Remember me? Keys to Successful Relationship Building in Recruiting

I’ve never grown tired of the experience of having my former placements cross paths with recruiters I have managed and trained.  I see their names and say “Hey – I placed that person years ago, see if they remember me!”  The answer always comes back with a stellar “YES and I loved working with her!”  Now I am not trying to say I’ve never had a bad experience or fallen on my face with a candidate - that is part of our business.  But when all is said and done – nothing feels better than…

What Life's Road Puts Before Us

In haste I hurried home as I was late again after a busy day at work.  New baby, new obligations, new changes and Voila - it's like everything moves and flows with the seasons and days.  In the past few months each new change has brought an interesting perspective - how can I achieve what I set out to do, when momentous occasions in my career make me stand back and say - Wow! Did I really do that? As I walked in the door I took stock of what my familial needs were - challenges financially,…

2011 SHRM Conference In Las Vegas

What do Richard Branson, Arianna Huffington, Michael J. Fox, and Tim Giehll have in common?

They’ll all be at the 2011 SHRM Conference and Exposition on June 26-29 in Las Vegas. If you’re hesitant to go because of the price, read on. There’s a way to get free passes to the Exposition through Bond Talent.

This conference is, in my mind, more…

Looking for an IT Project Manager in the Mid-Atlantic? Try DC or Baltimore.

As employers increase spending on IT projects, IT project managers are high up on their list of talent to add quickly. In the past 30 days, employers posted more than 18,700 job ads for IT project managers, a 25% increase over the same time frame last year.

Of the top 25 locations where employers are looking for this IT talent, six are located in the Mid-Atlantic region. But where are employers having difficulties sourcing project managers, and where is there an adequate…

Women Now Outnumber Men In The Workforce – What Does This Mean for Our Future?

In February 2010, The New York Times reported that, for the first time in recorded history, women outnumbered men on the nation’s payrolls.

What does this mean for the American workforce?

Unfortunately, women’s ascendance in the workplace is partially related to the recent recession. More men work in industries hit harder by the recession, such as financial services, manufacturing and construction. Women tend to predominate in industries such as education and…

Do Resumes Tell the Whole Story?

(excerpt taken from John Leonard's site blog)  Does a candidate's resume do him or her justice?

Recruiters, how often do you come across a candidate with a flawless resume who lacks interview skills, or, an unpolished resume of a candidate who actually shines in person?

It’s like developing interest in a potential partner after reading their on-line…

A job board owners view of LinkedIn

There’s a post on Forbes entitled ‘Linkedin is about to put job boards out of business‘. Although I know the author Dan Schwabel and like him, he is off-base with his assumptions.

LinkedIn just announced a new feature that allows job seekers to ‘apply with linkedin’. Its a button that companies can put on their career pages and let job seekers submit…

Changes...

Change occurs all the time, usually in subtle ways but occasionally in a manner that feels like a ton of bricks were dropped on your head. This then leads to a lot of questions and sometimes a little hesitation as a new direction is chosen and the path is mapped out. Unsure of the destination you head out (knowing that the journey is half as much fun as reaching the destination.)

This is usually the point where you start to ask questions, verify the new goals and set up the strategy…

Do you know a Shrew that needs Taming?

A while ago, I mentioned to you about how I have a daughter who studies philosophy and literature in college. We’ve discussed multiple different ways her world of arts and my world of business coincide and have even produced a blog from one of those very discussions. Today is another addition to those that I have already shared with you. This day is a day we take some advice from the greatest playwright of our time and apply it to the business world, because what Shakespeare taught us about…

Lessons learned from the resignation of Jim Tressel

Jim Tressel was the coach for The Ohio State football program since 2001.  He brought them their first national championship in 34 years, one year into his tenure and held an unbelievable record of 106-22 during his tenure.  Translation; big money for the school, NCAA, television, etc.

In December, five Ohio State players were found to have received cash and discounted tattoos.  However, all were permitted by the NCAA to play in the Buckeye's 31-26 victory over Arkansas in…

In response to the recent United States Supreme Court Ruling to uphold the 2007 Legal Arizona Workers Act, the Los Angeles Times has issued an editorial saying that you cannot rely on E-Verify or the I-9 Background Search.   The Arizona Law stipulates that employers who hire undocumented or illegal workers will be penalized for doing so and that the second offense may result in the revocation…
