Finding the Right Recruitment Messaging Takes Time (and Metrics)!

Every time you open a new job position and start a job distribution campaign, you have a great opportunity to learn what works and what doesn't in terms of your recruitment messaging.  But that insight only comes if you have the right recruitment metrics capabilities in place in order to record and analyze your messaging.

Once you have your metrics in place, the key…

Recruit or Hire: YOU decide

In the off season leading up to the 2011 Major League Baseball season, Clifton Pfifer Lee shocked the almighty bottomless pocketbook bearers of the New York Yankees and the down home, feel-good Texas Rangers by signing a below-market-value deal to pitch for the Philadelphia Phillies. The move was not solely motivated by money or warm fuzzy feelings. He took less money and moved to a city with a traditionally aggressive fan-base where players with large contracts who don’t meet…

The Need for Healthcare Worker's Background Checks

The quantity of abuses found in healthcare are legion. It's really kind of nuts when you allow for abuses against the elderly and children, theft, be it stealing for patients or stealing drugs. There is physical abuse and mental abuse. In some cases, patients enter healthcare facilities and emerge perhaps in worst shape than when they first came in.

Mot healthcare workers are conscientious and got into the industry because of their desire to help people. They are patient souls for… Continue

Extending Job Offers Too Late

With the demand for technical talent these days I wonder why, after completing many rounds of interviews and deciding to hire a candidate, it takes more than three days to come out with an offer. Why wait? You lose momentum from the last interview with every minute that goes by. Take advantage of the moment and make the offer you intend to make within 24 hours of the candidate’s final interview. Otherwise you run the risk of stunting the momentum you’ve worked so hard to create and souring the… Continue

This one is all about me – #myjobhunt 2011

It seems frightening to think that it has been nearly a year.

A little over a year ago, in fact at the end of next week it will be a year, that I made the decision to change jobs.

Time flies when having fun.

Little did I suspect how that decision would impact me and how the activities of last summer and the people I would meet would change my life. I’m not talking about a change so inspiring that an afternoon TV drama could be made of it.  But it did change me, for… Continue

Hiring Mistakes: How to Avoid Them and What to Do If You Don’t

Have you ever hired someone who didn’t turn out to be what you expected?  Did that seemingly well-spoken, educated and experienced interviewee turn into just another “warm body” consuming valuable office air, or worse, turning off your best customers?  We call it a “cultural malignancy” when a senior level hire fails to fit with their team – affecting team members’ performance or causing key team members to leave. Ouch.

Well, it turns out you’re not the only one who’s been caught in a…

Demand for Registered Nurses Slips in June

Registered Nurses continue to be the most in-demand occupation in the US by a considerable margin, with 86,541 new online job ads posted by employers and staffing agencies in June. Hiring demand for RNs declined slightly last month, with a 2% dip, but still holds on to gains of more than 56% in 2011.

Authenticity, Believability and Commitment

To me, there seems to be two types of people in the workforce: Those that can and those that wish they could. Once we realize which of the two groups we are currently in, then we can take the steps necessary to advance to the more prestigious group. It has been beaten into us from the time we are old enough to understand that we always have to be…

Now that we understand each other......

The comparison between marriage and recruitment has been made over and over. For two things that have no intrinsic link, they offer a multitude of similarities, and not just because 1 in 3 ends in failure. It is probably not surprising then that one of my colleagues moonlights as a marriage celebrant by the weekend. A good chunk of our Monday morning team meeting is usually dedicated to her…

Job Hunt 101 for College Grads

So, you have already completed your graduation or post graduation and now looking for a job. What do you think that the corporate world is looking in you? Are you actually ready to market yourself and face pressure of expectations? Having interviewed several hundred’ of interviewees in the last couple of months, I believe that the youngsters are ill-prepared. They miss the killer-instinct and spark that is required by the corporate world and their attitude is not just appropriate. Who is to…

Beware the Victim Virus

The only true victims are those who are dead and buried and have no recourse to change their circumstances. Like her or despise her, Casey Anthony, recently released from jail, has this opportunity in her life. She can play the role of victim, bemoaning the past few years, or accept the current state of affairs and move on from here. Much of this will hinge on who she surrounds herself with, people who talk and act like victims or those who live their lives focused on hope and… Continue

Discrimination in recruitment. Not only good – essential!

Last week I blogged on the importance of “job order triage”. Great recruiters ruthlessly prioritise the briefs they work on, and put most effort into the highly fillable few.

Well, what about the candidates to invest time in?

Some recruiters take the view that as there is a talent shortage, every candidate…
