A job board megamix – Job Board Doctor’s greatest hits

There have been a lot of blog posts here over the years – 120, to be exact. Some faded quickly, and some didn’t. So I thought it might be useful to have a roundup of what I consider to be the most interesting and useful (if not always successful) posts. Hope you like them!

Which question(s) do you think other recruiters should ask more often?

Early on in my career as a recruiter, after the initial call with any candidate, I'd always wonder whether I had learned enough and asked the right questions. I still don't like to think that I know everything.  I'd like to hear what questions recruiters here think other recruiters should be asking more often or even at all.

I haven't been visiting RB as regularly as I'd like to, so if this has been asked and answered before, feel free to move on. :)

Is Your Gatekeeper Holding the Keys To Your Office or Your Kingdom?

"This is great, but we should have started six months ago.”

That statement was said to me by the CEO of a not insignificant Melbourne manufacturing company last week. Mindset has just commenced a large organisational transformation project with them that will see significant cultural and personnel change over the next 12 months. The company has been losing market share and profit dramatically so the CEO is perched precariously on a burning platform.

Let’s analyse his… Continue

Employment Screening and Sealed or Expunged Criminal Records

When conducting county criminal background checks for employment screening purposes, be aware that you, the employer, are hnot suppose3d to consider sealed or expunged records.   This would seem simple t first, as sealed or expunged records should not be returned to you.

But, like with many things, it is not always as clear cut as it first appears.Sometimes when conducting background checks for clients we will find that records show that a record has been sealed.  Or there is a…

That horrendous 4 letter word

The other day, a consultant set aside everything she was working on because a client dared to use a 4 letter word on her. She even had the audacity to tell me “This is the best thing to happen on my desk today”

The 4 letter word being ‘asap’ (well it’s not really a ‘word’ in the true sense but you get my point)

So what exactly is asap?

A quick Wikipedia search came up with a hard rock band, a television series in the Philippines and even a Canadian aircraft… Continue

Sourcer or Recruiter…What Am I?

This week I took part in a #Radchat on Recruiting and some of the issues in the profession moving forward. There was alot of talk about mystique, “magic”, Smoke and Mirrors, and how its an issue to find the line where Sourcing stops and Recruiting begins. Now I know I’m still fairly new in this circle, and I will be the first to admit I don’t have the answers, but I do have some sure-fire ways to get them and be successful.

1. Ask Questions and lots of them, you will never know…

The Recruiters the Movie – How would you write the Script?

With all of the straight and narrow, by the book, out of the box, sane and insane, crazy and not so crazy personalities that make up the $500 Billion dollar Global Recruitment Industry we call home – I thought where is our Boiler Room,…

So you or your candidate needs a job And is frustrated!

Does this title resonate with you?  If so, it’s probably because you’re either looking for a job or recently spoke to a candidate that is really frustrated by how long they’ve been looking.  In either case, it makes complete sense for someone who has been out of work for a while to be feeling frustrated, angry, hopeless or depressed.

Let’s start with a candidate scenario. While trying to find the perfect candidate, you come across a beautiful resume. You get the person on…

Remember it is not personal!!!

Remember it is not personal!!!

I am taking time out form my series on “staffing function” to address those in need.

Times are strange right now. People are losing their jobs for the strangest reasons. You must always remember that in most cases it is not personal. In most cases it is not personal, it is business. That is not to say sometimes it is never personal, politics make for strange bedfellows, I have been victim of that myself more than once.…

In my years of headhunting top talent I’ve helped candidates come up with Quirky Sneaky, Desperate, Slightly Kooky, Yet Effective Ways to leave the office, (in the middle of the day) - especially for demanding executives that need to meet them asap. Here are 10 of my favorites...

Importance of Candidate Experience -part 3: Emails

There is nothing more frustrating for a candidate then taking the time to fill out an application form, submitting it and then hearing nothing. How long do they wait for before assuming they haven’t been successful then start the application process all over again somewhere else?

A variation of this is when a screen comes up once you’ve applied, telling you that due to the high number of applicants, they will only contact you if you’ve been successful.

Looking around, it’s…

How Not to Get Hired at Groupon: Stalk Us

How Not to Get Hired at Groupon: Stalk Us. This may seem slightly obvious, but excessive social networking with recruiters can sometimes work against your chances of getting hired. We ask that everyone apply via our career site, but there are some additional steps you can take. While we very much appreciate someone doing some extra homework and finding us on a professional site such as LinkedIn, try to keep your…

I'm gonna make you a (counter) offer you can't refuse...

A friend approached me recently asking whether or not he should accept a considerable counter-offer from his employer following his recent resignation.

The question made me remember my recruitment consultancy training of how to handle such situations.  Fortunately, now possessing the in-house experience I was in a better position to offer balanced(ish)  advice for…

How do I Recover from a Bad Job Interview?

Going on a job interview is nerve racking and I am certain dreaded by most professionals.  Where do the nerves and stigma come from?  Previous interviews that didn’t go well and the position that wasn’t offered, that’s where.

Think about it, you have finally gotten the dream interview for the job you have always wanted.  5 minutes in, things start going south and fast.  Stumbling answers, twisted tongue, and the sweat - the company can see right through you.  They know all your…

Hot Spots – The StaffingU Market Demand Report

Hot Spots are areas where demand is outpacing supply. The result is that prospects in these areas are more likely to be open to using your services, especially if you provide data, such as this information, on market demand and the impact this will have on their ability to hire quality talent.

Bookkeeping, Accounting, and Auditing Clerks in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana (153% normal demand)

Computer Programmers in Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta (153% normal…

Top Ten Recruitment Process Outsourcers

And here’s another Top Ten list! This time for Recruitment Process Outsourcing companies.. As usual, it’s based on feedback we’ve heard, people we’ve worked with, awards that have been awarded and even the general word about town.

My Top Ten whacky comparison today is the Top Ten Weird Sports. This list may not be as weird, but it’s just as exciting-I promise.

So here we go…

Amicable Departures

The hosts of the Today Show are scheduled to be leaving, with the network fearful about losing ad revenue because of the popularity of Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer.  Charlie Sheen’s departure from Two and a Half Men is expected to cost CBS millions.

Your executives may not be show business celebrities, but how important are they to your business? And how would your customers react if you lost a key VP?  Conversely, if one of your executives were performing poorly, but left on bad…
