RecruitCONSULT! Elevate Recruiting to True Consulting

In the corporate Talent Acquisition profession, the day-to-day process of what recruiters do is fairly simple:
  1. We work with the business to develop a plan to recruit talent (often includes developing the position profile,  the recruiting strategy, and other activities)
  2. We go out and “find” prospects and candidates using “sourcing” techniques.
  3. We assess…

Clients and Agencies: Has the 'Special Relationship' changed?

Clients and Agencies: Has the ‘Special Relationship’ Changed?

The ‘Special Relationship’ is a phrase used to describe the exceptionally close relations between the UK and the USA, following its use in a 1946 speech by Winston Churchill. Although there has been much talk of recent strains to this relationship, the level of cooperation between the countries remains ‘unparalleled’ among major powers.

In Executive Search, which is traditionally the recruitment… Continue

AMBULANCE AT 3:00AM...JUST NOW...ACROSS THE STREET...A FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS MOMENT...

It’s 3:00am and I’m churning away on business, tweets, discussions, blogs and paperwork …suddenly, silently, a brightly lit and light flashing ambulance rolls up just outside across the way…

It immediately reminded me of poet John Donne’s famous last lines from his poem, “For whom the bell tolls”

Therefore, send not to know

For whom the bell…

Silicon Valley, Center of Innovation, Center of Staffing Prowess, Center of Economic Recovery Hope

A few days ago I visited Belgatos Park in Los Gatos. Los Gatos literally means the cats. It is in this park where Mountain Lions, Deer, Bobcats, Boar, Hawks, Coyotes and a whole host of wildlife call home near the perennial Silicon Valley. It is interesting to return to nature, and view from a distance the downtown of the valley that has been at the forefront of so much change.

In the search for sound investments, we at PepsiCo try to look at much more than what you'd normally expect to find on a resume or spelled out in cover letters. Skills, experience and references…

Repurposing Your Recruiters During Downsizing

Today, Dan Kilgore on my team wrote a great post that I thought would be great to share with everyone:

Okay, we’re now a few years into “The Great Recession”, and despite the predictions of many of the political and economic pundits, a healthy rebound that includes genuine and sustained job growth is still “just around the corner”.  While some industries are… Continue

Client Acquisition & Delivery Capability

A start up recruitment firm has sizable number of clients and a decent recruitment team in place. It has managed the show well so far but wants to scale up the business to next level now. But being a start up it has limited resources.

Now as a strategic move the company wants to decide between either going after new clients or hiring more recruiters to ensure that it does not miss out on commitments and delivery excellence.

One worry is if it hires more…

Men, Women, Children, the Elderly, and Animals

As we fight the uphill battle against Recruitment’s dire reputation by striving to provide the best service we can and be as ethical and incisive as possible, we do occasionally come across an instruction from the client side that never fails to shock me. I’m sure it’s something that many Recruiters will recognise, a little throwaway comment that is couched in a joke and a twinkling smile but is actually as concrete an instruction as any of the immovables on the brief.

It…

US Job Market turns South loses 2.0% in June 2011

Online advertised demand for labor in the US fell 2.0% in June, the first decline since December. After a good start at the beginning of this year the job market is slowing now leaving little hope for more activity during the summer. This development is worse than a year ago when the job market leveled of during the same time. The difference is that growth rates last year, while small, remained positive.

Talent Acquisition, Talent Management – What Do You Do?

For as long as I have been in this business, the business of sourcing, screening and selecting great talent for client companies, I have felt that more could be done. I felt that those of us who do this type of work were only being allowed to do just so much in bringing great talent to an organization, and that once the offer to a candidate had been made and accepted, our role ended. This is especially true for 3rd party recruiters, but is also true for those of us who provide a…

Superlatives.....absolutely my very worst pet hate ever.

Exceptional, outstanding, superb, unique.....and other similar superlatives are words that I come across every day when reading job adverts.

Reading these types of adverts is a bit like receiving that email from Nigeria advising you that someone wants to send you a million dollars in return for your bank details. When I see an advert that describes the job with a long list of superlatives it makes me think that the opportunity is not nearly as good as the recruiter is… Continue
