Today was, by far, the darkest day of the year. Before I knew it, the Grim Reaper of Recruiting was standing about 20 feet behind me and decided to cast a demon into my life. The signals were all there.
Earlier, half paying attention and knee deep in yesterday’s e-mail candidate applications, I sort of overheard one of the recruiters here say to someone that they’d call back “in a bit”. I was so intense today that I barely noticed that our little boombox played…

Most of you probably heard or felt the uproar yesterday on this new job board, but for anyone that might have missed;
Beautiful people get more opportunity in life. This is pretty widely accepted.
Now an online recruitment site is taking that assertion to the next level by allowing only beautiful people on their new job…

A wise man once told me, we all are in sales. Do you believe that statement? I don't care what profession you are in, you have sold. My whole life I have fought it. I didn't want to be labeled "the sales guy". You know what? I am over it. I am a sales guy. You are too. We all have varying levels of sales in our blood, but we are always trying to convince…

I’ve been consulting in the job board industry since 2009 and active with job boards for much longer. In all that time, a particular type of article / blog post / etc. has persisted and even occasionally thrived: the ‘job boards are dead‘ article. In fact, these have been so persistent and resilient (much like ‘…

Critical to any recruiter’s career, is the ability to find and maintain relationships with exceptional passive talent. According to one LinkedIn report, only 21% of the world’s workforce considers themselves an active candidate. The other 79% are passive candidates. These so-called passive candidates are where you will build your core network.…

Management training for your recruitment managers often falls at the end of a long to-do list for most recruitment business owners. With many other urgent and important activities piling up, planning and delivering training is probably the last thing on your stretched mind.
The truth is though that spending time helping your recruitment managers improve…

Great recruitment managers are what every recruitment business owner would love in their agency. Is it really possible though? Are great managers born like, supposed great sales people or can great management skills be learnt over time, with the correct attention and focus.
The truth is it is generally considered a combination of the two. It helps if we…

Recruitment consultant training is often a good first step if you have an under performing new recruiter. Before you head off to Google or pick up the phone to bring someone in to help you need to find out a bit more about the situation. Likewise if you have a recruiter who is quite frankly a pain in the neck just hang back before you cut them out.…

“Why should I care about the views of unsuccessful candidates? I spend long enough processing the ones we hire to worry about those we don’t.”
This is something a lot of recruiters generally don’t say out loud but often think as the workload increases.…

Anyone with an eye on talent acquisition has seen the debate on whether Facebook or LinkedIn is stickier in attracting
top candidates. A popular perspective is that Facebook is where you keep your personal friends, while LinkedIn is where you keep it professional. In fact, most of the folks I talk to tell me this is their approach the two social networks.
On the surface the story seems to fit. LinkedIn is branded…

So I'll start this one with a joke:
Today at 3PM, one of my established clients had their VP of Sales write me an e-mail. He dusted off our fee agreement and changed some words and highlighted the changes in the 3M patented neon yellow highlighter look. He writes in the body of the e-mail that he's been asked (?) to "take a look" at our (20% BTW - yawn) fee agreement. He says that if "everything looks ok" then we can keep going on his sales role he's trying to fill.
The…

Before doing this, I was an engineer back when my face didn't have "laugh lines". I actually was involved in automotive engineering groups conducting studies on automotive engineered systems.
Needless to say, the byproduct of this was learning the ins-and-outs, good-and-bad within the automotive supply base.
A few years later after I was zapped by an extraterrestrial gamma ray, I found out I was a Recruiter and soon was filling positions for a very admirable automotive…

A year ago today I married the beautiful Holly in New York’s Central Park. What a day that was, a mixture of bliss, joy, and anxiety. No, I wasn't anxious about marrying her, nor did it have anything to do with fear that one of our guests would get awkwardly drunk and start removing their clothes (although that would have made for an interesting blog post). It was about rain on our wedding day.
While marital lore says this brings good luck, the approaching storm looked like anything…

I'm not quite as glib and bullet-proof feeling as I was on Friday (Reference the "Day 4" blog posting).
Yea. The weekend was OK but I kind of feel like I'm planning for a wedding all over again. Mountains and mountains of preparation all to be shot in a short period of time.
It wasn't that reading a ga-zillion resumes doesn't seem satisfying, my mental burdens was the stuff on the outskirts. Friday night was a pure blow off. I decided to run six miles on Saturday morning…
