I firmly believe that self sabotage is the number one reason why most recruiters aren't where they want to be. You can read about it on my blog post here:

Also, I launched my online recruiter training center today. I have free videos, free articles, and free downloads on it. Visit it at… Continue

What role do we play in our job search?

I am motivated to write this however will begin in saying that I pray my words do not lead anyone to believe I am not sensitive to what is going on in the country and the economic situation of people all over the world. However I write on the comments and expectations I see sewn throughout the conversations on the net about the changing government and the increase our new leadership will offer.

Let us be honest, if change happens - our government will have done little for our… Continue

Back in the Home Office

I was working the last 6 months onsite for one of my clients. The company was 2 hours from home so I lived in the Silicon Valley near my client's site and came home for the week-ends. While I loved the work, I can say the working away from home can be less than convenient. I had a great home-away-from home at the Homewood Suites in Santa Clara. Ask for Doyle if you are ever there.

I finished my contract and I am now working back at the home office, trying to get back into the… Continue
