The Perfect Employee?

First and foremost I'd like to say not everyone can be the perfect employee, nor should we expect every employee to seek the bar let alone try and jump over it. Many employees are focused on life outside the office even though their life inside it offers the livelihood they enjoy outside. Did that make sense?

Recruiting an Archbishop

Imagine having this as a retained search...

The New York archbishop has been referred by the late Pope John Paul II as the "Archbishop of the world" in deference to the historically lofty position of the leader of the New York diocese. Considering that the Archbishop of New York is far more than a theological CEO - the outgoing Cardinal Edward Egan had to close a $48 Million budget deficit - this position is one that practically ensures the holder elevation to Cardinal and a far… Continue

Digging Into RBC v 2.07

Digging Into RBC v 2.07

(Feb 20, 2009) Last night, I got into a long conversation about the meaning of "media", how it has evolved and what it means for the HR/HCM/Recruiting Industry. It all spiraled out of a round of appreciation for Rayanne Thorn's new vehicle, "Bonus Track". The idea behind "Bonus Track" (graciously sponsored by MaxHire.net)…

Tilting at a favorite windmill, again.....Assessment

Anyone who has read my posts and comments over the years or who works closely with me knows that I have a few pet ideas outside of my direct domains of recruiting software and yacht racing.

One of those pet ideas revolves around assessment, both pre-hire and post-hire.

The idea is stone simple, but it meets lots of resistance: in many cases, it’s a waste of time to assess individual performance with the usual success metrics.

Not all the time of course-… Continue

The Layoff - An HBR Case Study

"A Bain & Company study of layoffs at S&P 500 firms during the 2001 downturn showed that it took them six to 18 months to realize savings from job cuts. And, when calculating savings, most executives fail to account for the cost of recruiting, hiring, and training new people who will be needed when good times return—let alone consider the damage to morale and productivity. Those costs are often much higher than people imagine, which helps explain why the study also found that firms that… Continue

PART V: Happy Feet; the success of standing out!

I was reading this enjoyable penguin tale (yes I have the kids book and the DVD) and it reminded me of a tough economy and how to succeed.

Let me break it down for you....

Diversity Recruiting

What is the best way to promote diversity exclusive recruiting services (which include career fairs and direct placement)....through a company's Diversity & Inclusion dept, HR or through the dept with the need?

Most recruiters will naturally say through the hiring manager, however, since employers are very concerned with diversity hiring and compliance, this may ultimately need to pass through specific individuals at some point.

Thanks in advance for your… Continue

How do you promote your Recruiting/HR Team Internally??

It brings up more questions than answers in my mind.

Depending on your company culture, HR may still be seen as the workplace equivalent of going to the principal's office. So then it's up to us as HR professionals to promote all of our strategic efforts, to get out in front of the office and be seen as a positive contributor to our organization's success. Right?!

Sure ,we do this with our HR Management and/or VP's, but do your worker bees really get it?

I'm sure the… Continue

The Client Side - The Malaise Continues

It's tough out there folks and there is no hiding from it. We have seen things revert to where they were in the fall with positions melting away. Somebody tweeted a question this morning asking for what industries or jobs are still in high need and in need of recruiting assistance. We have about 1/4 of the jobs that we had a year and two years ago so while things are way down, we do still have jobs. We even had a client this week who builds bridges pull their positions after the stimulus… Continue

Hawaii Update 2/19/09

Hello Everyone

I wanted to send an email out to everyone and I appreciate all of your kind regards over the past months. As some of you know The Brand Management Group suffered a fatal blow with the US Recession and the sudden demise of the TV program in part. Since December when we shut down things have been idle at best and Helpwantedhawaii.info is still going strong and was recently rated a growing blog from Wordpress. Actually it is a large online job board I created over a year… Continue

Frupervisor Fires Frolleague

Urban Dictionary: A Froleague is a co-worker and part of your Facebook network. A Frupervisor is your Supervisor at work and on your Facebook.

Here is a story. The names have been changed to protect the innocent….and guilty.

It was Monday morning when Bob got the call. “He lost his teeth and his arm was broken” said his girlfriend. Her boyfriend, Larry, was in a horrific auto accident.

Bob tried to send flowers to Larry at the hospital but they didn’t have a… Continue
